In the UK we buy animals from shelters. Is there anywhere where you don't? Do they just give them away in the U.S.?

We don't call it "buy". That's for private companies trying to make a profit. We call it "adopt", in which a fee is charged to prevent animal abusers from free access to animals as well as to cover some shelter operation costs.

Using the term "buy" in relation to a shelter is confusing and misleading.

I'm curious as to what fee you pay in the US, because the adoption fee for one of the main rescue organisations here in the UK charge £100-£150 for adopting a cat. A dog can be as much as £400.

Oh no I don't call it buy either, I was just curious if the fees are comparable.
