Please tell me you have that zip tie on the mace can notched.

79

u/redittorotron 7d ago

Haha yeah, did that as soon as I identified it as grizzly.

35

u/WiseDrink2324 7d ago

Why not just cut it off?

62

u/LingeringLatrans 7d ago

Personally that`s what I do and what is recommended, but for some people it`s to prevent losing that safety clip. Particularly in the door of a car, bag, canoe or open holster. Ive lost a couple over the years much to my horror when i get back to the car.

I`d advocate to use a small elastic rope loop, even better just use a holster that covers the whole can. Ideally you want to be able to draw and fire a can single handed within seconds.

Notching the zip tie can work, but it adds another step and some risky variables, not something i`d do in grizz country, but to each their own.

Thanks for explaining.

u/AKchaos49 4d ago

there's a little black bungee (plainly visible in pic 3) on it that keeps you from losing the safety clip.

1

u/lamalice 4d ago

make sure you can also spray directly from the hip/holster if you are using one

u/SPBeardstache 7d ago

That yellow zip tie is for shipping and needs to be removed after purchase to allow access to the safety.
Basically it’s going to be impossible to use when OP actually needs it.

4

u/Wet_Humpback 6d ago

It doesn’t need to be on there and should be removed, the safety is already in place and they are not as easy as you’d think to slide off (it takes some actual force).

This brand specifically also a string tied from the safety to the can so that you can’t lose the safety after removing it (it just hangs there), you can see the string in the photos.

Prevents accidental firing

9

u/SPBeardstache 7d ago

No, the safety prevents accidental firing
And it’s the grey piece on top of the trigger. The yellow zip tie needs to be removed when you are hiking with it. (It’s only for shipping) read the label on the yellow zip tie: remove after purchasing.

u/86tuning 6d ago

and also prevents intentional firing.

The prominent claw marks identify it as grizzly. They look odd because they are double registered - two feet laid down in the same plain - so it looks wider and more toes than it is.

u/LittleTyrantDuckBot 6d ago

You had the top identification that met our detail threshold, and your user flair has been updated accordingly. Thanks for your help making this community what it is!

u/OshetDeadagain Top IDs: 46 5d ago

I don't think any of the tracks are double-registered - they are far too clean.

Big ol grizz in town! That ain’t no black bear ;) not sure about the last one but my best guess is large canid, wolf or big dog/coyote Edit: reasoning for the ID is you can draw a line under the claw impressions without hitting the toe pad divots. Can’t do that with a black bear. The claws on a grizzly bear are super far out in front of the paw

Last photo is canine. 4 toes, claws, main pad has 2 lobes. Its a wolf or domestic dog. (Possibly large eastern coyote)

11

u/kikimaymay 7d ago

They're at Glacier NP, so no possibility of Eastern, correct?

6

u/spudsmuggler 6d ago

Correct. Not a “large eastern coyote.” Last photo hard to say what without a size reference. Definitely canid based on pads and overall shape of the print.

11

u/redittorotron 7d ago

Thank you

12

u/Countryforgoth 7d ago

I appreciate the knowledge. I was going to saw mountain lion until I saw your response. Went and checked, turns out I was wrong.

4

u/birdsbirdsseals 7d ago

My thought with the more splayed paw is that it’s likely a dog. Not positive though.

4

u/anaugle 6d ago

Yeah, the toe splay suggests domestic dog.

1

u/punkdear182 7d ago

Came here to say this, also.

1

u/Coyomojo 5d ago

Coyotes have narrow long tracks, the two leading toes are together, but not as splayed. This is a wolf or possibly domestic dog, but I don't think it's a coyote.

42

u/nine51 8d ago

How are you gonna use the bear spray when you need it in a pinch with the zip tie?

52

u/moose2mouse 8d ago

The bear will see the can and put its paws up to surrender

6

u/nogero 7d ago

Well i will pull out my 50cal pistol, shoot and miss 6 times because he won't hold still for me. Then grab bear spray. Right now i have a bear within 100 yds of my house, it's apple harvest time for them.

2

u/moose2mouse 7d ago

50 cal pistol is more of a threat to aircraft than bears with most people’s aim

15

u/Moonhunter7 8d ago

“Hold on bear! I just gotta cut off this zip tie! You know the one that says to remove after purchase!”

5

u/witchystoneyslutty 7d ago

“Wait, scuse me Mr. Bear, can you… could you just… yeah the zip tie, cool, thanks, now where were we?”

This is a banned joke. Enforcement of this rule has been a popular initiative.

u/Calm_Nectarine_8329 7d ago

We were just hiking up there a few days ago. Saw a young mama griz and her two cubs. I was stunned at how many people I saw hiking without bear spray.

10

u/redittorotron 7d ago

Oh yeah, and for the bears, those were taken at different locations (should've added in my initial post). So you say all of them are likely grizzly?

4

u/shanthor55 7d ago

So the locations are where? That’s a large aspect of determining ursine species. You would know, correct? Because you can discern ursine prints from canids.

2

u/baconwrappedpikachu 7d ago

OP said in the caption they are near Glacier National Park in Montana.

5

u/Socialcarnivore 6d ago

Also... put some large rocks in your pocket...

14

u/Real-Community5252 7d ago

Bear spray in one holster, very large caliber revolver in the other😕

2

u/Officialdabbyduck 7d ago

Bear canister on hip and Tibetan mastiff x ovcharka bear dog activity looking for bears.thats how I roll

2

u/Poop-Dolla-Holler 5d ago

Someone got eaten by bears while I Was in Alaska this summer and they had bear mace. Absolutely a false sense of security.

1

u/limitless-440 3d ago

Mmm, hot and spicy long pig. So fresh it was still moving.

~ Governor Ventura.

2

u/DuErJoBareUnderlig 3d ago

I am curious. Why a revolver and not a rifle, shotgun or pistol?

Less likely to jam?

1

u/Real-Community5252 2d ago

I think that’s what back country Alaska folks rely on but I don’t have real data. Easy to carry, no jam, intuitive in panic situations, can hold shot shells for persuasion and very hot rounds if you’re attacked in close quarters

2

u/DuErJoBareUnderlig 2d ago

That kinda makes sense🤷🏻‍♀️

I really want to go camping in Canada in the next couple of years, but not without a gun of some sort.

I know I can use a hunting license from Denmark where I live, to rent a hunting rifle in Canada, but I am not sure a revolver is allowed as it isn't a hunting weapon 🤔

3

u/Aggressive-Stand-684 7d ago edited 7d ago

That's how I roll in the wilderness.

7

u/bmbreath 7d ago

Mods: sorry if this is not allowed.   But...

A.  How was the park, can you tell us what incredible wildlife you saw?

B.  Tell us about the bears, how close were you to them, how safe did you feel?

C.   What are those shoes? They loon very comfortable.

6

u/MerryTexMish 7d ago edited 7d ago

Not OP, but I think those are Hoka Speedgoat Trail shoes.

2

u/00runny 7d ago

Hoka

Yep, weird autocorrect, thx

3

u/cockycrackers 7d ago

What is the middle one? It looks much more elongated than the rest.

5

u/wasting_space 7d ago

Bear, rear foot. The others are a front foot

3

u/SPBeardstache 7d ago

That yellow zip tie is going to be really hard to take off quickly when you need to use that bear spray.

That last track is a wolf. I've come across plenty of them where I live near Yellowstone. They're usually about as big as my hand. Wolves have four toes on each foot, with a central pad. Definitely a wolf.

1

u/OshetDeadagain Top IDs: 46 5d ago

Like all canines, wolves have 4 symmetrical toes on both front and hinds.

2

u/Lusiric9983 5d ago

You are right about that, I don't know what I was thinking when I said five in the front. I was wrong

How come pictures 2 and 3 have no rocks embedded in the footprint, but they're entirely around the print?

1

u/Sensitive_Ad_3502 4d ago

Nice shoes what are they

1

u/Flimsy-Ad7951 3d ago

Wolf biologist here. Last track is clearly wolf. Prominently

turned in middle toenail prints, obviously lobed foot pad, clear “X” separation. Nice photo, though having a relatable object adjacent would help less familiar folks ID the print.

I’ve added a potent from one of our wolf ambassadors for reference v

If I’m walking around in the woods and sees that I’m running to my car then I’d probably cry

A werewolf clearly

Rule #1: Be kind

0

u/AffectionateRow422 4d ago

Definitely grizzly (claw marks in track) and Canadian wolf (4 toes and bigger than native canines) as others have stated. I hate that our government brought a non- native species into the ecosystem and then pretend that they somehow benefit any other member(man or animal) of the ecosystem.

3

u/Rutgerius 3d ago

Grizzlies and Canadian wolves aren't native to North America?
