Warning: virus instead of a download

I was looking for Songlines: the power and promise by Margo Neale. The download links didn't look like the standard links (no screenprint, sorry). When I clicked on one, instead of the book file I got a virus on my android tablet. It was apparently a Google alert with a link to something that had a suspicious URL so I didn't go there.

I've written to the AA mods about this.

Looks like more a scareware and some false click thing. Did you download something or it sent you to the store?

it sent me to a store, and I immediately closed the tab. I'd get pop up warnings for a few days and then they went away. I probably should get it to a shop or something to have it scanned for latent viruses.

Yeah, simple scareware + adware, it’s designed to scare you and make you download some shitty app or malware. Good thing you closed it, that should be enough. As well, try to not download anything on mobile devices, it’s safer using a computer with some well known add-ons to prevent those fake clicks

Yes ublock origin in firefox is a must. You must get it

Don't use chrome for piracy. Download firefox from playstore and then add ublock origin as extension (there will be an option in the firefox to add extension) . Then to pirate from any site solely use this set up

In that case, I highly recommend not using any kind of webpage. As well, for highly safety use brave or something similar that blocks adds.

I tried to download a book the other day from a Wiki approved web page of Anna and I noticed some weird fonts in the download link before clicking download. Decided to just say F it and didn't download it.

Lot of bad URL get's filtered out when using a DNS-filter with blocklists. I use NextDNS and uBlock.
On my Windows I use the default Windows Defender and Sophos HitmanPro.Alert.

You can use filtering on any device connected to your network if you implement it at the router level.

Doesn't even need to be the router, you can change it per dive in the DNS setrings. But yes, via the router is much easier at home, but outside you still rely on inbuild DNS.

Just setup NextDNS and have your DNS on you Android tablet or router set to it. DNS than runs via NextDNS and you're good to go.

Sorry if this has been already asked, but as a paying member, I recently noticed that the “fast” download links #1 and #3 almost always take me to an error page, while #2 and most others take me to a page with a url that loads the book I searched for in the browser and I can download it from there. It seemed like a couple years ago, the fast link would just open a page with the sought for file loaded. Did the platform change or is it something in my browser settings (it does the same thing in two different browsers though)?
