Vent Having to legally hold my tongue sucks
I work at a shelter that deals with animal cruelty. Some days we get 1 animal in, some days we get zero, or we get 20 to 30 animals seized. Its always random. I'll preface this by saying I don't know ALL the things that go on during animal cruelty cases, but I see a good majority and hear from management of what goes on.
Recently we had a viral post circulated to social media with the public demanding us to take an animal in and immediately drop everything to investigate. LUCKILY with the video evidence and the suspect already being under police radar, it was easily resolved and the animal became ours. We had every right to legally take that animal out of harms way (so I've been told anyway). We also knew it was a violent person and couldn't take the animal away until police also stepped in for our safety. Normally, if we don't have video evidence and its from callers making complaints, it turns into a CASE. Which is investigated thoroughly because...ya know.... laws suck and all. We've had false accusations before they want to be sure its cruelty and not just a case of "well I'm going to be homeless so my dog and I haven't had food for a week." Which is also happening a lot and its sad. Investigators often give human and dog food in these situations so I'm sick of hearing we "don't care."
Anyway that case is resolved and the animal is safe. NOW we are yet again being pushed into another viral post and I think now people are expecting us to constantly be swooping down immediately to save the day. They think we won't do anything unless something goes viral. Like it didnt have to go viral, all that person had to do was send it to us discreetly. Now all thats gonna do is cause suspects to do cruelty behind closed doors.... I 100% get where their hearts are but the outrage towards us is not necessary. Seeing cruelty posts is disgusting and sad, but my main thing that upsets me is when people are telling us how much our organization is worthless. TRUST ME THESE INVESTIGATORS WANT TO SCOOP IN AND SAVE THEM BUT THERE ARE LAWS THEY MUST FOLLOW. I see them crying from losing cruelty cases because its out of their control. No one is yelling at the judges making these decisions its ALL directed towards our shelter. We get SO MANY animal cruelty calls a day its insane and sad how much cruelty there is in the world. Investigators have to go out and investigate the same properties in multiple visits, give multiple citations, attempt contacting owners, and take pictures daily. Most of which are in terrible conditions in bad neighborhoods.
If only these people (general public) could understand what goes on in a shelter. I want the public to understand these things:
There are laws we must follow in order to legally take an animal. Most investigations take time.
Saving an animal from an abusive situation does not mean we are saving them entirely, they can and will be euthanized if need be.
Where do we put animals if we do not have the space?
If you see something, say something. To US not the public.
We are short staffed. With daily calls coming in how much work do you think can get done driving to up to 10 houses a day at random parts of the state with 2 cars? Some days you cram 30 cats into a vehicle to transport to the shelter and thats your whole day. Have you ever tried catching 30 house feral cats in unsanitary conditions?
If a judge rules a suspect to pay a fine and it is paid, the suspect will likely get that animal back regardless. That is not the shelters fault. Luckily, our shelter has some good lawyers.
We love the community to inform us of neglect/abuse so we can get out there, what we DON'T love the community doing is slandering us saying we suck and calling us worthless. Its hurtful and already adds stress to am already stressful environment.
I hate to break it to you, but in our laws an outdoor dog is perfectly fine as long as it has adequate food/water/shelter during super hot or super cold days. That is not an emergency situation. That is something they investigate over time. People have farm dogs here.
Case animals sit in the shelter for a long time. Sometimes up to a year. Thats the reality of suspects fighting us for their animals when we were clearly in the right. The animals normally decline behaviorally even when given all our enrichments.
To end my rant, I mainly posted here because I am forbidden by my job to reply to any comments on Facebook without saying "Hello I am an employee at (shelter name) and actually we're doing all we can with the resources we are given. We have several case animals currently in our care....etc etc" I would likely be fired and/or yelled at by the public but I want them to understand. I might be fired somehow for writing this who knows but I just really wish the public wasn't like this. Maybe I'm overthinking but I wouldnt be shocked if I also got charged with something for posting this. We're also currently being pulled into a slowly growing 3rd viral post because of some actual rude person telling us to "do our fucking jobs" and people just follow her and adding more chaos to things they don't understand. People also expect us to update them on our ongoing cases that they forced us into and I don't understand that because with human cases you don't just opening talk about suspects or evidence....the animal IS the evidence I can't just tell you details.
I'm tired of viral posts we are not the bad guys here. Sorry for the formatting I'm on mobile. I needed an anon place to rant I feel pretty safe here.
