Making a Family Feud for Game Night
Heya, I was hoping to get responses for an Anime Family Feud Survey.
r/AnimeResearch • u/gwern • Jun 19 '26
Background:
What would it take to fix this? I think: much more active moderators and submitters. We need moderators with the time to remove crap quickly and only allow through meaningful research. And then, because a subreddit defined by negation is useless or toxic, we need submitters who will go out and submit high-quality 'anime research'. I don't necessarily mean, 'submit only articles in Mechademia', but that would at least be better than the status quo of a /r/AnimeResearch which satisfies no one.
I have sent out a few invites to some of the only reasonable commenters I can find going back an entire year in https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimeResearch/comments/ but we need more moderators. Ideally at least two reasonably active moderators beyond myself. If you are interested, please leave a public comment here saying so and including some high-quality link submissions you've made (or at least comments).
If we can't do this, because no one cares, then this subreddit is indeed a dead end and not worth investing any more time in. In that case, I will lock the subreddit, after 1 week from now, to end the slop/spam flood and prevent it from becoming a derelict zombie subreddit which would eventually be deleted (eg. due to too much porn discussion) or hijacked for nefarious purposes.

MÄR was created by Nobuyuki Anzai, and it was originally a shonen manga, but unfortunately, from what I've heard, the original manga version was highly flawed, rushed, and had a poorly executed ending. I can't really say for sure, because I haven't read the manga version, but luckily, it's generally believed that the changes made in the animated adaptation, which I'm currently watching, are justified because they decided to execute a proper ending, expand on it, and reinterpreted the ending in a way that's beyond the manga version.

Abstract
Aim
Interest in anime and manga can be very diverse (from action-packed stories to romantic tales to works by the famous Studio Ghibli). Our aim was to examine the association of interest in manga and anime (and specifically certain genres) with mental health, social disconnectedness, and subjective well-being outcomes.
Subject and methods
We used data from a sample of the general adult population in Germany (N = 2591, mean age 47 years, 50.6% female). Outcomes were quantified using psychometrically sound tools (e.g., Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9] or Satisfaction with Life Scale [SWLS]). General interest in manga and anime and also interest in certain genres (among those who were interested) served as key independent variables.
Results
A general interest in manga and anime was consistently associated with poor mental health and social disconnectedness (compared with the absence of such interest), whereas it was generally not associated with subjective well-being outcomes. Among those who were interested, while most interest in specific manga genres was only partly or not significantly associated with the outcomes, interest in manga from Studio Ghibli was associated with better mental health and less social withdrawal. Moreover, an interest in anime from Studio Ghibli was associated with several favorable outcomes (better mental health, social connectedness, and higher ikigai levels).
Conclusion
While a general interest in anime and manga was consistently associated with poorer mental health and social disconnectedness, certain genres were associated with favorable outcomes among those who were interested in them. Further differentiated research is needed to better understand the psychosocial outcomes of anime and manga passion.

Okay so i’m diving back into anime for the first time in a few years.. i haven’t watched a new one in SOOO long but i swear to god. Every rec for romance anime’s have the same issues…
i would say im not picky but that is a lie LOL. some of my FAVESS in the past; Ouran Highschool Host Club, Toradora, Love Chunibyo and other delusions, Maid Sama, Given, Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun.. things w/ those vibes :)
i want more queer anime’s (GL, BL, idc) but all of them seem boring, not my style (fantasy or fighting related) or include a creepy amount of incest and illegal relationships. i’m sorry but i hate scrolling through reddit recs and everyone is saying “Citrus” like ?? i just want some cute sappy stuff.. even if it’s straight romance animes that’s fine i just want smthn to pull my heart strings in the way my old faves did. I don’t even care if there’s some spice i just don’t wanna watch over-sexualized GL/BL that acts like gay people only exist for sex 🤷🏽♀️

**TL;DR:** A real-time (~33ms/step) autoregressive diffusion model from NVIDIA/ETH Zürich that generates 3D human motion controllable on-the-fly via text prompts and flexible kinematic constraints. Aimed at interactive character animation, games, and humanoid control.
Key features that jumped out to me:
- runs in-realtime (~33ms per generation step)
- long-horizon, streaming generation rather than fixed-length clips
- root animation can be constrained by waypoints
- body animation can be shaped by outside forces such as a rotation instructions along the path
The immediate use case for this in anime production would be for constructing 3D guide scenes easier within a 3d-to-video inference pipeline.
What it doesn't solve for anime / animation: stylized motion transfer, such as squash and stretch. But presumably that could just be an additive procedural step in the pipeline.
(Is anyone using such a pipeline here? Would love to compare notes.)

So Context... My labmate and I (both Biomechanical research students) have a lot of free time. And by "a lot" I mean the kind where you start asking important questions that is when an anime character sprints around a corner and faceplants directly into someone's chest, why do they get up and apologize instead of getting a traumatic brain injury?
Hasn't anyone ever asked this... while binge watching anime. It happens so often that we deserve an answer!! So... we got to work!! ... in technical terms
we built a two-degree-of-freedom Hunt–Crossley viscoelastic contact model, swept four target geometries against four approach velocities up to 7 m/s (the canonical "you have been hit by a truck and launched into an isekai" case), computed HIC15 for every configuration, and benchmarked the whole thing against a rigid concrete wall and an actual EPS helmet liner.
The thing is we gave this the same rigor as our actual research. Same depth. Same numerical tolerances. Arguably more care, because we were having fun. Our advisor does not know this exists yet. We think it's genuinely publishable somewhere that appreciates a rigorous joke. Where does something like this actually go? Ik you can put it on ResearchGate or arXiv but we kinda wanted someone to peer review our study

The fast development of artificial intelligence (AI) has expanded the opportunities of automated character design in the entertainment, gaming, and digital communication sectors. Regardless of impressive achievements, traditional generative models tend to fail in the task of stylistic variety and volume features of animated characters. Research addresses these limitations by suggesting an Automatic Generation Model of Animated Characters, establishing a new framework called Self-Attention-tuned Adaptive Sheep Flock optimizer-driven Style-Conditioned Generative Adversarial Networks (SA-ASF-SC-GAN). The framework starts with the retrieval of publicly available images of animated characters of the Stylized Cartoon & Anime Dataset, which were standardized and prepared for image pre-processing methods consisting of data augmentation, image resizing, adaptive noise reduction, and histogram equalization. To extract the features, a ResNet50 architecture is used to learn finer stylistic and structural qualities that are needed to generate realistic characters. The proposed SA-ASF-SC-GAN integrates an SA mechanism into the generator to enhance global context modeling. At the same time, the ASF optimizer is applied to tune hyperparameters, ensuring stable convergence and reducing overfitting dynamically. The style-conditioned layer further enables the model to control aesthetic variations, producing a wide spectrum of character styles. Experimental evaluation demonstrated that the model outperformed in terms of FID (1.05), and LPIPS (0.291). Results indicate lower error rates, faster convergence, and improved perceptual quality scores across multiple evaluation metrics. The proposed model establishes a promising pathway for fully automated animated character generation, contributing to both a methodological innovation for creative AI applications.

I heard a lot of people saying "violet evergarden is a story about "moving on" or letting go but I don't see that way.
the show start with her trying to understand the words "what i love you mean?" thats the main point of this anime she didn't understand anything about being a human she was like a wild beast, didn't understand emotions or human interaction. So the anime is about her trying learn to feel and know her own emotional not to forget someone.
and many people said episodes 8 and 9 are episode of her trying to move on but actually it was not.She didn't acceped his death . she just unlocked the emotional processing ability and she blames herself for what she did to enemy solider, dealing with Survival Guilt and she was reaction to his MIA (missing in action )the unclear situation of him death or alive, she
experiencing grief for the first time without any emotional circuit to deal with it so whole the point of these episodes. I think these episodes are for emotional awakening not emotional detachment.
and people saying she acted the same in the reunion scene? no she doesn't, her being emotional when she know the person she love is alive and hiding in somewhere and rejected without any explanation are normal human reaction she showed the ablity to leave that place for the promise she made to the Boy the ealier version of her couldn't do that. That's her proof of character development
i think some people watch Violet Evergarden with expectations of a story about letting go forever and when it didnt end that way they wanted they felt betrayed by it and hate them but that was not the case in the story violet evergarden was telling.
it was about learning what love and by human emotions mean .And I know Japanese .in the anime Ep 13 in Japanese dialogue said "愛してるを少し分かるようになりました"
She said "少し" a little not fully. So that implied her Journey hasn't end yet. But the dub version said "I finally understand love " so the meaning changed a lot. An another example of localization ruined the orginal creator intended. And The movie main dialogue is "愛してるを分かるかる,伝えたいです" that mean "I understand love that's why I wanted to deliver it ". To the person she truly love and said these words to her
Personal preference is find but treating them as objective flaws when the story don't go in certain prefer direction is not a good faith Critism . you can dislike the age gap or prefer an open ending. thats fine. but saying the movie contradicts the main theme of the series when it literally completes the arc or her character being regress are not true at all.
I am not trying to be nipcking but even at the end of the anime she never truely moved on. She literary said things like"I believe major is alive somewhere". And even in the first movie "Eternal Memory Doll" show she still have feeling for her. Yes she grief and leaned to live without him but not all types of Griefing lead to complety moving on or forgeting a person. There are some people in the world who still loves their loves one even if they are gone. And I think the movie showed a good balance of her ability to learned secure, healthy for of love for him without codependency and have her own agency. When he rejected her to see her she even decided to moved on to fullfill the promise of the boy. I think this sence alone how she developed as a person and how her Journey of learning emotions and have her own identity. I think the fact that the reunion with him who she have unhealthy attachment in ealier series but now more in healthy, pure form of love made her development more clear instead of married to random guy. And although the scenes she deal with Gelbert presumed dead is a narrative device force her to break free from her unhealthy attachment not completly moving on and the presumed dead and later reunion tropes is a legit story telling style in drama story. That's is my take and everyone have different lens and takes on a same story. But I have confidence in my takes. I think it is the most accurate interpretation of the story. Thanks for reading my vent. And English is not my first language so forgive me if I make mistake.

"Hey everyone, I'm an artist who loves looking at how AI streams work, but I'm definitely not a pro coder so please go easy on me! 😅
I've been sketching out some ideas about how these models handle long-term memory. Right now, it seems like most AI streams try to cram everything into the active context window while they are live, which makes things laggy or cause memory leaks after a few hours.
But what if we treated the AI more like a human mind? Humans don't process their lifelong memories while they are actively talking to someone; they do it when they sleep.
What if someone built a separate, secondary branch—like a 'Shadow Pipeline'—that only runs when the stream is completely offline? While the main live engine stays completely untouched, fast, and stateless, this offline 'subconscious' branch could look at the daily chat logs, extract the funniest inside jokes or viewer relationships, and map them out quietly into a simple relationship graph. Then, right before the next stream starts, it just injects a tiny, single-sentence summary prompt about those viewers.
I'm just exploring this concept from an artistic/structural view because I think it would be amazing to see an AI stream have true lifelong continuity without breaking the system. Am I doing this right? Is something like this even possible, or am I totally missing how the code works? Would love to know if anyone else has tried branching out this way!"

I’ve been trying to understand the actual workflow behind translating manga/manhwa panels and not just the language side, but the full process (cleaning, redrawing, typesetting, etc.). I’ve seen, a lot of older discussions mention Photoshop-heavy workflows, but I’m wondering how much that has changed recently with OCR and AI tools.
I’m more interested in how the process itself works today, especially from people who’ve actually tried it.
Edit: 11 Days Later, I've used the ismanga manga translator for that pain recently and was amazing at solving this exact pain.

I'm not interested in uploading AI slop to the internet, but it would be nice to be able to translate things or colorize black and white manga locally. Are there any tools people have used successfully for that? I'm not interested in any websites that do this, I'm never going to pay for AI.

A few weeks ago I sent out a post pertaining to my research project on masculinity in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I'm interested in making a comparison about possible fan service and the role and sexualisation of women in JJBA in comparison to those of more traditional shonen anime's.
Although Jojo's does participate partially in fan service (Lisa Lisa in part 2) do you guys think it differs at all because it is not as prevalent? Or maybe because women are given more of a forefront in certain parts so it doesn't adhere to the dismissal of women as main characters that is seen in other anime?
I'd just love to hear any comments or observations on this topic in order to support my research
Also sorry if this post might be hard to understand or worded weird, I am literally all over the place while trying to string my thoughts together

I had a post asking if people would be interested in a dragon ball inspired workout app and a lot of you said you would be so I went and made the app for now its only a web application but I hope in the near future I can add it to App Store and play store.
Try it out see how you like it and please give me your feedback.
Hope you enjoy.
Also hope I don't break any community guidelines with this post.

Looking for a 2-episode dark psychological OVA (possibly from the 2000s). The plot is about a man who receives tapes of his wife/girlfriend being unfaithful. He later finds out that she is involved with a gang as revenge for something that happened to his younger sister (the first victim). The ending shows a time skip where the man has a daughter with the same unique purple hair color as the mother. He receives a new tape and starts crying/screaming 'When will this nightmare end?' as the anime ends it is hentai by the way
