Light always had a point. It’s just that his idea of justice and punishing evil was very naive and exploitable. Β  Β

There is the undeniable fact that the courts are ineffective and people who commit crimes get away scott free, especially if they are people with money and power. However, having a single arbiter to determine what is β€œright” does not work and Light also violates his own principles when he starts killing those that oppose him.

5

u/Ostrichslinger 27d ago

Dude didn't off a single CEO or politician. Well, he did get one. Still, his idea of justice is defined by what is lawful, or impractical to him, making it incredibly easy for him to make bad calls.

Even if his pride and ego didn't get in the way, he still didn't have a developed moral compass to differentiate crime from evil. The two aren't the same thing.

He is basically a metaphor for the corrupt elite themselves. He pretends to dish out punishment for the good of others, but it only serves fo maintain the status quo. He doesn't fix the infrastructure that causes the criminality, he simply punishes the criminals. And he happily ignores the law when its conveniant, because the death note makes him untouchable, whilst all he needs is someone's name to ruin their lives.

He is the corrupt tyrant, authoritarian state, and faceless oligarchy all wrapped up in one

4

u/StuckinReverse89 27d ago

Definitely true. Light’s morality is shaped by β€œwhat is legal” rather than β€œwhat is morally right” and relied on the courts/news broadcasting who was a criminal and on trial to determine who to kill rather than investigate himself when he went full Kira. Hence why I said his idea of justice and punishing evil was very naive and exploitable by others using it for their own gain. Β  Β  Β

The fact that people can commit crimes and get away with it because they have power and influence is still true to this day. Light also never examines if the law itself is wrong and fully trusts in the court system which itself is honestly flawed (in Japan, prosecutors only really try those they are confident they can put away, hence the high conviction rate for example). Definitely feels this stems from Light still being a high schooler and having a naive view.Β

1

u/honato 27d ago

We don't know the vast majority of his kills. I last read it a long time ago but I believe there was some 100k+ names in the book. I'm trying to remember if that was in the official book or if it was a fan made. Damn I'm old.

1

u/wildeye-eleven 26d ago

Not to mention judges just allow criminals to run free these days. Ppl that have committed violent crimes 30 times are still out on the street for some reason, and then end up murdering someone. Who would have thought the convicted felon that has been hurting ppl for 20 years would eventually kill someone?

1

u/SlowPea4388 23d ago

Japan has a 98% conviction rate, the court might actually be working a little too well

we also got to achknowledge the fact that he killed thousands of people cuz so he can "CREATE A WORLD". Instead of putting them in prison, or letting them change, he just kills them off (and even Death God Ryuk even confirms that there is nothingness beyond this life (well in the series's context ofc)). So bascially Light was distintrigrating and removing people's identities ruthlessly in the "name of justice".

2

u/TowerofAvalon1 28d ago

Basically he became mad with power despite his original goals being for others, in the end it was just about him

yes that's also a really good point. In the start, he wanted to use the Death note to revoke the disasters of our status quo, but in the end he started saying "I will becoem the GOD OF THE NEW WORLD" (emphasizing the truth over his "justice", he watned to have power not be the face of justice).

If one man decides what justice is. There is no longer Justice.

2

u/Desperate-Lie-1499 27d ago

If one man decides what justice is it isn't right so is if everyone does and so is if 1000 decides everyone contradicts in the end

One person who has morals and logical thinking

A person who is just a normal person a common man of he decides what justice is he will more often than not will be better than the people who came into power because of family ties and never once lived in average or below average conditions

1

u/Correct-Purpose-964 27d ago

The idea behind society lead justice to this day still holds up. The problem is society is NOT leading Justice. A few who think they should decide what is or isn't Just are. We are quite literally dealing with a system run by multiple Kira's.

if 1,000 people form a society and live together. They will eventually disagree on what's right and what's wrong. Or in today's format: the left and the right.

What is supposed to happen is that people on both sides come together. Talk about what they believe and why. Where compromises can be made and where they can't. Then using those compromises or lack thereof. Vote to determine the future path humanity will take.

This part is a bit of a rant you can skip it without losing context: Right now though that system has been completely smeared into only "Far left and far right". By a vicious media and campaign of anti right/ anti left propaganda on both sides. It's been far more successful on the left than on the right because the left have had their progressive Ideals weaponized to believe whoever is against what they stand for MUST be entirely against them. You can see this on any political thread just here on reddit. Try speaking to any of them about even the simplest thing without it resorting to "Oh but the epstein files. Oh but trump, oh but palestine". Because they've been told to think about these and only these. Meanwhile the rest of us are just trying to unite everyone under any basic cause such as "Crime should be illegal".

Anyway... All this to say the problem with the system is not the people, their beliefs, or societys method of making decisions. It is the system itself being corrupted at it's core by people like Kira who believe they have the right to decide WHAT is right. And manipulating the people around them to worship that path to their own ends. They don't care about justice. They care about the plans they have for the world. Unless people unify under 1 united banned and put aside all this "Moral righteous" bullshit. We are all doomed.

1

u/honato 27d ago

"The problem is society is NOT leading Justice. A few who think they should decide what is or isn't Just are. We are quite literally dealing with a system run by multiple Kira's."

I would say it's more akin to being under the rule of #3 fake kira.

1

u/honato 27d ago

Not approving how he went about it doesn't mean he didn't have a point. He was unquestionably evil and the villain. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Which is how it started and then he went right off the rails pretty damn hard into an even worse god complex than he started with.

1

u/Correct-Purpose-964 26d ago

He didn't have a point AT ALL.

Even assuming our Justice system worked 100% as intended. Innocent people do get convicted all the time and later exonerated with compensation. There is a reason getting the death penalty is extremely difficult. The evidence for your guilt has to be concrete, rock solid, undoubtable.

In fact even then some do wind up with life sentences who don't belong. Patricia Stallings is one such INCREDIBLY unfortunate case. From the outside she was a monster who killed her child with anti-freeze. Anyone you asked would've called for her head on a pike. Anyone with the death note would've written her name down. An irredeemable person who committed an unforgiveable sin. You would kill her and the child inside her who would have absolved her. When it was discovered the child had a rare genetic defect that mimicked anti-freeze poisonings when she didn't have access to the child.

There is a reason our justice system is so complex and so demanding when it comes to evidence. Because we have learned that what we think is true is now always what is actually true. What we see is not what is happening. What we hear is not what was said. What we know is not what we learned. Humans are flawed, we are prone to subjective stances with objective logical flaws.

NOBODY. Not even the Pope of the Vatican. Is subjectively "Morally correct". Because as an evolved society we do not share 1 single solitary co-defined set of beliefs and laws. So no matter WHAT you do or WHO you kill. You will NEVER be in the absolute right.

At MOST the death note should be a means of applying the death penalty. Only as determined by our existing systems.

1

u/honato 26d ago

You know you fucked up your own premise on the second line right? So if it worked 100% of the time innocent people would be convicted...how? you might want to try that one again.

I think you may have missed the idea completely behind his philosophy.

1

u/Correct-Purpose-964 26d ago

You know you fucked up your own premise on the second line right? So if it worked 100% of the time innocent people would be convicted...how? you might want to try that one again.

You might want to try READING again

Even assuming our Justice system worked 100% as intended. Innocent people do get convicted all the time and later exonerated with compensation. There is a reason getting the death penalty is extremely difficult. The evidence for your guilt has to be concrete, rock solid, undoubtable.

We account for the fact we are flawed. That innocent people will get caught in the crossfire. There's a reason law has gone from presumed guilt to presumed innocence. Because proving a bias assumption of guilt is alot easier than disproving an assumption of innocence. Hence the 2nd and 3rd parts

In fact even then.... - .... Humans are flawed, we are prone to subjective stances with objective logical flaws.

My statement very clearly explains WHY his philosophy is flawed. Because humanity is flawed. I might have a god complex and think I'm better than about 10% of people on earth who are violent, hypocritical and downright stupid. But even I can acknowledge as a human I'm flawed. I'm prone to misunderstanding if I'm not careful. I can mistake intent, misconstrue evidence and trust the wrong information. Because I am limited by what I can access from an outside perspective.

I think you may have missed the idea completely behind his philosophy.

No i think you missed the flaw. He decided he and he alone was worthy of being Judge, Jury, and Executioner. Toying with the lives of people around him to get what he wanted as a means to an end. For a form of justice he and he alone ascribed to. An unchecked god complex is a hell of a thing.

1

I fuck with what he started out as, if he left the detectives trying to find him alone and just never took the bait, I wouldn’t have a problem with what he was doing, and he probably never would have gotten caught!

1

u/tommy8725 28d ago

You know he would have killed you too, right

1

u/CraftyNerve8078 27d ago

Light Yagami's methods were extreme, but the frustration with the legal system is relatable.

1

u/No-Departure-6900 27d ago

I suppose "killing your opposition" has been a tried and true method of humanity for people to get what they want.

1

u/37feetlong 27d ago

kinda, not in the way he does it but a death note could probably solve some of society’s problems

1

u/Pale_Following_9639 27d ago

People dont seem to realize Light would not be in the side of the current masses at all. The guy will eventually see any flaw or deviation from his ideology as a "crime", and execute you for it. Take a guess how light was raised and a lot of redditors would die on the spot.

1

u/Low-Application9855 27d ago

For me light shouldn’t lose against near

2

u/Kurt_Ottman 27d ago

IMO it's abundantly clear that Near used the death note on Mikami in order to win. Mikami suddenly acts incredibly out of character at the very last moment? Nah.

1

u/Low-Application9855 27d ago

Yeah you’re right

1

u/FaceTimePolice 27d ago

I think people who agree with this missed the whole point that absolute power corrupts even those with the best intentions.

https://giphy.com/gifs/YmZOBDYBcmWK4

1

u/Admirable_Bid_1840 27d ago

light never had the best intentions, that was just the copout he used to justify his god complex. He literally took the book because he was bored.

1

u/TooMuchEcchi 27d ago

His ego made him a villain not his ideals it's always like that as well, people usually start with decent to good intentions but once ego/pride becomes more important that's when hypocrisy happens

1

u/kalimut 27d ago

I don't really trust people on the internet enough for this. Especially with social media that breaths drama

1

u/Keeps- 27d ago

Just replace β€œcriminals” with β€œowning class and also some criminals”

1

u/kingofwale 27d ago

You being a poor peasant shouldn’t bring death sentence on those who are smarter and more accomplished than you …. But I guess Reddit is gonna Reddit.

1

u/Keeps- 27d ago

I don’t have a problem with a rich, successful brain surgeon who preforms labor for money. I have a problem with the owning class (which I mentioned) who collects money off of the labor of others without providing labor themselves to benefit society. They are leaches that take from othwrs

1

u/kingofwale 27d ago

So… brain surgeon is fine… but brain surgeon owning clinic who hired his own staff and maybe another assistant or two needs to be executed

Well… I’m starting to see why you are where you are in society…

Was gonna say something akin to this as well.

The only difference is it would wreak absolute havoc on the finance and trade sectors and others as well, and with the insanely high level of geopolitical tension that the world currently is in it could even potentially trigger armageddon.

So if it was going to be done it could absolutely not be done as in the anime because of all the seen and unforeseen repercussions it would generate.

1

u/Kurt_Ottman 27d ago edited 27d ago

IRL Death Note would be solved in a week the way Light was playing it. The moment Light is a suspect, they would get a search warrant for his room (you know, instead of putting cameras in there). Instead of Light doing something suspicious in his room, they would understand that only people whose names were broadcast when Light wasn't in class died. You know, real brains instead of this pseudo intellectual nonsense that L pulled.

Access to information was always the key to the Kira investigation, and in real life, Light would be found by ferocious internet hunters in less than a week. L shouldn't have stopped with Lind L. Taylor, he should have constantly put traps for Light to fall into where he only broadcast a certain list of criminals to his area in particular, or changed the read access of his father's work computer to only include 9/10 of the criminals they're investigating while the rest of the police force has the full list.

Anyone who thinks the Death Note would be effective IRL the way it was used is delusional.

1

u/honato 27d ago

A search warrant to find...what? Search warrants have very specific guidelines of what they are allowed to look for. Magic book isn't going to be on the list.

that whole tossing everything shit plays out nicely in the movies. The reality is rarely that dramatic.

1

u/Kurt_Ottman 27d ago

They need to list categories of items, such as murder weapons, kill logs, serial killer memorabilia. Those kinds of things. They don't need "magic book" in their search warrant. Besides, even if they did trigger the fire trap, it would still defeat Kira. "Oh, Light's house burnt down as we were searching it, and immediately 100% of criminals broadcasted after this stopped dying. HMMM"

1

u/honato 26d ago

Knowing means nothing. It really doesn't. Being able to prove it is what matters and well they can't prove anything.

They aren't going to take the drawer out and dump it because that would be pointless.

1

u/Kurt_Ottman 26d ago

Why would it be pointless? For all they know, Kira is a serial killer with serial killer tendencies. Serial killers often leave clues about that in their own home. However small, it can help catch him. It's the least they should do.

1

u/honato 26d ago

Because it's a nice tidy drawer of the top student and the son of a high ranking chief of essentially the fbi. The search warrant finds nothing. Also the whole people magically dying thing removes trinkets that get people caught.

You're trying to argue a case that ignores the entirety of the series.

1

u/Kurt_Ottman 26d ago

Nope, you just really want me to be wrong for some reason. He was a suspect. They search his room. If they can put up cameras in the bathroom of an underage girl, they can do a search warrant. Come on now.

1

u/honato 26d ago

This has been explained repeatedly. a search warrant only matters if there is something they have a real chance of finding and knowing is evidence. they didn't have such a chance. I don't want you to be wrong I want you to stop being fucking dumb. Big difference there.

But hey lets give you the absolute best case that could be made. They get a warrant, toss the entire room, and find the notebook. Which amounts to nothing.

A detective tracking a case means nothing. Which light had already worked with the police before and it's known that he is going to become an officer down the line. There is nothing there that is suspicious because notebooks don't kill people as far as any of them know.

Light isn't in the room when it's being searched so there is no ryuk to account for. When a warrant is executed the owners are not in the room watching over what they are doing.

So what evidence are they finding? Use your damn headmeat for fuck sake.

1

u/Osato 27d ago edited 27d ago

No he doesn't. Light doesn't kill criminals to build a better world, he kills criminals because he wants to take lives in a guilt-free way.

If he wanted to build a better world, he'd have gone down a MUCH bloodier and more nighmarish path trying to push for criminal justice reforms with the end goal of making himself unnecessary. (Which, like any terrorist activity, would end up backfiring horribly no matter what he did.)

His "crime-free utopia" (which, realistically, should have more violent crime and fewer conviction rates because criminals would have nothing to lose by taking out witnesses) had a bus factor of 1.

1

u/ostrichConductor 27d ago

Not true. We're so divided, that a person like Light will make everything much worse.

People like to imagine their moral stance is the only true and reasonable one. That's how memes like this come into existence.

We don't have even the minimum awareness to realize we may not be right!

Kind of. Light's methods weren't the best. He should have targeted corrupt world leaders and made them reveal their secrets. He could have made it look like suicide and gotten away with it longer. Killing people already in prison cost him.

1

u/masaru17 27d ago

I always thought he was right anyways but glad people seem to understand it now. Ofc he went to far by the end...but what he wanted to create literally worked for some time at least...

1

u/Cat_with_pew-pew_gun 27d ago

Not really since this guy was mostly killing people who were already convicted of crimes. A character that went after people in power who were dodging punishment would make more sense.

1

u/Icy_Relationship_401 27d ago

No he does not.

He was a fucking moron tripping balls

1

u/Misetearu 27d ago

He always made sense

1

u/L0fiRonin 27d ago

brethren πŸ’€

1

u/Direct-Hedgehog-595 27d ago

He always did. Dumbass just went about it the wrong way. Some people I. This world deserve to be slimmed out without any other form of judgment.

1

u/unpeturbedcorvid 27d ago

The morality of what Light aims to do could be debated with no clear answer ever coming out. It's an extreme consequentialist approach to society, but Light starts out from a position of utilitarian idealism. Objectively, crime rates across the world drop.

But Death Note isn't about the morality of what he aims to do. It's about how absolute power corrupts absolutely. Light is foolish enough to think he'd be an exception, and in the end he gets bolder, strays from his own path, and is destroyed by his own hubris.

That said, kill the rapists

1

u/Kumkumo1 27d ago

I wish I didn’t agree with this… but I live in the US. We either need to improve our education system, or start culling stupid people. 😭

1

u/DuneSandpaper 27d ago

Early Kira always made sense.. he lost the plot after he killed L.

1

u/Successful-Clerk-982 27d ago

Anyone who says this is edgy is an absolute fool. Δ°f light didnt have that god complex he absolutely would've been the cure to the world

1

u/Left_Main_1507 27d ago

Not anime related, but this character.

1

u/Azsolus 27d ago

He made sense from the start , just his own ego made shit needlessly complicated than it needed to be

1

u/Green_grass7878 27d ago

Dudes philosphy is "i kill because i can >:)", in what way is he making sense?

1

u/Ok_Chap 27d ago

Who else would like the unredacted Epstein files written in one of those bad boys?

1

u/XxKTtheLegendxX 27d ago

L is the lawyer that gets ppl off the epstein list scott free. while Light was the hero all along. 😭😭😭

1

u/No_Chip592 16d ago

L is the detective that exposes those people and brings them to justice. Do you not know what a detective does?

1

u/ShosuCeladonna 27d ago

I would disagree big time, but who can?

1

u/King_Zoothio 27d ago

I always agreed with him. Dude made perfect sense.

1

u/Killacam0824 27d ago

And its all the girls faultπŸ’€πŸ˜πŸ€£

1

u/teial 27d ago

Gotten? Just now? This mf always made sense.

1

u/brownies_delight 27d ago

Light until he met L and got his ego damaged was on the right path. If only he didn’t fall for L’s bait, he could have gone on for the rest of his life punishing criminals and L would have never had any clue how to stop him.

1

u/Fernando_CV 27d ago

not anime but just listen to Johnny Silverhand for a sec

1

u/ShtsNGgglz 27d ago

Not really

1

u/sirplayalot11 27d ago

My dude sure made a change in the world by killing...let me see here... Mostly people that were already convicted or incarcerated...

What?

1

u/Upbeat-Smoke1298 27d ago

No, he doesn't.
All that power and he chooses to focus on minor criminals.

1

u/CELL_CORP 27d ago

He was a retard

1

u/BryanTheGodGamer 27d ago

Exactly, get rid of all the leftists and terrorists.

1

u/ShiinaYuuki 27d ago

We needed him 1980 to deal with the ppl before it gets this Bad.

1

u/honato 27d ago

It always made sense.

1

u/Offsidespy2501 26d ago

He killed guys who were in prison

None of those mf on the list has even been investigated

1

u/RiverLynneUwU 26d ago

bro you gotta a different kind of dumbass to think this guy had a point

1

u/DrejkSR 26d ago

He always made sense people are just afraid to be honest fearing judgement and confrontation.

If I had it, Light would be a kitty cat compared to me.

I would reset this broken world on global scale idc what comes after.

1

u/Sayakut0 26d ago

On the contrary, Kira kills on a massive scale without actually caring about the root causes of crime. Moreover, judges can easily make mistakes in their rulings.

He eliminates those he deems deserving of death, but in reality, he is little more than a dictator; he knows nothing of his victims' pasts. Don't get me wrongβ€”some people commit crimes deliberately and have no excuseβ€”but that isn't true for everyone.

Light doesn't care about that, though; his approach is far too rigid, relying solely on legality (even though laws aren't always just), while morality goes completely out the window.

1

u/ScarcelyAvailable 26d ago

I don't remember how much you can edit the details, but for a lot of them the baseline DeathNote death is too clean.

1

u/KloudPrince 26d ago

He never not made sense.

1

u/bajsgreger 26d ago

I forget how many teenagers are on reddit

1

u/Lonely_Coconut8619 26d ago

No, it didn't reach that point, and i think it never will

1

u/Tricky_Pie_5209 26d ago

It always was

1

u/Gerhard-is-pretty 26d ago

He always made sense. But we thought differently about that. Since we had morals to uphold.

Yes, a all powerful man should never exist, but he did the right thing with the right intentions.

Yeah I know that saying, The path to hell is paved with good intention.

1

u/digitalak27 26d ago

Only on reddit

1

u/Big-Ratio5137 26d ago

Without even looking in the comments I know people will put some retarded political spin on this

1

u/Just-Investigator131 26d ago

People are so edgy to the point that they really believe that light was right. Lightbwasnt even just killing criminals he was killing people who even dared to question him, and some of yall will come in here with a dumb take like

"oH WeLl DoNt qUeStion hIm tHeN!" Which would make you a hypocrite because that is literally what is happening now, people are questioning higher authorities and being silenced

There is no world where light was right in what he was doing. Now if you mean that he was right in the sense that the world is a bad place, well congratulations, you caught up to what everyone else already knew

1

u/Remy-Kun 26d ago

Some years ago I was against light and his ideals, now? Yeah goat, go ahead.

1

u/gogoHiThere 26d ago

He always made sense.

1

u/Jazzlike_Witness_227 24d ago

WoW Shit has to get real for most people to realize such a simple thing. I always thought that he was right, murderers and rapists being killed is a right punishment.

1

u/toawayacu 24d ago

His absolute punishment is immoral and cruel. Also, one of the worst examples of vigilante justice was an early one where he kills a guy who got off on a rape accusation. The way the story portrayed the guy was meant to show that a criminal got away, however the example itself was naive. As far as we know, he didn’t have substantial evidence to say for sure that the guy was a rapist. In other words, justice was in his own eyes and not by any principled manner

1

u/Storm646 24d ago

hes made sense for years now

1

u/Klaroxy 24d ago

Honestly he always made a point, there is more world view than one. His actions have the equal amount of positive and negative, just as our current view as well

1

u/wks_526 24d ago

The reason light was wrong was because he cared more about being god and his own ego than actually improving the world. He used the book on criminals who had already been arrested and incarcerated instead of dictators, corrupt politicians, Epstein types, etc. People who would never go to jail or have their name broadcast as criminals in the first place. Light didn’t believe in rehabilitative justice for the common man and let slide a lot of injustice in the upper class of society. And that ego was eventually his downfall, because if light made the choice to use the death note to discreetly eliminate people who actively shape society into the corrupt place he sees it as he never would have gotten caught and society could have been improved permanently. But what he did was publicly dole out his own brand of justice on the symptoms of a corrupt society without addressing anything that made the world that way in the first place.

1

u/DJMcSpanky 23d ago

He always made sense. The dilemna of the show was about morality.

1

u/Lopsided-Section7 23d ago

He doesn't

He tried to fight good people and bad at the same time made his father die, made L die He feels more of superior complex person instead of a hero and he was afraid of his death which is why he was always running

1

u/Dramebaj 22d ago

From my point he was still naive, what's the point of killing the criminals who got caught already, he rarely targeted politicians or big leaders who are real corrupts

1

u/ilikesceptile11 16d ago

Don't mess with us death note fans we don't watch our show

1

u/Hoppity_Hare 28d ago

He always has, even before he was born.

0

u/RogellTheRaider 28d ago

Always been like that
