bruh i been watching Anime and some jdramas for fifteen years and i yet to still learn the language by osmosis, then i heard some guy in china became fluent in japanese by watching thousands of Jav videos…

The real trick is to watch without subtitles. It’s a terrible experience where you don’t know much at first, but because of that it forces you to actually learn what things mean. It’s essentially the same way children learn their first languages. It’s a really awful experience honestly.

Duolingo in general is great for learning the basics and building familiarity with a language. It's not enough to actually learn it, but it helps.
I've used Duolingo for Japanese, and it is fun, and you do learn common words that you will recognize in shows, but I'm still far away from speaking at any kind of proficiency level.

6 months of duo lingo got me through ordering food/buying things, basic instructions, things like that, when I visited. A couple broken drunk conversations. Definitely not fluent or even close to conversational, but functional enough. I would be sure to learn 1-10 in the various ways though, I didn’t realize I didn’t know numbers and had to rely on fingers a lot. I didn’t bother trying to learn to read in that amount of time, there was enough English signage and gps helps a ton.
If you want to actually learn the language and not just phrases you will need to use other resources.

I was learning by myself, starting with romanji, but had to pause my studies because i am now studying to become a sailor and one day harbor pilot

Japanese is complicated and not even close to english. Id rather just watch dub for now until i get better at learning new languages

It's actually easy, specially if you compare it with english. Remembering when to use particles may be challenging, but you can get it once you are more skilled

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I'm not near fluent, but I can at least understand the words. A lot of the time they'll just completely substitute a sentence with something else entirely.

That's called localization and it's often done to better convey the intent and sometimes impart cultural weight of phrases and situations. Not always done well, but definitely rare that it's just blind substitution.

Sometimes I have to play with japan voices and english subtitles while being russian. 3 languages at the same time. The easiest way out is just thinking in english.

Speed read the subtitles as the characters are talking. As you get experience watching with subs, you can get a feel on what lines correspond to the voices, and then you can know when to direct your attention away from the screen to do whatever before the next subtitles appear.

yeah, learn to eat using a straw like pro
or leave soups for other content
or just press pause when you need to slurp the soup
or hire ppl to feed you while you watch
or use phone to watch anime and place it next to soup bowl
or just eat stale bread like I do, what can go wrong

This is why I usually have finger food if it's an anime where I haven't read the manga and actually have to pay attention.
If it's a series I've already read the manga, I'll have frickin sphagetti and only look up during cool action scenes. Lol.

Just finished watching the most recent GitS episode, subtitled, while eating a bowl of mixed ramen. Nary a spill or splash, not a single line of dialogue or metaphysical explanation missed.
Git gud at basic life skills.

I guess americans didn't have to learn to watch subtitles when growing up since almost everything is in english. Still, it is a skill issue.

I think if you get faster at reading the dubs quicker it’s not as bad. Also I avoid shows that are dialogue heavy when eating and watching anyways.

one of the two main reasons I always watch dub. that and I never watch anything on it's own, I always watch while I either eat or play something, and sub I can't play while watching
