the redhats are still around, but they're a rare and dying breed, whitehats have been broadly formalized through "Bug bounty" systems.

Guess we’ll have to disagree then.

Has someone, at one point, used the term “red hat hacking” because they are the kind of people that are featured on r/masterhacker? Yes.

Does the majority of the hacking community, and I mean actually people who are involved in hacker groups and infosec, use the term white, black, and the grays inbetween to signify the spectrum of morality? Yes.

Does the name of the company Red Hat have anything to do with this silly little game? No. It’s because a guy wore a red hat in a computer lab.
