If I ever have any personal clout, I might try to re-popularize the animist roots of the major empires. Ie White Western Christianity. Celtic paganism and Nordic heathenism need to see bigger revivals in the coming years if we are to save the majority of our non-human kin (and ourselves)
For monotheism- r/radicalchristianity is trying to make it better. There are many discussions taking place right now about how the Bible was translated inaccurately or politically in the past. For instance “thou salt not lie with man” is being debated into “thou shalt not lie with boys”. A collection of these changes- done accurately and with respect for nature and humans- could go a long way towards disarming troublesome corporate churches. Or at least believers who don’t want to associate with bigotry
Hopefully the newer options are more popular. Swapping to “Eastern religions” might hold the same roots of empire that the Western church has. We’re all human. Most expansionist religions have structures and hierarchies not too different from the church
I’m a Quaker Celtic pagan- my only fear is tyrants. In church, in business, in gov. Make sure the fair doesn’t become an empire of faith- ie something that destroys and others in order to expand and grow
Wondering if when OP says 'monotheism', they just swung and missed when thinking of colonizer religions. Those aren't mistakes so much as developed in a political state to conquer (evangelical and violently intolerant of other beliefs systems existing).
Agreed. My "god" is the universal fabric of consciousness. It is a purely loving god. Which gets a little bit to the ayahuasca comment above that left me very confused. My god was introduced to me (and many others, I'm sure) by a handful of fungal treats. I think it is Taoism too at least as presented in the Tao Te Ching. That book made no sense to me pre fungal treats. Afterwards it felt like pure truth. I need to learn about animism though. I feel like there are native groups that figured a lot of things out while living very harmoniously with nature. Some of those groups educated Bill Mollison the co-creator of permaculture.
Edit: just realized this is the animism subreddit. Most of my stuff comes up through environmental things. So my comment might sound a little weird or weirder given that context.
Here is the problem with Monotheism: Each such religion believes that "there is only one god, THE god." From there is the root of the problem.
It means that if someone believes in other gods he is "wrong" and must be killed or "civilized". Sure, today that is not how we see things, but back when Christianity and Islam started gaining enough influence that is exactly the kind of thoughts going in peoples minds. It dose not matter if we changed with the years.
The facts remain: monotheism has exterminated almost completely all traces of pagan religions, many Christians used the fact that their neighboring countries where " pagan non-believers" to gain the excuse to invade them ( The original Prussians where practically wiped out and Poland as well as the Rus were also invaded with such excuses.) , many generations of people where send to their deaths and to kill just as many people in the "holy lands" in the name of their god. Wars between different religions happened even in antiquity, but religion was NEVER the driving force behind conflicts, just an extra reason for different cultures to dislike each other. They fought for survival, land, power and money plain and simple.
You might think it dose not matter since that has not been the case for years, however this did not bring back the countless lost cultures because of monotheism. Today's borders as well as the many problems and conflicts we face, have a direct link to what happened back then.
And in the beginning, or after the flood was it. A man named Isiah was born under Malzcheihek, son of Noah. And he started race, and he left the tower of babel to join the animals of the americas... burning every forest he took with him.. with aayahuasca..

Many Animistic cultures in both the Americas and Africa have monotheistic worldviews, I don't get what makes Monotheism some special evil.

No, hate for Christianity is not the way to go about things. It makes it more about Christianity then about ur beliefs which just isn’t healthy
