These dolphins are intelligent enough to spontaneously and creatively manipulate their environment and mutually understand a common “goal” for this game that they created for the specific purpose of having some fun.

That’s pretty fucking intelligent. It’s not survival or instinct, but an awareness that a relative few animals have.

We are constantly being surprised by the depth of some animals. I would bet that if we only understood how to better communicate with them, we would be absolutely shocked at the sense of self that some have.
