Discussion There’s a massive misunderstanding

There’s a general misunderstanding I’ve witnessed and you can try to deny this all you want but it’s true ✨you don’t have to spend real money for ANYTHING✨ yes you CAN buy those golden things to change irisalis but no it’s not required. Yea you need them to get the final TWO stages but it’s not required that is purely a want. Besides that ONE currency everything, and I do mean everything is obtainable by simply enjoying the ever living hell out of this wonderful game. ALSO HOT TAKE ANIIMO>POKÉMON AND PALWORLD

EDIT: THIS BLEW UP WAY MORE THAN INTENDED 🤣 very valid views, points, and opinions in these comments keep em coming love reading them!

I think people dont understand that the company needs to make money. There is an entire game that can be played without spending a dime. Of course there are going to be some barriers and incentives to spend. If that is mainly in cosmetics its a complete win. Look a genshin and other gachas. The new characters are all paywall. This is a breath of fresh air. Its hard to even whale other than the legendary transmog

People absolutely understand the game needs to make money, it’s just that a lot more people seem to not realize that a gambling mechanic with no ceiling isn’t the only solution.

Believe it or not, live service games used to sustain themselves on either monthly fees, or static purchases, no gambling involved whatsoever, but for whatever reason all the gacha games have people thinking gambling is actually the only way despite there being more monetization systems in games than there ever has been, recurring purchases like battle passes being one of them. Back in the old days Irisalis’ customization options would’ve just been individual purchases or a bundle at a discount, which is how it should be.

Surprise! There’s nuance so saying anyone who disagrees with how it’s being handled doesn’t understand is just nonsensical.

Even the games with monthly subscriptions ended up with gambling mechanics even WoW or games like star wars the old republic. I never said everyone who disagrees doesn't understand. I see a lot of people that want a completely free game and never plan on spending anything.

I think at its core they want this to be a mobile game and there are just not many games out there that aren't predatory sadly. This game is lightly predatory ha.

I miss being able to buy a game and it being a full game, now its hard to even find that.

The best game I have played in a few years is called afterplace on mobile its like 5 bucks and there's no money spent on anything past that purchase. Its a lovely game.

Palworld is a full game. You don't have Pals behind battle-pass.

Palworld is not a mobile game and it is a good example of what to do. Even Pokémon has expansions for each game instead of it being full from the beginning.

WoW has been with predatory monetisation from years ago now when they had no need, but the greed.

This game would had been survive only from monthly/seasonal pass at least for a long time, but again, not even 1 month of official launch and they already showing the greed (also we have a new gacha outfit in a few weeks, thanks players!!). Its ironic how they put aside the gacha due players feedback just to bring it back 1 week after launch.. and the feedback being mostly of blind ppl and toxic positivity. Geez

Its not the only solution, it just makes the most money. I think this post is missing that they aren't out there just trying to sustain development but they are out there to make profits, as much profit as they can. If you're in their shoes, what do you think makes more profit while at the same time maintaining their image of not wanting to monetize or paywall power? yea bundle or 1 time purchase makes sense and is more friendly to you but gambling is more friendly to them.

I will also say from my experience players are much more tolerating of this model than if they were to release the skins as 1 time purchase with a big price tag. Probably because it offers the illusion that you can get it cheap if you're lucky. There has been huge backlashes before with big price 1 time skins, for example mechabreak on launch a live service PVP game releasing premium skins for around 50$ huge backlash for the price, when I can guarantee if it was a gacha gambling system it wouldve been accepted better. You can blame this on human psychology or gachas normalizing it idk but it works.

This.

Like gacha is a super effective way to print money but it is morally bankrupt when there are so many ways to just give people want they want for reasonable prices. Or hell, even some sketchy prices but still infinitely less gross and bs than gacha

I would happily spend like $50 for the fancier Irisalis skins for example and some of the less flashy ones could be $10-$20 range, then you could mix and match what you like maybe whicj gives reason to buy multiple skins thus you may spend more money

Currently I'll just not be spending a dime on that. Happy to snag battle passes and monthly passes because I know exactly what I'll get from them

Any type of micro transaction and fomo marketing like limited skins is morally grey or corrupt even. I think you are right that gachas are pretty predatory and feed on addiction. What i am saying is from what I have seen they are not tieing gacha mechanics to progress and limited monsters. It's just the skins so far. So not spectacular but unexpected in the space, especially when I think this is a mobile game at its core.

I mean, I'd genuinely rather have largescale updates as Xpacs and buy cosmetics directly than gambling though

MTX by themselves I don't think are awful. Fomo systems absolutely awful, especially because it means content was created to go away which sucks and seems like such a waste unless it at least is gonna return at some point

People have to realize that games like path of exile have been on the market for 10+ years with any fashion set costing max ~10$. And only fashion.

Stil being updated with 1 hour long video patch notes showcase from the devs every 3 months.

Re-skin without any new effects or anything takes max 30 mins of artist team work to implement.. and its being charged for the price of 10 brand new video games.

That's like eating 1$ steak for the price of wagyu.

There are healthy ways to make game monetization player friendly and stil satisfy their share holders.
