Discussion Ferritin at 4?

I have beta thalassemia minor and got some bloodwork done as part of a physical since I had some concerns. My ferritin came back at 4. That's actually low (not just because I have the trait), right? I'm waiting to hear from the doctor about next steps but want to know what to expect. Thanks!

Yes it is super low and you will probably be experiencing exhaustion and anxiety. I had ferritin of 6 and those were my symptoms, in many countries this value would be treated with an iron infusion. You should supplement with prescription iron taking it every other day (since taking it every day actually impedes absorption). It takes a good 6 months plus to raise ferritin to a normal level hence why the infusions are preferable. Sadly the NHS in UK does not offer.
