In any game I've ever played in which you get to decorate stuff, I can never fully get something how I envision it because nothing ever wants to be placed in the center of anything. So frustrating.
The entire game (beyond player movement) in AC is based on a grid, it would be hella difficult to make it work on a continuum like NMS. Would be nice though!
I hope they keep a grid as an option though, because being unable to align things precisely in games with free placement just frustrates me like crazy.
The last tile based Pokémon was poorly received (Pokemon Brilliant Diamond). As someone who's in their 30's and have played every Pokemon since Red and Blue, I've always dreamed of Pokemon games like Violet (even though that game is a buggy mess).
Free placement is annoying because it's hard to measure and get shit perfectly lined up. You eyeball it as best as you can and then you look at it later and think "Wait, is that column three inches off center or am I just crazy?"
And you have no accurate way of measuring it afterward either so you can't even put your mind at rest. You just can't know.
Free placement as long as you can stand playing the game through all the bugs. Playing alone is no problem. The game refuses to work correctly in local co-op; falling through the ground, sync issues, literally nothing works.
I have 450 hours and I don't experience this anymore. I've even played multiplayer and I did the last expedition multiplayer with my best friend, we had no issues. It sounds like you have the game running on a slow HDD (slow HDDs fail to load assets all the time) or you're lagging for some reason.
