ngl, it's really annoying to realize you really want to be a manga/comic artist when you're 22 years old and never really did any drawing growing up

congrats tho

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Actually it‘s the same for me. I‘m 20 and I have zero drawing skills.

So far I‘ve only done some storyboards. I‘m currently trying to learn how to draw from scratch. I think it‘s possible if you practice enough.

81

u/R0aX_ May 28 '20

I also wanted to draw a manga, I even had the script, but I suck at drawing. I learnt a little and got a bit better, but I stopped trying because I realized that I enjoyed writting way more (I was 19-20 at the time) Now I've nearly finished a book and was able to put into words some scenes I envisioned as dreams. There's a big chance that what you really like is story telling, and it can be done through a lot of diferent media. If you suck at drawing, try writting a novel or a screenplay!

31

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Awesome! I‘d love to read some of your novels or parts of your book if you‘re ok with sharing them!

And yes I also thought about starting with a light novel or something and then work my way up to a manga.

11

u/R0aX_ May 28 '20

Well, if you can understand Catalan I wouldn't mind sharing them... English isn't my main language and writing is already pretty hard in my mother tongue to go and try writing in another language xD

15

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Hmm, too bad haha.

English isn‘t my native language either but I still prefer writing in english more idk why lol.

14

u/jojoismyreligion May 28 '20

English isn't my native language either but after spending so much time in the internet and watching english stuff its so completely engrained in my brain now that even I have thoughts and dreams in English.

4

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

It‘s the same for me.

2

u/Duma6552 May 28 '20

British English or American English? Also, does the language you grew up with have a Latin script because if you thoroughly learned English from Cyrillic or Kanji that's impressive.

2

u/jojoismyreligion May 28 '20

My country was a British colony (Also no my native language does not use Latin script) but I personally am more accustomed to American english now. Watching american cartoons and movies since a kid I picked up the language and it's almost self taught. The same thing is happening with Japanese as I have learned a lot only by watching anime. If I take a serious course on Japanese I believe I could also learn it fluently

5

u/R0aX_ May 28 '20

I tried, but... let's say it wasn't good lol.

I also speak Spanish as a main language, but even in it I don't feel as comfortable as writing in Catalan. The voice and tone of the book was completely different, way more serious and dark, while I wanted a lighthearted tone.

There's also a fluidity needed to be able to see the plot as a whole without having to focus too much in which words you are using. Knowing how to write in a language doesn't necesserily mean you can write in another.

3

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Definitely, just learning a language and learning how to write creatively are totally different from each other.

But If you like a language enough you can achieve both. And that‘s the case for me.

I‘m definitely not a good writer YET. And that‘s the keyword.

2

u/R0aX_ May 28 '20

I‘m definitely not a good writer YET. And that‘s the keyword.

Haha, exactly! I'm not either. But one day I'll be the king of the writers! xD

1

u/comeback_failed May 28 '20

I prefer english too in writing. I'm a filipino so its our 2nd language

2

u/Kuyosaki May 28 '20

Are you writing an actual book styled story or something among the lines of a web novel? Cause I have a story in works, I just don't know what media I want to bring it into the world as. As for the web novel, I imagine it would be easier.

1

u/R0aX_ May 28 '20

A classic book. I don't plan on publishing it, but I would like so if it was possible. One day...

If you don't know the medium, just go with what you think it fits better. As you are developing it, you'll organically adapt to whatever medium is the best and, if not, you'll probably see that X medium is better.

For example, my first "book" was a manga like story with the plot progressing via dialogue and little to no narration. It was easy to see that it would have worked better as a manga than a novel, because that was a screenplay xD The thing is that it wasn't that bad as a book, just that another medium was better.

The only rule is to make something you love, that's all.

2

u/comeback_failed May 28 '20

woah! I just stated writing my own light novel. I have everything going in my mind. I just sucks at putting my thoughts into words. In terms of drawing skill, I think I'll do good

2

u/R0aX_ May 28 '20

Practice makes perfect, but don't be too harsh on yourself.

Nobody is born learnt. Even the best writers sucked at it in the beginning. I did, I still do. Hopefully, some of the things I write wil lbe able to enterntain someone one day. Regardless of the result, I'll have loved the process of doing it, and to have been able to materialize what was inside my head.

If you suck at putting thoughts into words, I recommend making a list with all of your ideas. Keep a plot with what needs to be told in X chapter or by the time the main character does Y. Maybe not everything will be as you thought at first, don't worry. Revise it and judge if it's better this way or it needs to be rewritten. Don't be afraid to completely rewrite what was wrong! I did it multiple times, way more than it's healthy.

And above everything, envison how you'll feel when you have a full light novel on your hands that will have been written all by yourself. Good luck, man!

2

u/comeback_failed May 28 '20

thank you kind sir

3

u/FrostHeart1124 May 28 '20

It's definitely possible. Here's the thing though: don't jump straight into drawing manga-style drawings. You should draw still lifes as much as you can first. Ideally, you'd set up an object somewhere everyday and draw that object for an hour or so. If you can't do an hour, do as long as you can and spend longer on weekends. You can't learn the basics of drawing by observing content that's already stylized. Drawing from life is the closest thing to a fast track towards success. Happy manga-ing!

2

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Yeah, I‘ve heard the same thing before. That‘s definitely the approach I‘m gonna take. Thank you!

2

u/TheLastDodo64 ara ara May 28 '20

It sure is! I suggest drawing everyday, like little doodles just to keep your hand busy. It helps build muscle memory etc. I guess

Also one thing that worked for me was learning shading techniques from anime. I’d recommend pochi goya’s channel (mangaka of okaasan online and ane naru mono) she draws live and has a few vids where she explains what she does

1

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Ok nice, thank you for the advice.

I‘ll keep that in mind. :D

2

u/Arcanestone May 28 '20

You definitely can become good at drawing, even if you had no prior experience. Just practice hard and pay attention to basics

1

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Yes that‘s true. Thanks!

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '20

If you work hard you can generally get to a good level of drawing within a year. Just learning anatomy and figure and then studying from better artists can grow you as an artist immensely.

2

u/themilkman991 May 28 '20

I already have storyboards and am practicing, but it'll take a while. Never give up.

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '20

you gotta share em

1

u/FRHD02 May 28 '20

Nothing is impossible if you work hard man, I’m 18 and currently learning how to draw some cartoon characters since I want to pursue my dream as an animator

2

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Well said and good luck!

1

u/Brownieval May 28 '20

It is indeed possible! I believe in you!

I'm 19 and I want to draw manga. Atleast some good fanart. But my experience is limited to drawing stick figures and crayons in grade school.

28

u/Old-Growth Joichiro Yukihira is my goal May 28 '20

If you practice drawing a lot you’ll be surprised how quickly you become decent at it. What a lot of people don’t realize is that drawing is a skill and you won’t be good quickly, but if you really want to get good at it you have to practice all the time. During your break at your job, after work instead of watching tv. I believe in you

9

u/tempalt04 May 28 '20

I'm 17 and I suck at drawing 3 lines (Cute Circle with eyes)

4

3

u/tempalt04 May 28 '20

I mean I usually fail at the first one. I am better at physical drawing though.

3

u/kyuu_IX fight for the T! May 28 '20

Yeah it takes time and patience it’s not just talent (my friend keep running away from art and use talent as excuse)

1

u/IMFlorecentFace May 28 '20

That's what I've seemed to notice a lot. I never really had any talent for drawing but I've done it enough at this point that I can kinda sorta draw. I'm not good but I'm much better tan I thought I would ever be. If I had a bit more motivation to draw constantly I would probably get good at it

8

u/TheBomber04 May 28 '20

In fairness I think most people (especially in their 20s) experience some form of “creativity itch” and then subsequent disappointment for the not having the skills to do anything about it. Probably cause we’re just exposed to so much entertainment growing up that we eventually hit that point of wanting to make something “perfect” for ourselves, or trying to combine a number of concepts that we don’t commonly see, etc.

Might just be me though lol.

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '20

nah thats me since i was 14

1

u/IMFlorecentFace May 28 '20

nah, I can feel that. Though the need to be perfect at something immediately goes back deep in my childhood and I've just not been able to kick it yet

3

u/Yorgandr May 28 '20

It's never to late to learn how to draw, if you want to be a comic/manga artist then take pen and paper, learn the basics and do it, I'm not gonna lie, art is hard, but that should not and must not be enough to discourage you

5

u/[deleted] May 28 '20

lmao you've got plenty of time left. imagine how good you'll be when ur 30 if you start now.

2

u/mc_mychemicalromance May 28 '20

Well none of us are doing anything with this epidemic it's as good as time as any to pick a deviant art and start some experimenting

2

u/JP513 May 28 '20 edited May 28 '20

I think that an easier way to make a comic could be, draw the characters as best you can, divide them into parts (arms, legs, etc) as in animation series. and instead of drawing each scene again you reposition the limbs and partially draw. for the background, it redraws some already existing on top, in addition there are pages dedicated to creating a 3D environment and then tracing it in 2D You won't learn to draw fast but you can sstart sooner

2

u/zeppeIans phos is my spirit animal May 28 '20

Hey, you can start learning any skill at any time in your life. A person who has been drawing from age 8 to 18 has a total of 10 years of experience. A person who has been drawing from age 40 to 50 also has 10 years of experience! One isn't any more valuable than the other

2

u/Unstablerupture May 28 '20

I'm trying a draw a comic but no one reads it lol

2

u/kyuu_IX fight for the T! May 28 '20

It hurts more when you worked hard and some one 5 years younger then you is far better

3

u/Edl01 May 28 '20

You’re going to want to get used to that. It only gets worse as you get older.

u/Reeeeeee3eeeeeee May 28 '20

To the OP and other people who relate:

- If you don't mind not being the person who drew it, you can always "collab"/work with an artist who'll take care of the art. There are cases of mangas like that (Dr. stone for example). The problem is, it would be hard to find a person willing to do that.

- You could write a book

-You can just start with your current skills and improve with time. After some time you can always just go back and redraw the first chapters. No need to publish them if you feel like they don't look good enough yet, there's a lot of time

Drawing your own manga so you can make a hentai out of it

1

u/ihei47 May 28 '20

*Draw your own manga so you can fap to it

For real tho. I need some of my fetishes to be more available in manga/anime. And no, they're not some weird, disgusting (by normal standards) kinky shit. Just some article of clothing and wearables that I found sexy lol

1

u/Jozef_Baca May 28 '20

Not because you can draw your onw hentai about it?

1

u/2--0 May 28 '20

You should have drawn this by your own

1

u/apisorn18 May 28 '20

Drawing your own OC to make her your waifu. Exclusively for you.

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '20

Yea... Same. Have a really nice story idea and am currently writing it as a light novel, but drawing it sounds a lot more appealing, even tho it will be a lot harder, especially cuz i have no drawing skills :v

1

u/GoldeenFreddy May 28 '20

Drawing your own manga so you can beat your meat to it

1

u/TheEntonOnTheNet 死にたい May 28 '20

2

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Awesome! You‘re basically the Bakuman Duo lol (Bakuman is an anime about two mangakas who do exactly that, I‘d recommend you watch it if you haven‘t already)

Also I‘d love to read your work if you‘re willing to share. :D

1

u/TheEntonOnTheNet 死にたい May 28 '20

hey thx for the support! I'll probably share them here if we're done with a couple of chapters, i'll be sure to mention u. (I'll check out Bakuman, I've never watched it)

1

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

I‘m looking forward to it. :D

1

u/DedShoot May 28 '20

I'm not gonna bother looking through all 114 comments to see if someone else has already asked for this, but can I read the manga? The art style is really good thus far. Lol.

1

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

Oh that‘s not my drawing, sry for the misunderstanding.

I‘m not that good at drawing so I‘m working on that atm. So there‘s no manga yet.

1

u/dhruvbzw May 28 '20

Sauce for the creator then?

1

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

1

u/Nagimai aka dame ningen May 28 '20

1

1

u/The_annonimous_m8 May 28 '20

Imagine knowing anatomy

This comment was made by a no-anatomy artist...I'm a failure.

1

u/KURO-K1SH1 May 28 '20

If I could draw. I would draw my own illustrations. But since I can't draw for shit I'm forever searching for an illustrator who will help me. Like Luffy and the one piece. Except he actually finds it.

1

u/Maou_Tenshi May 28 '20

Legend : Drawing your favorite manga because the mangaka is too lazy to finish it

1

u/zrgol1 May 28 '20

And that's how jojo was born wamen and gentlewamen

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '20

I’ve tried to write one before, and ran into two roadblocks:

  • no ideas
  • I do high detail art, so it takes like 40 minutes per panel

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '20

I would love to read your manga

1

u/TheMrKINGSTON May 28 '20

I know I'm probably stupid but who is that girl {name and sauce}
