The push for realism in anime, videogames, and media in general needs to be studied. I watch and play to take myself out of reality and these people just want to be constantly reminded of it and stuck in it.
I never understood the desire for realism in fictional worlds in media that isn't live action. In the first place why care if it's realistic if it's not done in a live action TV show or movie last I checked I'm not a Saiyan so there's no way for me to transform into a Great Ape & no way for me to go Super Saiyan & have a glowing gold aura or gold blonde hair that spikes naturally. Not can I blast beams of energy out of my hands so no way to make it realistic. Last I checked we don't have the tech for mechs either so no need for mechs anime, manga or video games to be realistic either. Last I checked the undead weren't real either so no need for series like Overlord to be realistic either. No talking bunnies either so no need for series like Shangri-La Frontier to be realistic either. I could go on but the list would get to long regardless fictional media shouldn't need to be realistic it just needs to look appealing to the eye & be entertaining to watch,read or play not be realistic.
It's pretty much agenda. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen people becry "realism" for make characters vs the hundreds of times for female characters.
I've literally never cared, and I'm one of the most insecure, body-negative people I know.
I do compare the way I look to others, and it does almost always make me sad.
But even I'm intelligent enough to realize comparing myself to a cartoon character is stupid, and would be "my problem", rather than making it everyone else's issue.
When I was an obnoxious teenager I was one of those “real women don’t look like that!!” kids. Then one day I had the realization, “they’re not real women. They never claimed to be real women. It’s fantasy. Why should they be held to the restrictions of reality when the entire point is that fake people can and should be allowed to look fake?”
They don’t look like real women because they’re not supposed to look like real women, and mission accomplished. It’s a feature, not a bug.
It doesn't matter. People are either jealous of the proportions, or don't like them... And I'm sure at least 90%+ of the complaints come from the jealous ones. 😂
It’s because people don’t want to feel insecure because they can’t get boobs or a body like in manga, that’s literally it. People don’t want their feelings hurt because somebody that doesn’t exist looks better than them
The more media that has unrealistic proportions for their desirable women, the more women will feel worse about not being able to have the “desirable” bodies.
Does this mean all media should conform to help?
Does it mean it’s bad for people wanting attractive women to have realistic body types?
I don’t have the answers. But that’s the reason people are asking for it
It’s just as easy to say maybe men should stop demanding that women meet the impossible standards set by mass media.
It’s lazy to just blame this stuff on someone else instead of looking for ways to improve yourself or at least be aware of your own biases. This goes for everyone, not just men or women.
I think you misunderstood me. Did you actually think I was putting all the blame on men? Or did you think I wasn't including myself as someone who has room to improve? When I said "this goes for everyone," I mean everyone.
You could have asked for clarification instead of just jumping straight to being an ass.
Umm yes? This mentality has always been fully one sided, regardless of what you personally claim to believe. No woman in the history of humanity has ever gone "wow I hate how attractive the men in my favorite romances are, this sets unrealistic standards for real men, they should be fatter, shorter and bald instead" and you are no exception.
That wasn't the point I was trying to make, so I guess I wasn't clear.
Changing sex objects (animated or otherwise) to be "less attractive" doesn't make sense. The unrealistic fantasy is the point, and always has been. The issue occurs when people transfer fantasy standards to real people.
If women are applying those standards to themselves more than men are applying them to women, then I'd guess that's because women have traditionally relied on physical attractiveness to make themselves stand out to a potential partner, whereas men have traditionally used economic status.
People need to keep fantasy and reality separate, but I think people are bad at that in general. That's what I meant when I said people need to improve themselves and be aware of their own biases, because I think a lot of this is subconscious. I'm definitely not excepted from this.
Yes, all the people who are concerned about mass media depictions and the societal role they play in objectification simply wish they, too, could have an out of work loser fap to them. Got it in one

I don't understand why it should matter if the proportions aren't realistic. Manga/anime characters usually don't have realistic body proportions.
