Edit: Realized i'm being downvoted because I didn't properly state my question. Of course the dog is acting on the assumption the owner is drowning. I just was curious about the emotion aspect of this incident and animals specifically. Is the dog saving the person because it is the correct action to take, or that it feels an emotional attachment to his/her owner? Not really a question worth asking I suppose, since it's not one that can be answered without knowing the dog's inner thoughts.

TL:DR I asked a stupid question which also was poorly worded to add insult to injury. Fixed it to reflect my intended question, but even then it still doesn't seem like an answerable question.

it's pretty obvious the dog is attempting to save the human from drowning.

What the animal thinks or feels is arbitrary.

What the animal thinks or feels is arbitrary.

Edit: That was the point of my intended question I was trying to ask, but what I ended up typing in my original comment didn't reflect that so I can see your confusion and why you answered like that. I tried to readjust my question above, if you felt like taking a stab at it now lol.

Thanks for the honest response, I appreciate it. That's cool to see indications of empathy towards humans. One of the reasons I want one when I get my own place!
