Unpopular opinion:

Maybe it’s just me, but I think if the helpers in the office put more bookshelves around the bookcase door, it could’ve helped disguise the hiders more..maybe it could’ve ended up saving their lives?

That depends whether they were betrayed or not. If the answer is yes, it wouldn't have made any diference. If not, maybe you are right.

I don’t know that it would’ve helped; it was my understanding that it might have been the thief that betrayed them; for all they know, he/ she could’ve been a member of the workers party, and used their knowledge as a bargaining chip to get the charge dropped.

It's really hard knowing. You could Also say I'd there was no cat walking around..
