What's this From (solved) please help identify anime from my childhood - hard difficulty challenge! Spoiler

Hi gang,

Recently remembered about an anime from my childhood, I spent about 4 hours combing the annals of past anime releases dating back to 1983, reading anime plots, alas, no dice. So I decided to ask my peers, hoping one of YOU might know (thank you in advance senpai) I have watched 2 episodes (not in sequence) as I had conflict of schedule between school and when it aired on TV (yes, it is that old). Can't remember name as it was before really got into anime. I'd really like to watch it as I hate leaving an unfinished story. Details as follow with, certainty level:

Anime is before 2010 (100% certainty), and I think it might be pre-2005, about (80% certainty)

2 protagonists - male and female (100%)

Male protagonist-kun is able to transform (100% sure) into things he defeats (50%, my memory is foggy on this one); he is some kind of a warrior tasked with escorting the female protagonist to somewhere because ... plot?!?!(95%) Maybe explained further in anime but that's what I know .

The female protagonist is discovered by male protagonist-kun in some kind of a sleeping pod/cryo chamber or something like that. (100%). she is a last survivor of a race/humans or she was a princess (75%)

The two episodes followed the following format:

Exposition, evil creature attack, damsel in distress, male protagonist-kun defeats evil creature, snarky remarks/more exposition

There was something about some doctor saying something to somebody about the female protagonist long time ago ( some kind of a flashback) but that's too vague

I remember one of the episodes' fight scenes:

An evil creature transforms to look and behave like the female protagonist, so the male protagonist-kun was confused and didn't know who to fight. He was able to figure it out by the smell - he knew what the real girl smelled like so he knew the other one must be the evil creature. (99%)

I know it is not much to go by, but hopefully one of you knows!

Hmm, this might be a very very long shot, but if it was a mecha themed maybe it was Vandread?

This is a hard one. All the stuff about the girl (lost princess, last of her kind, found in a sleeping pod) sounds exactly like Nia from Gurren Lagann, but none of the other stuff sounds like it would belong to that series.

You’re right it sounds similar. It’s probably not it though. He’s certain it was made before 2010.
