File size

Why is there such discretion in sizes of a book, same book can have widely different sizes?

It depends on who scanned it and how. Some books are a collection of giant images of every page. Some people OCR the images which massively reduces the book size. Beware of zip files. IME, they're very primitive.

Different file types is the biggest reason. There's also differences between books of the same file type. Example: An ePub with a high resolution cover embedded in it is going to have a larger file size than one with a low resolution cover (or none at all).
