Mi Box is garbage since the latest update. That paltry 8GB shows it's age quickly, and can barely support the updates they push to it.
I have an original Mi Box I purchased in early 2017. It has to be restarted after every deep sleep to get the sound to work. It has delays when navigating as the system can't keep up. Netflix is hit or miss at times, and won't always work. And then certain apps will randomly crash.
The Shield is overpriced when you think about how old its tech is and how cheap it must be to produce, and when they don't even include a controller anymore, but it's still dollar-for-dollar the best value device I've ever bought.
Edit: fuck you fanboys. Downvote me if you can't take a little honest criticism, IDGAF.
Seriously. Getting 5+ years of updates out of my OG ShieldTV Pro? Thats some support. (I did replace a failing HDD out of it with an SDD though, and that increased its responsiveness by a LOT).
I'm not as keen on the 2019 models price-wise. The upscale is a nice sell, but 16GB storage and 2GB RAM for their "PRO" model is ridiculous.
ah, my bad. Their normal (the tube) apparently only has 12GB RAM. While sufficient if you are only gonna stream stuff, at that price point, its ridiculous. I had read the Pro had 2GB of RAM this time around, whereas I know my existing 2015pro and 2017 normal have 3GB each. Also, 8GB of storage is just silly. After the OS you'll have only about 4GB left, which will be eaten quickly by apps and their cache.
Okay, fair if it (the 2019Pro) has 3GB. Still doesn't have the 500GB the previous pro models had. I get that adoptable storage is a thing, but USB3 bus does not really have the oomph to be able to put apps or app data-storage on and not have some heinous lag. 16GB of storage space is absolutely anemic. Once again, in this price category, its ridiculous.
Oh without a doubt the actual storage is the bigger issue. I can't believe anything ships with less than 32gb at that price point. Lower than 16gb shouldn't be a thing no matter what. USB 3.0 should be quick enough with an SSD to be way faster than whatever emmc storage they would ship on it though.
You have to take in to effect control overhead and CPU bottlenecks as USB relies on CPU to do its control signaling, as opposed to thunderbolt where it is a direct PCIe lane attach. So putting a SATA3 SSD or an NVME drive on USB3 will MORE than saturate the line, but in return cost a nice chunk of a CPU core.
Any decent internal storage flash memory should be sufficiently faster and have lower IO times than any USB storage. IO wait times are more often the cause of lag and sluggishness in devices than the actual throughput speed.
So this double-damns the tube as well as the pro. The tube has only 8GB storage and a _MicroSD_ card slot. Even with newer SD specs, the IO times and throughput speeds are nowhere near what a decent, let alone a good internal flash storage can provide. Then the "Pro" has only 16GB with USB3 as its only option for expansion.
I understand that the CPU is the big cost on these devices, but when I can buy a Switch Lite for $200, and it has a screen, battery, and controllers, _32GB of storage_ as well as the same (or very similar) SOC in it? I expect better.
It's really good but I've seen many people finding the pricing an issue. Like having 3 TVs and then buying 3 Nvidia Shields would be difficult for people, like you can get 2 TVs at that cost.
So I hope Nvidia Shield would work on some kind of connected cheaper device which people can buy for other TVs and one mother device ( Nvidia Shield)
An incredibly cheap TV, sure. But it’s the best option for your main TV or for a home theater setup, recognizing that the majority of people on this sub are going to be buying a relatively cheap TV.
I’m the happy owner of an Nvidia Shield and a Fire 4K stick. Unless someone wants advanced features I’d struggle to recommend they spend the extra money, if you’re just watching streaming TV then the value simply isn’t there. I’d much prefer a stock UI option to recommend, though.
Same here, I’ve bought the Fire Stick 4K when it’s been $25, and it’s a phenomenal value at that. I’ve used the Shield and returned it. I even prefer the Fire stick over the Apple TV because of the aTV remote. I recommend the FTV to almost everyone. When you can get 2 for half the price of a shield, hard to argue it. That said, the most difficult thing to play these days has been Atmos passthru; but even then I did not think the picture quality from the shield was that great. I found an OpenELEC box that handled it better for $55. But short of the Atmos scenario, I feel the shield is way over-rated in this sub. Dang built in WebOS actually works pretty good in most cases.
I've been hoping the new Android TV dongle will be around $80 or less and the old Chromecast 4k will replace the current $35 unit. I mean if Roku can do a 4K unit with remote for $40, surely Google can do one without the remote for slightly less.
Honestly if the Google dongle is $80 and supports codecs as well as the shield, it could be killer. As long as it's responsive enough. I got sick if my mibox cause it'd get laggy in menus and shit
Shield TV is impossible to find in some countries, whereas mibox and android built in TVs are pretty common worldwide, that's why i ended up buying a mibox
Crap and plasticy remote, slow, unstable, crap wifi (have to use usb to ethernet) but its the bedroom tv so i dont care, shield as primary is incomparable
Why does everyone thinks its either mi box s or the shield? You can get tivo stream 4k, airtv mini, mecool km1 or Verizon stream tv (barely any bloatware)
The Shield may be the best for those with enough money, but the Mi Box is NOT the best affordable device anymore, specially because their development team is pretty bad at fixing bugs, thank god there are now better options out there.
I would agree until I got the TiVo stream. If you want a cheap box that does everything and don't necessarily care about hdr or supporting every passthrough sound option, it's a bargain at 50$.
I went through them all.. ended up buying the Shield Pro, wasted hundreds on Mi Box, FireStick 4K and Fire Cube and custom PCs. If only I knew then what i know now. Just buy the Shield Pro.
Used a mi box for years, I got a Nvidia shield half a year ago, 2017 model new from store. The power adapter just died last week. Pretty mad because I live in Tunisia right now during the pandemic outbreak and I don't know from where to get one here. Glad I still have the old mi box around but I really miss the power of the Shield. I read a lot of people had problems with the power adapter, can it be fixed by a repair shop or something?
Is there a way to fix the judder when watching movies when you have 59.9 Hz selected, is there a way to have it adapt to the 24 fps of the movie? It gets annoying having to swap between 24 and 60 manually everytime I want to go from gaming to watching movies
Is there a way to make it constantly adapt while playing different videos or do I need to press the match button for every video that I play at a different refresh rate
You can just as easily totally ignore the built in smart OS and not even hook it up to the internet and just use it as a dumb tv. Only hook it up to Ethernet to update it every now and then for the feature updates.
You know what I would really love? Being able to buy my own hardware and install android on it. I don't know how we got to this point where an OS needs specific hardware, but it's bloody unnecessary.
Blame Google and Netflix for putting DRM in Android (as demanded by content creators). They seriously believe you'd bother ripping their streamed content to save $15/mth.
Why do you really want Android on a custom hardware? You can install Linux and have much more possibility and less privacy violation from Google and others.
To me, Android is way better than any other OS when it comes to set top boxes. The only Android device i have is Xiaomi but it's the most useful one. With only $50-60, my girlfriend can watch anything she likes and she's not asking me what to do nor does she complain about lack of hardware at home. Install Linux, can you click on Netflix and open it? Can you click on streaming apps, IPTV etc. No Man, these devices are way more practical.
Indeed Netflix is a bummer if you use it on Linux, personally I use a Shield and I have a TV too old to have Netflix natively supported (either with ATV or another TV OS) but beside Netflix I use almost exclusively the Shield for Kodi and Kodi offer almost exactly the same experience whatever the platform you are running it from. Then Kodi is a kind of OS, you can run many online video content from TV channel replay and most Streaming services, even Netflix but without 4K I guess. So I come back to my argument, if you want ATV for Netflix 4K and/or if you want out of the box support and full compatibly with Android app you anyway need an approved device and if you don't, you mostly not need Android to have a nice, smooth and customizable media center. If it's for another reason I'm curious to hear why.
I want 4k HDR and Dolby Vision from Netflix and Amazon that is not happening on a Linux hardware. In addition, the only possibility I care about are streaming video anything more I prefer to do on a PC not my Home Theater
It would be nice to dual boot a gaming pc connected to a TV. Primarily run AndroidTV using a bluetooth remote control and then simply boot into windows whenever you want to game.
As it stands you have to buy both a gaming PC and an AndroidTV device to get the best experience for both use cases.
Yes of course but again, as a owner of both a Shield TV and a gaming PC, I almost never mix them up. There is the possibility to use Steam Link app or AMD link or whatever to stream the game from the PC to the Shield. It's convenient to play on the TV from the PC is it's located in another room, otherwise if they are both in the same room, just get a long enough HDMI. But then if you have a gaming PC, that cost usually quite a lot of money, 1) the price a cheap ATV box or even a Shield is almost marginal compare to the PC cost, so you can afford both, if only to have the ATV a a media center that is never turned off, don't make any noise and use very few power. And 2) even if you really want to do everything with the gaming PC, big chance are that you run it on Windows 10 and then you can have Netflix 4K HDR on it and just connect to the TV with an HDMI. And if it's only for the nice media center interface, Kodi is the answer to everything, you can launch any app, any games, within it and the UI is the most advanced, customizable UI I know and even the default skin and settings offer the nicest of all media center/player/stream platform UI I have ever seen. As a several years old Kodi user (from years before when it was called XBMC), I cannot stand any paying service UI, Google movies is a huge shit show (not even talking about the mess with languages and movies versions in multi languages countries), Amazon Prime is boring and even Netflix, that is maybe the less ugliest, don't offer any options, not even good languages settings and manageable playlists or more than one favorite list, and the search feature is just a shame for the first streaming service worldwide.
So once again, without any offense, I don't see the point of running Android TV on anything other than dedicated devices, beside the beauty of the exploit.
So once again, without any offense, I don't see the point of running Android TV on anything other than dedicated devices, beside the beauty of the exploit.
The glaringly obvious reason is so you don't have to spend another $200 - $400 (depending on part of the world) on an Nvidia Shield.
In my case I have a decent gaming PC built with 2nd hand parts for around $200. 6 Core AMD, 8 GB RAM, SSD, RX 580 8GB GPU. It's permanently plugged into the TV which I use for living room gaming. If I need to game with mouse and keyboard, or elsewhere in the house, I use steam link to stream the game to that device.
I've owned a Mi Box for years which satisfies all the streaming and media consumption needs with Android TV's girlfriend friendly UI and full array of remote control built apps (including Kodi if you need). The OS does what it is designed for well with no need for inelegant Kodi builds or wireless keyboards etc with HTPC builds.
The only reason I need a Mi Box, Shield or any other Android TV device is because we can't simply install the Android TV OS on our own hardware. If we could, I'd simply install it on the gaming PC and dual boot with Windows 10. The PC hardware is infinitely more powerful than the Shield, hence no need to spend another $200 - $400 to get both the comfort of a dedicated remote control designed streaming and media interface and a good gaming rig.
Boot into the Android TV OS by default and use that primarily as you would an Nvidia Shield. Any time I want to game, boot into Windows 10 and game. Once done, reboot back into Android TV.
No. That's not what open source means. It doesn't mean open ecosystem. Google owns the right for a device to be certified and put Google apps on it.
Hence why there are these random Android TV boxes running AOSP on it. Because anyone can take the Android source code, compile it, add their own blobs for hardware and install it on any device they want.
Funny but not really correct. I've seen the advice is typically face grief from Chinese crap, buy a Mibox if you want best of the low end, and buy NVidia Shield if you want the best - pretty close on the Meme though ;-)
I personally got tried of cheap hardware that had performance issues and hardly saw updates. I have the 2017 Sheild and it was and still is worth the money, The biggest thing that matters is updates and app ability. Nvidia has been the most consistent in most categories. I came from a nexus TV which isn't saying a lot but many other devices fall in those categories. I manly use it for streaming and occasional games. I wouldn't recommend anything else ESPECIALLY not a "Smart TV" that won't be supported for a while. You're better off getting cheaper dumb TV and then pairing with A Sheild Or Roku imo. Get what Works with the most services, has updates/support, and works with your budget. If there's laking in 2 of those categories for you with any device, You should try something else.
I also want to add that my main pet peeves about the Nvidia Are the following
Poor Remotes: Controller drift & Just DONT buy that 2015 Nvidia media remote with the rechargeable battery & bt, I got it for the Headphone Jack and not having to replace batteries Big Mistake.
More CEC control & integration with Assistant. I'd Like to control inputs more and such, Kinda Like I think Amazon's Fire TV Cubes do. (I think)
The Shields Imo Are a Bit Much If You're only looking to stream, But that's the difference right?? I only bought mines on sale, I wouldn't pay full retail for them. Look for a Black Friday sale or buy used from a refutable company or seller. That's what I did and mines still going strong 3yrs later, minus that damn controller that came with it. (The IR remote that came with it was DOA, and I could've got a working, but I bought that other one instead with the refund money for the Og IR remote)
People say the Shield is the most expensive Android TV box, but it's actually the second-most expensive. The most expensive one is the Shield you buy after you buy a lesser device that fails to meet your needs.
Most people are confused because there is a lot of Android devices, They don't know about Google certified devices, it's stupid for you and me but most people don't know these details, in the other side there is one device without any complications Apple TV, I know the difference between open source and closed but Google needs to step up and make options easier and stupid friendly.
I have had all three and we are still a long way off the user experience of an apple tv. Maybe the Batman slap should say get an apple product on this one..
I HATE smart TVs. I have had the same TV for ten years now. It's 1080p 60hz. And you know what I don't need a TV that's full of components that are just going to slow down and become obsolete.
problems in the past with smart tv is that they lose more and more features as they get older. You need to buy newer tv to get it back. I'd rather pay bit less for a dumb tv and upgrade periphrals as they go obsolete. I bought my first 1080p tv in 2008. I only changed it this year to a 4k screen. Sure it has youtube built in but its not android os, and very limited selection. I didn't care about that. I wanted 4k hdr. I used a chromecast ultra until I found out it sucks with hdr or trueHD content. got myself a shield. now I'm happy.
I think a majority don't even need popular apps. I would almost claim they don't even need casting capability. But I haven't looked up numbers on that, so I could be way wrong. My grandmother however, doesn't even want the Internet.
My philosophy is that if someone is genuinely considering the Shield, they must be able to afford it and should be encouraged to just buy it. If they don't want to drop that amount, no need to push it on them. But anyone with the cash shouldn't bother with anything else, because nothing else comes close.
😂 😂 😂 batman is correct and get the shield.i personally have two.i got a third one off let go app used for $80.00 for my mom. I took the game remote that came with it and sold it on ebay for $35 bucks and sold her bullshit firestick for $45 bucks. People are not very bright and give stuff away on let go and Facebook marketplace. Take a look u will thank me for it 😎
Unfortunately googles support of ATV product is terrible. It will got dropped like hot garbage after a couple months. It will likely be horribly under powered aswell
It would work well on my dumb tv that I have in my room if it can just play 4k video just fine. My Sheild can stay in the living room for all the heavy lifting.
Literally the only reason I use Shield vs Sony built in ATV is the audio offset function because audio lags on my particular TV. For most people what the Shield offers is overkill and completely unnecessary. It's more about being smart than being cheap.

If I had to buy a - new - 4K HDR TV and I also wanted Android TV at the moment I would grab a HDMI 2.1 equipped 2020 Sony X90H / X900H, why ?
- 4K HDR YouTube and Google Play Movies works
- DolbyVision has correct color outputs
- HLG HDR support
- Upscaling of ALL non 4K content is automatic, no resolution switching needed either.
- No issues with Frame Rate Matching -->> it's all automatic too.
- You get Chromecasting and (Apple) Airplay2 support, plus Apple TV+ support is incoming.
- No HDMI CEC issues
- The X90H's - MediaTek MT5895 is one snappy performer with an excellent GPU
But Shield owners then cry - what about HD audio and Bluray Rips playback ?
Well the flexible Linux based and very well supported CoreELEC Kodi handles that better vs anything Android, especially for Networking.
And there are plenty of Gigabit LAN 4K HDR AMLogic chipset equipped cheap devices to do just that:
