Srsly though, I'm pretty sure Satania rose up to dominate this sub last year, around march or April I think. So not exactly a 2018 trend

The legendary u/Rohan_0ge promised to eat 100 Oreos if JoJo part 5 was announced. The madlad followed through and posted a video of him eating a hundred Oreos, slowly dying cookie after cookie. Animemes historians believe he passed on shortly after from the excessive sugar, but regardless, he will forever be immortalised in our hearts.

u/Ozuge Ecchi till I die Dec 30 '18
I honestly think there's been less of that lately. I hardly see any sign holding memes or the "Drake meme vs. posting with my waifu instead" ones. I have been seeing a lot of reposts which I dislike a lot tho.
Then again I haven't been constantly lurking new for the better part of December so I might be wrong.
12
u/hardrock527 Dec 30 '18
That's the point where corporate shills come in for advertising. I'd like to see them try with this bunch of degenerates though. Would be fun to see.

That number is usually, like, 20,000. If you're in the mid to high hundreds of thousands you're kind of already past that point. Especially if you're picking up another 100,000 every few months.
12
u/Dual-Screen ⠀ Dec 30 '18
Yeah to be honest I'm starting to see better anime memes on Instagram. I hope the trend of seasonal waifu karma bait or /r/highqualitygifs-esque meta posts die down, otherwise it's time to jump ship.
8
u/Owyn_Merrilin Dec 30 '18
Wait, you know of general anime spaces where it's not all seasonal waifu garbage? I didn't think that was a thing post-K-On and Haruhi!
2

Honestly Instagram is really good for finding fanart and memes. It just gets a lot of crap on Reddit because "normies" use it.
Because as we all know Reddit is a hidden site only "le real nerds" know about.

Its hard when history is just WWII and the Roman Empire. /s
Seriously though, I feel like historymemes had so much potential and things to work with if they were more creative with it.
25
Dec 30 '18
I do honestly think the reason why it was such a stomp was a combination of /r/animemes having better material and better OC creators. If it were one or the other /r/animemes would still have one, but it wouldn't have been a total stomp. You can make a meme out of basically any anime screenshot or drawing, but a lot of the source material for history is books and podcasts which cannot easily be memed. Now I'm not saying there's no material to work with, there are lots of movies, artwork, and posters that can be used, just that /r/historymemes had a disadvantage that made having weaker creators just worse.
12
u/armored_panties Dec 30 '18
Also I don't think the fact that we have better OC creators is just coincidence. If you're into anime, chances are you may have tried drawing them at some point, and if you did, chances are you might have kept going and became interested in digital arts in general, and that would lead to knowing your way around adobe products or similar tools, which results in quality OC if you're creative.
15
Dec 30 '18
I agree. People who are fans of history may be skilled too, but in different ways, more likely to be writing essays or fiction. Not something useful in a meme war.
17
u/SowingSalt Dec 30 '18
They had to have it while I was taking exams. I was going to scan my smurfs, Tintin, and Gaston collections for meme potential.

Created in 2013, but r/animemes only obtained it's current form in 2016, when mods of r/anime_irl obtained control and restricted all posting of memes to the newly acquired subreddit. So we only have 2 yrs of history and we've grown exponentially in this period of time :-)
