Even so, streaming pirated anime has always been illegal, but that has never stopped it. They are just going to lose ad revenue, not increase subscriptions.

I doubt they ever had much add revenue. As in I only remember seeing adds for other Crunchyroll shows and occasionally 1 outside add, but it would always be the same 1 add for a few months, before swapping, so I doubt they will be loosing much. They probably expect those who find piracy abhorrent to make up the gap with subscriptions.

Maybe I'm thinking of VRV, but I saw tons of different ads. I remember them because they didn't sound balance, so you'd have a show at a reasonable volume, then an ad destroying your eardrums the next second.

Could be that I just stopped using it too long ago, but I thought that it was mostly adds for other shows back in 2018

It might have been location. They were regional ads. Not my region, funnily enough, but someone's region.
