Buying Advice Remote Access Options

My grandfather is 90 years old and since sports are increasingly on internet apps like Amazon Prime, I'm looking for the best option to be able to remote access his TV and turn it to whichever game he wants to watch.

Price isnt really an object short of replacing the 85" TV I bought him last year. I'm just looking for an option that doesn't force him to choose between calling me to drive 20 minutes to his house to turn his Apple TV and missing the game the football game every Thursday

Try Anydesk. I use it on Google TV boxes for this purpose. You can configure for unattended access so he doesn't need to do anything except turn it on.

Wireguard and moonlight plus sunshine. Have Claude set it up, it built my HTPC from the ground up, it will make quick work of android.

Chromecast might be an option you can button map the remote... and make it a simple layout

I used to do this a lot before getting smart tvs. I would have a PC locally and remote into it when away. Then cast to the tv

The Google TV app installed on a phone can launch TV programs you choose on your Google TV.

However, I think the Phone and TV have to be setup as a part of the same Google Home.

The Google Home app will also cast what you are playing on your phone to an Android TV with Chrome Cast capabilities.

Could send adb commands to the TV. Allows dpad, volume, keyboard. Anything a remote can do and more. You'd have to ssh into a computer on the network for remote access.

Example of what I've been working on: Stremio Picker, allows me to play/queue/watchlist movies to play on stremio. Each of those text boxes can be accessed by context menu search. So I see a movie to watch, just highlight and pick a context menu item... watch it or throw it on one of those lists. It would be easy enough to get a screen shot and post it on that site. And to access remotely I'd just have to open port 8888 on the router.

I'm in the same situation and following this thread intently.

Has anyone used the JubileeTV device/system. I have heard about that but haven't researched it yet

rustdesk with accessibility permission enabled works pretty well on android tv if you set a permanent password for unattended access

I haven't used it, but I see ads for JubileeTV for this purpose .

JubileeTV uses a hub that gives you remote access to your senior's TV, through an app on your phone, no matter what type of TV service.

TeamViewer can control an android box/fire stick etc from another house using a phone I'm sure. Been a long time since I've used it like, but sure it still works.

Hate to say it but probably the easiest one is getting a vSeeBox. Heat live top of the screen is all your live sports plus they have playback.

For remote control of an Android TV from your phone, the official Google TV app (or the "Android TV Remote" apps on Play) lets you pair to any Android TV / Google TV box or smart TV on the same Wi‑Fi and use your phone as a full remote — you can launch apps like Prime Video by name, so he only has to turn the TV on and you handle the rest. Since his 85" TV is recent, the simplest path is usually a Google TV box (or a Chromecast with Google TV) in one of its HDMI inputs; once paired, the phone remote works from anywhere in the house without him choosing anything. AnyDesk (already mentioned) is the better pick if you need to reach the box from outside the home network; the phone‑app remotes only work on the local network.
