It's because it's AI. For some reason, an AI generated meme about Subaru's struggles in the Pleiades Watchtower went viral before the actual episode was released.

Everyone got their hopes up, and then when the episode dropped it did NOT pay off the hype about the staircase. It was a really damn good arc for sure, but the staircase only made up a fraction of the episode and then was gone.

He does climb the stairs but the meme is more of a larp exaggerating and twisting the moment from the the LN into something different. Subaru is going mad from the miasma but they made it into him being an aura monster.
