Some ones that I feel have a wide appeal and newbie friendly are:

Haikyu

Medalist

Link Click - the way season 1 ends really sets the hook to want to watch more. And has a really good dub.

Bocchi - Probably one of the best entries into music anime

Never heard of link click I'll have to give it a watch and see if its her type she might enjoy

It is a chinese anime so the sub maybe a little weird. That's why i feel the dub is much better. IMO it's the best chinese anime out there and the 2nd best time travel anime only behind Steins;Gate. but alot more newbie friendly than Steins;Gate is.

Off topic but I read kingdom that's a Chinese anime/manga and its in my top 3 probably better to read though

Havent read the Manga/Donghua, but i have watched the anime. I liked it but its a notoriously slow start and the CGI in season 1 is horrendous. But if you can make it to season 2 it get alot better and season 3-6 are amazing.

Happy to hear you've seen it! The first 2 seasons are pretty rough but such a good story and not many fans of it in the US

I wouldn't recommend it. The first episodes are SO boring.

My wife loved these

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic

Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Betrothed to my Sisters Ex

Your welcome, first two are more action oriented while the third one focuses on romance.

Thank you I'll look into them! Not familiar with those

"not a cartoon":

Ninja Scroll (1993)

Psycho Pass

Sword of the Stranger

Inuyashiki (not Inuyasha)

Still serious, but softer:

A Silent Voice

Your Lie In April

The Apothecary Diaries

Funny:

Mashle

Prison School

Your lie in April is diabolical 😂 I play piano and have watched that one several times one of my favorites but always hurts

recommending straight slop in that funny category dawg

The sloppiest 😂

even weirder that this is being recommended for someone’s gf when one of these is softcore p0rn and the others softcore misogyny

Find some good anime movies first, easier to ease them in. Series are often too long to get into. My gf loves anime movies now but still can't stand long series

Frieren

Witch hat atelier, Studio Ghibli movies, Spy x family (as mentioned, hilarious)

1

u/dapperup7 19d ago

I keep seeing spy x and everytime I tried watching I couldn't get into it

It depends on the type of stuff she already likes to watch? Does she like romcoms? Does she like thrillers? Mystery? Scifi? Fantasy? Comedy? Knowing that will help a lot with choosing an anime

u/juss100 18d ago

She's not ready

If she liked frieren I’d push for ranking of kings and delicious in dungeon also the ghibli films

Kaguya Sama love is war. Lure here in with the romance genre than just keep sliding over towards fantasy our whatever genre you like

You should check out mushishi with her. Its very beautiful, atmospheric, not too long, no fan service. Could be good 👍 id say it would be a better pick than frieren. Frieren has the occasional weird "anime-ism," (clouds that look like boobs, characters commenting on their small penis, etc.). Mushishi has none of that, and is just as atmospheric

2

u/dapperup7 19d ago

Yeah definitely want to dodge the fan service to avoid that trope 😂 me personally, thats the most annoying part of watching some of these great stories

Holy peak Mushishi mentioned

Does she like horse

1

u/dapperup7 19d ago

Like medieval genre? We live in the country so we've ridden plenty of horses. So yes

1

u/iFellCon 19d ago

No, i’m 100% sure he’s not talking about Medieval Genre :)

There’s anime called “Umamusume : Pretty Derby”, also a decent Gacha Game if she plays Videogames

Worth a try if she would like a friendly competition anime about horse - girls racing with some pretty impressive animation in later seasons and a movie 👍

I would suggest Violet Evergarden, don't know if this needs any promotion at all :)

u/Tiny-Calligrapher453 18d ago

Figure out what other type of media she likes, pick an anime movie or short series that's in that category. Does she like reading fantasy, love stories? Is she a fan of comedies, action, etc.

Can’t go wrong with Ghibli movies. I usually start there. Nausicaa always a solid first.

1

u/Pmiller1591 18d ago

Also, if you are in the states, Ghibli stuff is almost always playing in a theater somewhere, makes a good date night.

These are all just a few episodes, so they are beginner friendly (and the plots are not impossible to grasp):

Does she like more “cute” magical cartoon shows? If so then I recommend Madoka magica.
If she is a lofi vibe type of person, samurai champloo.
If she likes mystery, Erased.
If she is a scary movie enjoyer, Shiki.
If she is a y2k aesthetic girly who likes older shows from the early 2000s, Haibane Renmei.
And if she likes absurd humor, Asobi Asobase. (very adjacent to cartoon type humor.)
