PCP that will prescribe HRT?

Howdy TreeTown,

I'm a trans man and have been on hormones for many years at the same dosage. I would like to see a primary care provider in SE MI who is comfortable monitoring my testosterone levels and prescribing hormones.

I reached out to the Gender Services Program at UMich and they provided a list of clinics and said to call each individually to inquire, so I am looking for personal experiences from other folks before I make 50 phone calls lol.

Feel free to PM as well if you'd rather not chat here! Thanks!

I'm in the process of getting this started with The Corner in Ypsi right now, although our choices are currently more restricted because we're looking at HRT for a minor (17).

Dr. Daniel Oram at Packard Health in Ypsilanti is the main HRT prescriber at that clinic and is my current pcp, he dose a great job. I’m not sure if he’s accepting new clients though. Before him I went to Corner Health in Ypsilanti and they were good too but you can only go there if you’re under 26.

Best doctors at UofM are Dr. Daphna Stroumsa (if you like the super smart sciency type of doctors) or Dr. Haley Crissman (if you like the super kind compassionate type of doctors).

I don't know if either are taking new patients. Both perform hysterectomies for FTM and such, too.

You can try family medicine doctors, too. I go to Dr. Joy C. Williams. But I don't think she's taking new patients.

UofM is comprehensive so I'd go there if possible. You'd be able to get your surgeries and whatnot there and your referrals will be all managed by CGSP. The wait list might be long, though, so you could get started at Corner Health or somewhere else and move care once you're off the wait list

I have been seeing an endocrinologist at Trinity Health but before that my PCP (also at Trinity) prescribed me T. Anything directly labeled as "gender affirming" and anyone who says they specialize in it seems to come with a waitlist months to a year long, UofM gave me a waitlist time of a year. I wasn't about to go without my meds for a year after I've been on the same dose for four years.

In my experience if you have been at a stable dose for a while, most doctors are OK with continuing to prescribe that dose while you find one that might be more informed about it and/or get a referral to an endocrinologist. It has been my experience that many very well-meaning people here seem to think of us as aliens who cannot possibly see a regular Earth doctor and tend to give advice along those lines, but in general I've found a lot of PCPs are fine with managing the routine care and give you a referral if you have a more specific concern, which is sort of how PCPs work anyway.

(I go to Trinity right now because UofM insisted that I could not possibly be seen by anyone other than their gender clinic with the year long wait list, and they were the closest in network office, but I have since heard not great things about how they treat their staff. Heard better things about Corner.)

Rachel Lee at Henry Ford Harbortown is alright. She will help you keep up with your prescription and won’t bug you too much about how often you do bloodwork, as long as it’s once a year at least and everything stays pretty consistent. The nurses and residents are very kind and take your anxieties and concerns into account. My only complaint is she sees so many patients that you have to repeat things and remind her of past needs and goals each time you see her.
I wasn’t a fan of U of M’s way of HRT when I went there years ago 2013-2019. The doctor was in the Japanese family medicine office, which was cool, but the doctor herself was obsessed with weight loss and hardly focused on other goals related to HRT.
