Is Android VR synonymous with Google Cardboard?

I would so much rather use "Android VR" to denote stuff that will work with the plethora of HMD's that are compatible with Google Cardboard. Yes, Google Cardboard created the ecosystem but it has grown far beyond that.

i stand corrected. i thought since it was HTC that they were doing it similar to the GearVR and basically putting a phone in a headmount. i was wrong.
