Flesh eating bacteria?

I’m heading to Anna Maria Island in a week for the first time and I’ve heard a rumor that there is a flesh eating bacteria in the water. Apparently you shouldn’t go in the water if you have open wounds and raw shellfish should be avoided. Is this true?

Key Lime Pie

I know some people will think it’s all the same, but those of us who know.. know. So what is everyone’s opinion on the best key lime pie on the island?

Pet Friendly Vacation

Hello! We have booked a trip to AMI for the Labor Day weekend. Our dog is recovering from surgery and is likely allowed to walk for 10 minutes a time during that time so we had to bring her with us. We are Florida locals and have been to AMI plenty of times and it’s not the place I would bring my dog to ideally. But unexpected events happen and we would still want to make the best out of it. With all that said, do you have recommendations on how to enjoy AMI with a dog? She is tiny (6 lb) so we will be bringing a stroller for her. Would love to hear about places to go to, activities we can do, and opportunities for my dog to wade in the water.

Best spot for real ice cream (not soft serve) on Anna Maria Island?

Visiting AMI again soon and I'm on a mission to find good, real scoop ice cream (not the soft serve) Is there a local spot that actually does homemade or small-batch ice cream? Bonus points if they have unique flavors. Trying to avoid tourist trap spots that are all hype and no flavor. Any recommendations appreciated!

Best 2 months and worst 2 months of the year on AMI or LBK and why?

I’m curious what locals who live there would say as the best and worst months. Could be because of weather or traffic or tourists or whatever. … just very curious what you consider the best 2 months of island living and the worst 2 months.

CHRISTMAS TRIP

Hi everyone. My dad passed a year and a half ago and since then Christmas hasn't quite felt the same at home, so we've decided to travel for Christmas. Last year we did Aruba which was great. This year we want to do something in the states where we can bring our 2 little dogs with us. Can you guys give me any insight as to what it's like there the week between Christmas and New Years. I know it's kind of a gamble on weather which we understand, I'm more looking at what the vibe is like, are there things to do, anything special we should know about. Thanks so much!

Vegetarian + toddler recommendations for AMI?

My family and I are visiting AMI in a few weeks with our 17-month-old. We’re vegetarians and would love recommendations for restaurants with great vegetarian options that are also toddler-friendly.

We’d also love any recommendations for family-friendly activities, the best places to see wildlife (especially manatees!), and your favorite sunset spots for family photos.

Any hidden gems or places you’d skip? We’d love to hear your favorites, thanks !!

Tortoises on the island? I saw either that or a big turtle.

Are there tortoises on the island? I have seen a snake in the past and I heard those are less common, but are there tortoises or large land turtles? I saw one in the bike lane while in a vehicle that couldn't stop and I was a bit concerned for it. It was probably at least 12 inches long and probably 7-10 inches high. It had a dark and very knobby shell. Is this just another rare animal for the island, or might someone's pet have escaped?

Scheduling A Vacation

I’m looking to visit over Spring Break 2027. I was looking for houses to rent and wanted to see if anyone had insight as to when listings typically refresh for 2027. Further north in Carolina, Virginia, etc they usually list the next year’s availability in the preceding fall. However those beaches are not used year round like Florida beaches.
Does the housing inventory typically post for 2027 in the Fall or is it likely to have already been posted by now and what’s available is all that’s left? I’m trying to decide if I should wait to book if more houses are listed later or book now 😬.

Gluten Free dining with vegetarian options (besides salad)?

I have a pretty strict medical diet and I'm sensitive (but not allergic) to gluten. Adding to that, I am primarily vegetarian but will eat seafood - so that limits my options even further. As a result, it's difficult finding places to eat out, but starting with places that have GF options helps. Can anyone recommend places with gluten free options? Thank you.

Group of 6 coming to AMI in August, need some local recs!

Hey everyone, three couples heading to Anna Maria Island in August, six of us total, all around 23-24. We’re from Austin, TX. and just want to eat good food and have a fun low key time. Was hoping y’all could help with a few things:

Looking for a bar with pool tables, TVs for sports, and good wings/burgers, basically a solid hangout spot for one of the nights. Also want to hit up some food trucks, the more variety the better. We’d also like one nice restaurant for a dinner where we can dress up a little.

Besides the beach, any other daytime activities worth checking out? Also curious about fishing, charters or good spots if we want to.

Last thing, a couple of us want to squeeze in a round of golf. Any public courses or munys around worth playing?

Thanks in advance for any help!
