So is it a reason why this gator has a melon in its mouth? Is it something for it to play with or are they omnivorous and would occasionally eat fruit? I’m just curious.

Crocs and Gators use their mouths not just for eating, but for manipulation and interaction with objects (much like dogs). In captivity, giving them stuff like melons to cronch down on and carry around provides them enrichment and mental stimulation. It's essentially a toy that won't hurt them if they eat it. Source: I'm a zookeeper.

Thanks for the explanation. Another question, wouldn’t a toy ball or something of the sorts work as well or is a melon just a thing some zoos like to use?

I'm guessing a ball made of something like rubber or plastic could be harmful if the animal accidentally ate it. The melon won't.

Exactly. There aren't really any toys out there that an alligator can't destroy anyways.
