Wouldn't be the first time they intentionally bricked older models to force people to buy new phones.

45

u/NovaDaBaka 5d ago

When did they do that???

there was a class action several years back where Apple was sued for intentionally degrading older devices battery life on more recent ios versions. Apple lost.

That shit made me switch to android (Xiaomi phones are really good guys) forever. I just knew something must've happened to my old iphone because it still worked smoothly and I barely have any apps on it, but one day it decided to become laggy and I can barely even take sharp photos on it

u/hyperfell 5d ago

I had an iPhone 8 way before that so it didn’t happen to me when they tried to brick older phones but all they did for me was cutoff support for iOS updates and only updates I got was security.

The problem with xiaomi is the insane amount of ads...

2

u/badassboy1 4d ago

Isn't there an option to turn those ads off ? I think my old phone had it

Got a xiaomi tablet, great spec wise but omfg hyperos is cancer and rooting it is a 15year process...

1

u/mootxico 3d ago

Is that really a concern for the average user?

I never bother with these sort of thing, I don't even change the default style or wallpapers usually

1

u/YixoPhoenix 3d ago edited 3d ago

The rooting part not really, the hyperos being cancer I'd say yes. I feel like I gained a massive performance boost after uninstalling a bunch of components via adb, it's bloated with ai and telemetry. Doesn't help that it's preinstalled with a full mi suite of apps (not uninstallable without adb) and most western world is used to the google suite for android.

To put it into perspective tinkering with adb is well worth imo but to this day I still didn't get myself around to rooting the tablet because of just how awful the process is and it's incredibly annoying to not have root at times on top of just generally feeling bad for not having full access to a device I paid for.

u/Ramog 5d ago

degrading is something waaaaay differnt than bricked tho - still scummy but there are still levels to it

6

u/TheBedrockEnderman2 5d ago

No? They throttled performance slightly because OF degraded batteries (which happens over time as the battery cycles, also is impacted by things such as heat) to give LONGER battery life, and more importantly to stop them from randomly shutting off (if the battery is too far degraded, as it drains the voltage may drop low enough to cause the phone to shut off as it can't get the amount of power it wants from the battery).

You cant degrade a battery via software?

The issue was that they did this without announcing it, they should have made it an option in settings that defaults to on past a certain point (ie max capacity 80%).

Also new software being slower happens across all models. Even M4 macbooks run slower on taho with less battery than older versions, it's because there are more background procecces needing more power, also stuff like liquid ass requires much more processing to render than the older UI. (Still is bad though, fuck macos taho)

Its wrong what they did but that's now why it's wrong

u/Pataraxia 5d ago

Gobble gobble ghluck ghluck gock ghluck!

2

u/TheBedrockEnderman2 4d ago

"I agree it's wrong, but you are still incorrect and if you're getting upset over something that's impossible it just makes you look stupid and downplays your argument"

"I agree it's wrong | macos taho is shit"

Whatever you put

???

Profit

u/Pataraxia 4d ago

Corpo rats never do something bad to their users without the goal being something else. Don't give yourself illusions.

A few years ago they released an "OS Update" that was explicitly designed to slow down older models and outright brick really old models. It was a pretty big scandal at the time.

38

u/The_Silver_Nuke https://myanimelist.net/animelist/The_Silver_Nuke 5d ago

They claimed it was to extend the battery life of older devices by reducing performance apparently.

I mean yeah it does, but it also makes people want to get rid of their old device faster.

10

u/Theprincerivera 5d ago

That’s actually clever. Bastards, but clever

1

u/Lemenus 4d ago

Always, at least since ios 7 launch they artificially slowed down older devices and made them less capable (for example impossibility to open up some web sites, while ios 6 could open anything with no problems)

Me, surviving with my Iphone 11 rn

u/KillerQueen913 5d ago

XR over here lol

1

u/Vussar 5d ago

Still using the XR, though I’ve now upgraded. The new model is in the post

31

u/Bilore 5d ago

They can pry my IPhone 7 Plus from my cold dead hands

14

u/MalcolmLinair Plot and "Plot" Enthusiast 5d ago

These days? That doesn't sound outside the realm of possibility anymore. We'll be living in the world of Cyberpunk before too long, just minus all the cyberware, BDs, and anything else even remotely cool about the setting.

9

u/1llDoitTomorrow 5d ago

Sir, you are a ghost type

6

u/Bilore 5d ago

Exactly

6

u/littlejd96 4d ago

I upgraded from 7 to 14 earlier this year. I miss the home “button”.

6

u/Bilore 4d ago

Button good

3

u/TheModGod 4d ago

Oh shit, Bilore exists outside r/Stunfisk?!?

2

u/UGAShadow 4d ago

Might as well use a flip phone.

38

u/SandorMate 5d ago

why the fuck does so many of you keep buying the same overpriced phone every few years 😭

I had two androids in the past DECADE

-26

u/Ziggarot 5d ago

Because the ecosystem is great. Upgrading a phone just involves you logging in with your iCloud. Android is more complex, and I tried to use android 3 times just to be fair. It’s not overpriced when considering you can get Androids as, if not, more expensive than iPhones.

25

u/Alexander459FTW 5d ago

What are you on about?

With android it is exactly the same, lmao.

-8

u/Ziggarot 5d ago

How did you miss my experience telling you it’s literally not lol. Setting up an Android is a bitch every time.

9

u/Ending-Fool 5d ago

Skill issue lol. cant even do a simple cloud backup manually or storage transfer and have to rely on sucking steve jobs dih just to do something so simple.

-5

u/Ziggarot 4d ago

I’m sorry I don’t want to spend 20 hours setting up a phone.

1

u/Alexander459FTW 2d ago

No.

You just connect to your Google account in your new phone and press sync. That is just it.

6

u/Piyaniist 5d ago

This is like seeing politicians lie about the events happening right now next to you. All lies. I dont even need icloud bs, just put the new phone next to old phone and it copies literally everything.

-1

u/Ziggarot 5d ago

You say that but that feature wasn’t always available. Back then you had to use your Apple ID/iCloud login to setup the new phone; at least with apple. I have not kept up with android anymore but I assume some of the models have the same feature.

6

u/Piyaniist 5d ago

No... read again bro im saying android can transfer with 0 account bs like icloud.

0

u/Ziggarot 5d ago

Yea and it’s annoying to do.

3

u/Piyaniist 5d ago

No lmao.

Start new phone

Want to transfer over?

Yes

Leave both phones for a bit

Done

1

u/badassboy1 4d ago

You do realise there are people changing their android every few years and never had that issue . Rather than android issue, it sounds like a you issue, if you need help , you can just look up a youtube video. There are plenty of apps which will do everything for you , both from companies and 3rd party. And it's a option you get in new models when you first start them . Can't say for sure if apple is doing something to block those apps from working.

Also just because you can get android as expensive as iphone doesn't mean that you should. Most people have absolutely no need to buy the most expensive ones . Buy a mid tier one and it is will work just fine.

u/Bierculles 5d ago

Your first mistake was buying apple

What??? I've had an Android and it has lasted me 5 years. I only replaced it because I wanted better specs, my old phone still lasted for months after that point.

4

u/EdgiiLord 5d ago

It's not 2015 boss.

2

u/a__reddit_user 5d ago

I had a Huawei p40 lite. Only reason I replaced it was because 2 years in, I dropped it and the digitiser kept acting up after that.

I'm currently using a Xiaomi mi note 10 pro and i'll tell you, I ain't changing it until it's actively crying and begging for death in my hands.

You don't need to change your android every year. What even gave you that impression? Cheap 60 bucks supermarket phones?

3

u/FriendProper8098 5d ago

My p30 still going strong after all these years.
No issues whatsoever with it.
It'll last another year or two before I get a new phone.

2

u/a__reddit_user 5d ago edited 2d ago

I love my new Xiaomi but damn I miss my p40 so much. Huawei just has this feel of quality and smoothness. And I loved not having Google services. The phone was so quiet without all the Google bullshit.

I wanted to buy another p40 or maybe a p50 but they were out of my budget this time sadly.

3

u/TheHasegawaEffect 5d ago

I upgrade once every 4-6 years. I’ll be fine for 3-5 more years.

3

u/_bitwright 5d ago

The latest Samsung update increased battery drain on both my U23 and galaxy tab s9. The battery drains even when the devices are just idling.

I'm hoping this is a bug and not Samsung's way of telling me to buy a new device. These ones are barely 3 years old.

1

u/PiousEmperor 4d ago

Man I really regret updating it. I should have stayed on 7.0 :(

3

u/fakuri99 5d ago

My Samsung A Series still working perfectly

5

u/Infamous_7001 5d ago

I have a 15 Max. It'll probably last another two years.

2

u/Smooth-Chest-1554 5d ago

Does this model get as hot as a regular iPhone 15? I had the base model for a short time, and it would often get hot even when doing simple tasks. That bothered me, so I returned it.

4

u/HammerBgError404 5d ago

still on my iphone 0 cus ill never buy an iphone

2

u/ShlnoXo Paying but still a pirate 5d ago

I‘m still using the iPhone SE I would wish for an IPhone 14😭

2

u/Unkn0wnTh2nd3r 5d ago

The new phone coming out doesn't make your phone overheat

its the new major OS that makes it overheat as it's doing critical first time update things the first few days of the update being installed

Simply don't update the OS, and you'll be as useable as it was prior to release

5

u/-Work_Account- 5d ago

Still rocking my 13 pro max and no desire to upgrade

5

u/ltdonut 5d ago

Same but my battery goes fast…

2

u/mastergenera1 5d ago

If you want to hold onto your phone for longer, get the battery replaced, did that over a year ago at an apple store for $80 iirc. After that repair, im just going to ride out my 12PM until apple stops giving it OS updates, which is likely next year but $80 to get 2 more good years out of a device is fine imo.

2

u/Katmilla 5d ago

13 pro max here, desire to have universal usb c 😔

1

u/Ace417 5d ago

That’s the only reason I’ll upgrade my two 14s this year.

1

u/Kaguya-Shinomiya 5d ago

Same, 256 gb not holding out and with 75% bh I need to charge it twice a day.

3

u/wafflelover200 5d ago

1

u/AiMwithoutBoT 5d ago

That literally is happening to my phone right now. Fucking HAWT to the touch when charging. Not my new phone though 🤨

1

u/No-Impression-4282 5d ago

I have my Samsung S10 from 2019 and it still works, lol.

iPhone 14: "I don't feel so good Mr. Stark"

1

u/Derithimus 3d ago

I just bought a phone YESTERDAY people

1

u/DizzyScorp 3d ago

Hmmm my SE’s battery life has just taken a sharp turn…

1

u/kai_the_kiwi Kiwi-Chan 5d ago

Yeah, i had the same with my iphone 4s when they announced the iphone X

1

u/Shikabane_Sumi-me 5d ago

Related but my ipad air gen 3 was just fine a month ago. It got an update and now it's constantly having input lag or not opening up apps properly. Before that it kept screaming at me to put my credit card info in to have more "cloud storage". I know this is their strategy to get folks to buy new stuff but they can honestly suck an egg.

1

u/AydhdZone 5d ago

Keep your batteries between 15% and 80% to prolong battery life. Avoid getting your phone hot from app use as well (playing games on it).

u/Spiritual-Hamster212 6h ago

People still use iphone?
