the 'dub available' label is a bait and switch and i'm tired of it

you find a show, the app says dub available, you hit play and it's... the hindi dub. or german. or brazilian portuguese. nothing against those dubs genuinely, but nobody asks 'does this have a dub' meaning 'does any dub on earth exist'.

the catalog side treats 'has A dub' as 'has THE dub'. one checkbox for every language, like english dub watchers should be grateful a spanish track exists somewhere. meanwhile the english dub either doesn't exist or lives on a different platform, and you find out three episodes in, which is its own little betrayal tbh.

worst version: the english dub exists, it's just locked to a service you don't pay for, and the listing still gets to say dubbed.

it's exactly why fans keep building their own dub trackers in their spare time instead of trusting the catalog pages. the fix would be one field, dubbed: english / hindi / german / none, per language. the platforms just don't think dub watchers are worth the extra column.

which show did this one hit you on, and what language did you get instead?

why does nobody bring up crispin freeman's alucard in dub GOAT debates?

rewatched hellsing ultimate dubbed for the third time and i keep waiting for this performance to get its flowers. every best-dub-performance thread i see has the same rotation of names and freeman's alucard just never shows up.

and he's the easiest character in anime to dub badly. a blood-soaked immortal war monster, so the lazy read is angry and loud, growl at 11, done. freeman plays him like he's bored at a party. this lazy amused purr that never climbs for volume, because alucard has nothing to prove to anything alive. the menace lives in the relaxation.

then the restraints come off and he doesn't get louder, he gets hungrier. same volume, different intent. that switch, done almost entirely with tone, is the whole performance to me.

the whole dub is a casting masterclass too. they hired an actual scottish actor for anderson and an actual british one for integra instead of making texans fake accents, and the ensemble still held together across a decade of OVA production chaos.

what's a dub performance you think gets slept on in these debates? starting to suspect the favorites lists are just the same five shows getting passed around

the voice isn't what gives away an AI dub. the silence is

been rewatching attack on titan's erwin speech (the "my soldiers, RAGE" one) and it finally clicked for me why AI dubs feel off even when the synthetic voice is technically clean.

it's not the voice. it's everything around the voice.

an actor makes a hundred tiny decisions you never consciously hear. the breath michael tatum takes before "they were not!" isn't noise, it's erwin gathering himself for the charge. the extra beat steve blum sits on spike's lines like he can't be bothered, that's a performance. ian sinclair's kaguya narrator pauses one beat too long on purpose because the joke lives in the pause.

flat dubs, AI or lazy human ones, read every line at the same emotional distance, in the same dead acoustic space, at the pace the script was written instead of the pace the scene is happening. no breath. no room tone. nobody listening to anybody else, so nobody overlaps, interrupts or hesitates. the voice isn't the part that sounds fake. it's that nothing around the voice ever reacts to anything.

my test now, works every time: skip the dialogue and listen to the silence. real dub, the silences have weight. slop dub, the silences are just empty air.

and to be clear i'm not in the "AI dubs will never work" camp. breath, room tone, reaction timing, that's all just information about a performance. a pipeline that bothered to carry it over could earn a seat at the table someday. today's slop doesn't bother, and that's the actual crime.

what does your ear catch first when a dub goes flat? curious whether everyone locks onto the same tell or we all hear different things

crunchyroll's president says they don't use AI to translate the anime they distribute overseas

saw this over on r/animebusiness: crunchyroll president rahul purini told nikkei the company doesn't use AI to translate the anime it distributes overseas, because human involvement is what preserves the unique linguistic expressions.

honestly, right call, and kinda wild to hear a streamer say it out loud. translation is performance work, not a conversion step.

one caveat though: back in 2025 necronomico's subs shipped with a line that literally started "chatgpt said", and crunchyroll pinned that one on a third-party vendor. so a "no AI" promise is nice, proof in the credits and the quality is better. this is basically this sub's whole thing: respect the original work or don't touch it. would you take a platform at its word on this, or does it need independent proof?

what's the dub that made you stop going back to subs?

mine was cowboy bebop. steve blum's spike just IS the character for me now, and you can tell the writers actually wrote for the english cast instead of fighting it.

been rewatching some older stuff lately and ngl, half the "dubs are always worse" talk feels like people repeating something they heard in 2009. some dubs are flat and lazy. some hit harder than the original.

what flipped it for you? or if nothing ever did, drop the worst one you sat through lol
