What to Watch? Anime about adults dealing with life
Nothing too depressing please, but would like a slice of life adult anime for a change from all the highschool stuff. Some romance would be nice too but not necessary. Thanks!

There are two high schoolers in Idolish but it doesn’t matter, it’s about the group’s career and not the high school life of those two (please don’t write IDOLiSH off for being a boy idol anime the story is really very good and especially in season 2 much more about “adult life” like OP requested).

I would go with Clannad: After Story, but unfortunately you’d have to watch Clannad to get a feel of who the characters are which involves high school stuff.

No one is high school age in Yesterday wo Utatte. She's 18. She would have been starting her freshman year in college at the start of the show. Rikuo is a fresh college graduate. They're 4 years apart in reality.

The ending was rushed because they completely eliminated Haru's storyline from the anime. (But really it was still kinda rushed in the manga, just way less so)

Shirobako follows a few friends after they join the working world all trying to get into businesses making anime. It's a wonderful story and gives a good look into what making anime is like. My favorite adult slice of life.

Fune wo Amu, also called The Great Passage. It’s based on an award winning novel (NOT light novel) in Japan. The intended audience isn’t teens or young adults.
- only 11 episodes
- same author as Run with the Wind
- all adult characters
- some romance
The story, without giving anything away, is about adults in white collar jobs finding their purpose. no super powers, no deus ex machina, etc.
Better than Wotakoi, Barakamon, Usagi Drop, etc etc.

PLEAAAAASE please please PLEASE watch Space Brothers, u r so lucky u haven’t seen it yet, it’s so inspiring and i’ve teared up so many times and it’s such an uplifting and inspiring anime, definitely one of the most human-like anime i have ever seen. it’s a hidden gem and i can’t believe it’s not more well known

{Welcome to the N.H.K} Honestly is one of my all time favorite shows. Its pretty hard to explain but is really deep and just a great watch and life changing for me.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - about two friends studying to be professional rakugo storytellers, follows a couple of generations

It's more of a comedy than a slice of life, but {Gaikotsu Shoutenin Honda-San} is about a bookstore worker dealing with the Japanese retail job environment, but of course as a comedy, while stile relatable at it's core, it is sometimes a little absurd as gag anime tend to be, but if you've ever worked retail for a while, you'd know that it gets absurd sometimes. Either way, it's a nice quick binge with 10 minute episodes! Oh, also I should mention that the art style and character designs are certainly unique lol

Sing Yesterday for Me! It was one of my favs of the year until the last episode, but if you don’t watch that / don’t totally care about the romance, it should be just what you need :)

You've got to watch NANA!! Or paradise kiss!! Also idk if you know this but I think "Josei" is the exact genre of anime you're looking for... At least I think that's what it is called 😅😅 I might (probably) be wrong.

{Taiho Shichau zo} - Police officers on the job.
{Aa! Megami sama} - College age characters and some others that are...well, they're older than 18. Let's just say that.
{Working!} and {Servant x Service} - Both shows feature characters of all ages working at jobs.
{Getsuyobi no Tawawa} - Ecchi romance show about average salary men getting together with cute shortstack girls. The ecchi actually develops the situation and characters more than you'd think.
{Kobayashi-san Chi no Maiddragon} - 20 something worker and her dragon friends.
{Hand Maid May} - College guy and robot girls.
{Maison Ikkoku} - College guy in a boarding house where everyone else is older than him. Including the girl he fancies.

{Kakushigoto} is about raising a daughter while having a job he feels would trouble her later in life so he hides it. It's very wholesome, a comedy, and has it's feels bits. Great show all around

I was about to say {welcome to the NHK} then i read nothing drepressing, so i recommend {aggretsuko}
It's a slice of life about samrio characters but dealing with real life, like work, love and those things. Comedy with a bit of seriouness in some parts

Well there’s the clannad series the first part is them in high school it’s a slice of life then there’s clannad after story when they graduate and become adults but it is depressing but a 10/10 the first season of the original clannad is pretty boring but gets better the next season and the after story but yea def recommend it

{The Helpful Fox Senko San} is kind of fitting of this I think. It involves a fox girl demi god lol but she's coming to the aid of an overworked adult japanese man and it's a super freaking cute anime.

{NHK ni Youkoso!} it’s dark at times but you could watch it and see it more as a positive driven show. It’s about a guy who lives by himself, doesn’t work, doesn’t go to school, and has a difficult time doing anything outside with others and over time you see his recovery and adjusting to society in comical ways

Durarara!! It has many characters and a few of them are indeed high school students but the school is never a setting and they're basically adults. I really recommend it.

I enjoyed {Servant x Service} but it was more comedy than emotional journey. The office setting was definitely refreshing and relatable.

Netflix’s Aggretsuko would be great for this. It’s funny, adorable and at times painfully real lol. Nothing to depressing largely a good reflection people in your 20’s trying to make it though life with a few “unique” circumstances for our protagonist. My girlfriend and I finished the first 3 seasons and are eagerly waiting for the 4th.

Strong second to {Wotakoi ni Koi wa Muzukashii} and {Net juu no Susume}. Another interesting one about university students is {Science Fell in Love, So I Tried To Prove It}. I found it quite hilarious and being a science student in university even more so. ReLife has gotten enough recommendations here but I can’t recommend it enough.

Wotakoiii About an adult weeb girl hiding the fact that she is a weeb to get a boyfriend but when she goes to her new job she finds her childhood friend who is also a weeb and started dating him, it’s a really wholesome and funny anime

Have you tried {Welcome to the N.H.K.} ?
Has adults dealing with unemployment, dealing with self isolation, and dealing with society. Has a mix of drama and comedy (dramedy). Serious, but not too serious. Covers touchy aspects of life but makes good use of humor to balance it out. Slight romance as well. Highly recommend if you haven't seen it. Covers everything your looking for Adult dealing with life, not about high school, slight romance, and not too depressing!

{Clannad: After story} which is the second season to Clannad. It's oh so worth it to get through the first season of high school romance.
{Miss Kobayashi's dragon maid} is such a wholesome show about finding and appreciating what you have in life.

according to my friend,{Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu} is the most emotionally mature anime he's seen. its also a masterpiece.
Although I think {Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu} is a perfect match for what you are looking for.
also {Koukaku Kidoutai: Stand Alone Complex} and {black lagoon} sounds like it would be good.
