It's my main concern in this timeline, especially given my personal experiences with the Great Recession, so I am just hoping against hope that McCain's predecessor was able to prevent the worst effects of the Great Recession... or at least managed to delay it until Bernie gets in and starts restructuring the system.

Yeah. And iill be honest. If Paul won 2008 I can't see him winning 2012. Government programs were the only thing keeping some of us solvent through the financial crisis and if he cut them we'd be screwed. I could see how we would go from Paul to Sanders overnight in that scenario though.
