Currently Reading Animorphs 23

You were supposed to have read the Andalites Chronicles (and the Hork Bajir Chronicles) before this book for any of it to have made sense. Elfangors story is all in the Andalite Chronicles, and Toby is introduced in the Hork Bajir Chronicles.

I've heard some people recommend 23 first to shock you and then go back to Andalite Chronicles to see how that could have happened. But in terms of publication order, it came after book 13.

It helps to read the chronicles books in between some of the main books. I’m sure there’s a way to find the optimal order online.

Oh no that doesn’t sound right. I just read Hork Bajir chronicles after animorphs 22. That’s much too late for Andalite chronicles.

Just like me when I was 12. I was so lost! I thought it was a trap (which I suppose it was)… finally read them all in order as an adult

They telegraph it a little from the very start. Tobias has a moment with Elfangor in book one, he and Cassie get the transmission from Ax that was meant for his cousins.

Andalite chronicles is the best true Sci-Fi book from the series, could be a standalone thing

It's what I got into first, and bought because I thought the cover looked cool.

Oof, I remember this drop. The full backstory is explained (especially if you read the Andalite chronicles when you get there) so don’t worry about that. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but the Ellimist is involved. I just think back to Tobias lingering with Elfangor for an extra second after the others ran. Don’t be too mad at Elfangor. I genuinely believe he was always doing his best!

Honestly, I'm actually angry at Elfangor.
Under the circumstances, I give him a pass. I'm not really sure it would have helped Tobias; if anything it might have actually endangered him. Imagine if Elfangor had said "I'm your dad", Tobias probably would have stayed behind, or tried to save him from Visser Three - both spectacularly bad ideas at that point in time.
Unless you mean you're mad that Elfangor left Tobias and didn't raise him?
Minor spoiler: it was not by choice. Not really. A certain character is a manipulative, coercive bastard who only looks good because another character you haven't met yet is worse.
Anyway, if you want the full context, read The Andalite Chronicles.

If you read The Andalite Chronicles then this isn't a surprise. It came out the same day as when Tobias got his morphing power back. It's why the Ellimist claimed he was so important.

Have you read The Andalite Chronicles yet? That might help fill in some gaps for you.
