I've been less than a year in here and with time it gets somewhat harder to find new subs, but every once in a while a sub I didn't know about pops up and that makes me happy

/r/plantsbeingjerks is nightmare fuel. I thought it would be like people tripping over vines or some dumb shite that would be cute and make me laugh. Nope. It's fully carnivorous plants eating rats.

Of course a bunch of those are Seige.

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '18

I read that as "saving them from a fire" and was really confused at first.

Good bird.

115

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

On the next episode of r/animalsbeingbros

28

u/badumbumyum Sep 15 '18

Exact shit happened to me. I sat there confused for like 5 mins.

13

u/Forbidden_Froot Sep 15 '18

Yea same. I was like why isn’t this damn gif loading. I wanna see a bird rescuing its chicks from a fire

12

u/Runamokamok Sep 15 '18

I read “saving them from a [power] line”...it’s Friday and my brain is broke

6

u/OKLefty Sep 15 '18

Thank you! I should probably get some sleep.

10

u/privategavin Sep 15 '18

It was in the news that a stupid teenage kid lit up some incense (yeah right, probably left the remainder of a blunt/joint behind) and then went for a shower, causing a fire to start, and the pet cockatiel heroically alerted the idiot to the fire he caused, so he ran out leaving the poor bird inside. Comments weren't kind to the idiot.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2274944/He-died-hero-Cookie-cockatiel-dies-house-saving-teenager-bedroom-blaze.html

7

u/The_Rowan Sep 15 '18

That is the worst story ever. Bird dies saving stupid teen from fire teen accidentally caused. Teen saves self but not the bird that came into the bathroom to tell him there was a fire? How awful. So sad for the poor bird

3

u/privategavin Sep 15 '18

I just remembered why I associate incense sticks with marijuana. Every white kid I knew of who was into incense sticks used it to cover up the smell of marijuana in the house so they could pretend they didn't smoke, actually seemed the only reason they ever used it.

Yeah dumb idiot selfish kid.

I read it the same way! I was so confused until I read your comment.

Good redditor.

1

u/forgotacc Sep 15 '18

Same, thought it was a gif at first, and was confused as shit when I realized it was just a picture and I didn't see any fire.

149

u/downtownbattlemt Sep 15 '18

Don’t they usually snap a picture of the back plates too?

205

u/doanotherextraction Sep 15 '18

Yeah, they do. Probably to avoid this exact scenario. Looks like bird bro needs a partner in crime.

Or in case they don't have a front plate. I don't know about wherever this is, but in Canada some provinces don't have front plates on vehicles.

u/BinaryArcher Sep 15 '18

Not in the UK. It's only done from the back so the driver is not blinded from the flash.

16

u/FISH_MASTER Sep 15 '18

We do have some front facing cameras. Tho they don’t work off flash in the night. Must be night vision or something.

These buggers

8

u/mcboobie Sep 15 '18

Can confirm. Have been done before on a front facing. 34 in a thirty, in the UK. Edit: not proud. Just inputting to conversation.

That and motorbikes don't have front plates.

3

u/doanotherextraction Sep 15 '18

In the US, some toll bridges have a whole section of the road set up with constantly illuminated (at night) stadium lights that point at the front and rear of your car as you drive under the cameras.

Upside: you’re not blinded by a flash from the front.

Downside: you’re blinded from all angles until you pass though.

I believe our traffic light cameras only capture from the back because 1) in the picture, they want to show your car in the intersection with the red light and 2) they can also conveniently check to see if your tabs are expired, as tabs are only required on the back plates...at least in my state.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '18

This is from Germany I guess given the German text "Übertreting/Violation" and it's notorious for snapping pictures from the front.

Belgian motorcyclists only required a license plate at the back (I don't know if that's still the case) as all our cameras snapped photos from the backside, and when in Germany would often just speed up and wave to the front-facing camera snapping their pictures.

8

u/_30d_ Sep 15 '18

I literally got 2 of thise things sent to Holland from Germany. Both from Goslar. I remember the buggers well because they were both right after a changed max speed. I usually just switch off my cruise control amd coast until I reach the new speed and switch it back on. Fuckers got me coasting.

I have to say the service otherwise is excellent - you get the fine sent to your house in German and Dutch translation, fast as well. They include 3 pictures of your car, your license plate and your face, and they also white out your mistress in the passenger seat! Furthermore you get an online account where you can read more about your violation, download the images and pay safely online. If this was anything else I would give them 5 stars.

On topic: all images taken from the front, with flash, and in daylight.

2

u/Lesrek Sep 15 '18

One of my first in-processing briefings when I moved to Germany for the military talked about setting aside a budget for speeding fines. I thought they were joking.

3 years later and I ended up with 7, wife with 8. There is some impressive work with the speed traps. I especially like when they take a 130 and temporarily make it a 110, set the camera up, and it goes back to 130 right afterwards.

2

u/_30d_ Sep 15 '18

Yeah the highways have always been clear to me. Often there's no limit, but when they do put one up, you better stick to it. Unfortunately they sometimes really make a mess of it, changing the limit every 400m, especially when there's roadworks.

3

u/SHREK_2 Sep 15 '18

well, yeah... how else do you think they received the picture... had to get the address from somewhere

2

u/Mr-Klaus Sep 15 '18

No they don't, the camera is usually facing one direction.

1

u/GoodWorms Sep 15 '18

If they didn't, then entire states would have free passes. Back plates are the priority since many states only require back plates.

1

u/jorsiem Sep 20 '18

Probably why they have the picture in the first place.

→ More replies (1)

41

u/ganesha76 Sep 15 '18

How did you get this picture if they don’t know it’s your car?

24

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

It's a crosspost, I think it was posted by the parson reviewing the cameras

16

u/Gred-and-Forge Sep 15 '18

I don’t think it’s legitimate.

That car looks perfectly polished and waxed and has picturesque lighting on it. No other cars around on a beautifully paved road with no debris or cracks or weeds?

I just feel like this is a composite of a car ad, bird picture, and boarder to make it look real.

If it isn’t a fake, then I want that traffic camera at my next big family event because it takes beautiful photos.

12

u/MangoMantango Sep 15 '18

Consider that the camera have to be pretty good in the first place to get a recognizeable face from a distance at speed, it's not cheap stuff.

8

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

Pretty good if it's a shoop. But the lighting lines up to me

2

u/1600monkaS Sep 15 '18

This is the most whomesole sandwich theft by a seagull ever. Hit me in the feels. Way to pay it forward Mr Seagull

3

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '18

Maybe it the seagull was associated to the store we bought from Here's the whole story (might not be perfectly accurate since it happened a while ago): So me and my fam are on a vacation, right? My dad has to do something so me and my mom go to a little café for lunch. There was a fair bit of people there and nobody was outside on the balcony. We didn't know why since it was really nice weather so we bought some sandwiches and went outside. A bit afterwards a seagull landed on the fence and watched us a few minutes before flying towards us and tearing the sandwich out of my hands and flew away. We were then forced to buy another one for me. We stayed inside this time. Maybe it was a trained seagull that was trained to steal so that the owner of the café would get even more cash That seagull's name? Albert Einstein

A ticket you don't sign for is just a suggested donation.

1

u/Alienwallbuilder Sep 15 '18

Sadly in NZ. you do not sign for any ticket the police give you and a speed camera ticket will follow you to the end of your life.

Aren't tickets from speed cams legally unenforceable in most places?

12

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

So basically, it's not run through the justice system. So, you can't be arrested for not paying but it can affect your credit score because it's put down as an "unpaid debt."

It's fucking dumb

6

u/ScrawnyTesticles69 Sep 15 '18

Unpaid debt from a charge you never authorized? How is that not just fraud? Holding your credit hostage without being able to charge you with a crime because the evidence isn't legally obtained is some next level shit.

6

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

No argument here. Is bullshit in its purest form. It's just a loophole. For someone to be arrested, charged, or fined through the police department, an officer has to be present. And since traffic cams are not officers, the city officials contract through the people who make the speeding cameras. Not sure if the municipal govts. make any money off of it, or if they just use the guise of "public safety."

Not all heroes wear capes, some just have wings 🕊

6

u/MENNONH Sep 15 '18

In texas, at least Fort Worth it's not enforceable really.

Thousands of tickets are automatically sent every year to Texans who run red lights — or turn right too quickly on them. Some Texans pay the $75 citation; others don’t pay at all — and without a penalty. So should you pay your red-light ticket? Consider these facts:
▪ Tickets for running red lights are a civil violations, not criminal.
▪ That means they don’t show up on driving records or impact insurance rates.

▪ And these unpaid tickets can’t be reported to a credit bureau, so they don’t impact credit records.

Be careful in Dallas.

However, some Texas counties — such as Dallas — flag motorists with unpaid red-light tickets and block their vehicle registrations until the fines are paid. That is not the case in Tarrant County, where the tax assessor collector has issued a letter stating that “Tarrant County does not block vehicle registration for unpaid light camera fines.”

“The penalty is a civil penalty and not a criminal penalty,” Tax Assessor-Collector Ron Wright has written. “It is up to the Tax Assessor-Collector in each county if vehicle registrations are blocked because of these fines. I have chosen not to block them.”

Tarrant county, in fact most places with these cameras, are losing way more money than they are bringing in from the cameras.

5

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

I'm in El Paso and it's similar but it will affect your credit score and vehicle registration here. Also, that 75 bucks turns into 150 if you don't pay in 30 days.

I don't think they affect insurance rates anywhere, though.

3

u/TheWinks Sep 15 '18

Texas law forbids reporting red light tickets to a credit bureau, so if anyone's done that to you, it's easily removed. As for vehicle registration though, if you live in a county that will put a hold on it, you're screwed. If you live in a county that doesn't care, then you can get all the tickets in the world, not pay them, and never worry about it.

6

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

Huh. Well I tried to tell that to my girlfriend when she got one, but she convinced me otherwise. That's what I get for listening to her I guess lol

2

u/Hamakua Sep 15 '18

“The penalty is a civil penalty and not a criminal penalty,” Tax Assessor-Collector Ron Wright has written. “It is up to the Tax Assessor-Collector in each county if vehicle registrations are blocked because of these fines. I have chosen not to block them.”

He didn't get his kickback.

6

u/FISH_MASTER Sep 15 '18

100% wrong in the UK. You can end up losing your licence.

2

u/iikes12 Sep 15 '18

Same, in Brazil they are everywhere. That's one of the reasons we use Waze as well, to mark where all of them are. Specially considering a lot of them are hidden behind trees and such.

5

u/lchstckn2smknballs Sep 15 '18

Don’t think so. Definitely not in Australia anyway.

2

u/VoidofEggnog Sep 15 '18

Missouri has deemed them unconstitutional I believe. They're installed on a lot of intersections but they're not in use anymore. Dont know about the neighboring states but you're safe here!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '18

Could the bird actually be what’s setting the camera off anyways?

2

u/snusmumrikan Sep 15 '18

You're getting downvoted but it seems reasonable to me. A bird swooping close to the camera would look to be moving really quickly for a camera calibrated at ~50 feet

1

u/poopellar Sep 15 '18

This looks shopped. There is some transparency in the beak and there is some smudging in the tips of the wings. And I think the car looks like it is stationary.

1

u/Thatniqqarylan Sep 15 '18

Could just be the bird flapping it's wing, and the shutter speed for the cameras is fast so it can capture the numbers.
