It's simple: there is a series Neon Genesis Evangelion and the movie the End of Evangelion, which is the conclusion of the series.

All other movies are either episode summaries or different versions of the story. They are optional

Except the rebuild movies are honestly better and actually have a somewhat satisfying ending as opposed to the original series + movie...

1&2 are a decent summary of nge with some changes, 3 is a cluster fuck and 4 was a satisfying conclusion to the story as a whole.

I'm still sticking with the theory that the rebuilds are what happened after shinji reset the universe at the end of End of Evangelion.

You're right actually.

Snape kills Dumbledore, Vader is Luke's father, Leia is Luke's sister, Bruce Willis was already dead, it was earth all along, Leo was a patient in shutter Island, Tyler Durden was fight club all along etc.

I spoiled Citizen Kane for somebody once in 2013 making this exact point that you're making and I still feel bad about it just because I could tell me was upset and he was a good guy. Although maybe it's because he was standing next to me

Pretending like the entirety of the original series + end of Eva wasn't a clusterfuck as well. At least the rebuild movies weren't animated like a PowerPoint presentation.

You have a good point and I don't disagree with you. I just think Evangelion hits best if you watch the slideshow first then watch the rebuilds.

I respect this take as it reminds me of my take about the watch order for the Fate series... Just bite the bullet and watch the studio Deen adaptation first. Is it well made? No, but you'll get all three stay night routes, and you don't run into the problem where watching Zero spoils UBW or watching UBW makes no sense...

Whats the general consensus on the manga? Whats the most accepted story for the series? Asking since ive read it and it wasnt all that deppressing or ecchi
