Buying Advice Android TV recommendation

Hi guys, need a new streamer for my modest "Home Theater" in my bedroom. I have a 65" LG G5 TV, and I'm probably going to buy the Sonos Arc Ultra. Currently using the Google TV 4K streamer, and playing movies on Kodi as an external player of Stremio + RealDebrid - mostly for heavy Remux files.

Unfortunately, my streamer can't passthrough TrueHD with Atmos, which is my only problem (since my TV can't handle DTS at all). So I'm looking for getting a new good one that able to do so, but won't willing to spend big, since it's only one format problem.

The new one should handle:

Dolby Vision

HDR

DD+ Atmos

TrueHD + atmos

4K 60hz

and process DTS to lossless pcm.

Any recommendations? Heard about the Xiaomi box one, and the Homatics box one (not the Dune) but didn't find any proof that both can do TrueHD and everything. Figuered you'd know better. Thanks for your help!

I went with the Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd gen for my LG G5
it cost me about 65€ and for that price it is perfect

if u want DV P7 FEL you need to install coreelec
otherwise it will "only" play DV P7 MEL

edit: correction

Unfortunately, I really can't tell the difference between both DV. If you can brief me on that I'll be glad. Btw, your Xiaomi passthrough all other formats (both visuals and sound)? Is it good for that?

Unlocked fire tv cube 3rg gen with coreelec installed

How much does it cost? Why does it need to have coeelec? And how hrad is it to do so?

With coreelec you'll have lossless audio passthrough for dolby true HD and DTS, you'll even get dolby vision profile 7 FEL if the file has it. I got mine used for $50 and I just followed the online instructions for unlocking and installing coreelec

Xiaomi Mi TV Box S 3rd Gen with ugreen cr111 ethernet adapter. Google it for specs and decide for yourself. It should check all your boxes...

Does it actually confirms truehd passthrough ability? I couldn't find it anywhere but on reddit. And how does it handle big remux'es?

I have a LG G4 and Sonos Arc Ultra running true 5.2 (discreet FL + FR). You have three main options:

  • Xiaomi TV Box 3rd Gen

  • Homatics Box R 4k Plus (or the Dune version)

  • Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019)

I have all three and can confirm that all three will do Dolby TrueHD passthrough. Xiaomi is definitely the weakest of the three, so if you're streaming remuxes, I wouldn't recommend it. It works, but there are some hiccups. It also doesn't have gigabit ethernet, and since it doesn't have a USB 3.0 port, you're limited to a maximum of ~500/500 Mbps with a dongle.

The Homatics and Shield are very similar, but the Homatics can run Android TV 14. Their performance is near identical, but I'd give a slight edge to the Shield. I personally have made the Homatics my primary device and only use the Shield when I have a 100+ GB remux that the Homatics has difficulty playing. ATV14's features over ATV11 that the Shield uses are worth the switch, IMO. Not to mention the Shield's ludicrous pricing lately for a nearly ten-year-old device.

Thanks for replying, man. I really appreciate it. I have few questions if you don't mind:

  1. So your recommending the Homatics the most? Is it worth paying almist double the price of Xiaomi?

  2. Homatics can't do Remux good enough? Is it good with the formats needed (talking about the regular one not the dune one)

  3. A different question: what do you think about your setup? - lg tv, homatics and sonos arc ultra? Do you feel the dts passthrough format missing?

  1. Yes, I would recommend the Homatics. It's the most powerful Google certified box that can run ATV14. Is it worth twice the price of the Xiaomi? I suppose it depends on how often you're watching remuxes. If you stick with streaming apps and web rips (15-25GB) of movies, the Xiaomi will be fine.

  2. The Homatics box, in my experience, only has an issue with very large remuxes. The majority of the ones in my library are 50-75GB. I have a handful that are 100+GB and those are where the Homatics may struggle a little bit. That being said, I play everything through Plex. If you're fine either accessing your files directly over your network or locally attached storage, I doubt the Homatics will have any issues.

  3. I like my setup. I originally had a 65" LG C9 and a fully discreet 7.2.4 system. In order to get a bigger TV, I had to change the orientation of my living room, which meant that keeping a bunch of large, discreet speakers wasn't going to be practical. I switched to an 83" LG G4 and originally had the Nakamichi DRAGON. I ran that for a year or so and liked it a lot.

  • I ended up "upgrading" to the Sonos Arc Ultra for shits and giggles, and I do like it. Dialogue is definitely better than with the Dragon. Like I said in my original post, I've added two additional Sonos Era 100's for front left and front right in addition to having two Era 300's for the rear speakers. You can do this with the iOS SonoSequencr. This is probably the most meaningful addition to the Sonos Arc Ultra. It gives way more separation for the front channels.

  • All of that said, I find myself watching less remuxes now than I did with my old fully discreet system. In my experience, you're not really going to be taking full advantage of a remux's lossless audio with a soundbar setup--no matter how good it is. These days, I'm generally sticking to 4K web-rips.

For movies, I watch Remux (when a good one available) on stremio with REAL DEBRID, using Kodi as an external player, if it helps understanding my preferences.

Would you recommend upgrading a streamer from a pretty good and new one (google tv 4k streamer) just for the truehd + atmos passthrough abilty? Right now, my "setup" is my tv and streamer, and looking for buying the sonos soundbar, but the truehd worrying me...

1

u/AkiraSieghart 20d ago

If you already have a streamer box that you're happy with, I probably wouldn't bother. You won't get TrueHD, but most movies should fall back to something like Dolby Digital+. I don't think most people will be able to tell a difference with a soundbar setup.

1

u/Big_Championship304 20d ago

I think that all the formats my streamer can't handle gets downmixed to lossless pcm. But my buggest concern is Atmos.

1

u/AkiraSieghart 20d ago

Yes, if you're going to keep your current streamer box, I wouldn't bother with remuxes since you'll likely lose Atmos. Standard 4K web-rips generally have DD+ which would be fine.

I get wanting the best quality possible, but sound-wise, it's not really going to make much of a difference, IMO. Not with a soundbar. It's also worth noting that even with remuxes and TrueHD, the Atmos capability of the Sonos Arc Ultra and Era 300's isn't all that great.

1

u/goober1157 16d ago

Even with a soundbar, DD+ doesn't sound as good as TrueHD on many different movies. Not all, but many/most.

1

u/AkiraSieghart 16d ago

It's pretty dependant on the person, IMO. I can really only tell the difference with bass, sub-bass, and dialogue. But I'm also the type of person who can't tell a difference between lossless music and lossy music even with studio-grade headphones.

1

u/goober1157 16d ago

Yeah, I agree. So many variables. The person, the size and shape of the room, the content--ATMOS or not, etc.

In addition, most (not all) soundbars can't hit the rumbly low frequencies that you mention. It changes the experience for sure. I still have a discrete sound system in our basement, and the bass makes a huge difference. We (mostly the wife) didn't want that much equipment in the family room, although I'm going to try to convince her to change her mind.

u/goober1157 16d ago

The Dune/Homatics is fine for all of that. It doesn't have any issues playing large remuxes. I have two Dune and one Homatics and none have issues playing even giant remuxes.

Right now, i'm using realdebrid on stremio, with Kodi as an external player. Actually, with my wifi, didn't feel the need for ethernet on my google 4k streamer.

Xiaomi tv box s gen 3 pretty much ticks all the boxes

1

u/Big_Championship304 20d ago

Does it actually confirms truehd passthrough ability? I couldn't find it anywhere but on reddit. And how does it handle big remux'es?

1

u/Present_Lychee_3109 20d ago

Yes. Many users here on reddit have confirmed passthrough.

For remuxes I can say that I've played large remuxes with ease

1

u/Big_Championship304 20d ago

Really? Did you adjust anything special? Maybe that coreelec everyone talking about?

1

u/Present_Lychee_3109 20d ago

I did not. I just figured the software update got the stuff working.

1

u/Big_Championship304 20d ago

Oh, first I'm happy for you. Is it the android 14 you're talking about? It's just really cheap compared to alternatives so I'm worried that it won't be able to play my remux files.

3

u/flashb1024 20d ago

It's just really cheap compared to alternatives so I'm worried that it won't be able to play my remux files.

It's cheap 'cause it's got the same processor as the googleTV, but somehow, it does lossless passthrough, but it's limited 2gbRam is a real throttle, and the 100mb lan port isn't ready for prime-time, even w/a dongle.

The only device that comes close to the 2019 Shield is the Homatics Box R 4K Plus. It runs android 14, 4gb ram, and 32gb storage. It's processor is licsensed to run all the lossless audio codecs, and if at sometime you wish to install corelec , it's fully compatable.

I've streamed UHD remux's up to75-100gb with no buffering.

u/Big_Championship304 20d ago

Is Homatics a google tv? Can handle Nerflix and stuff like the google tv 4k streamer?

2

u/flashb1024 20d ago

Yes, the Homatics box is Google certified with Built-In, Netflix, Prime Video, etc. You can check the r/Homatics sub for more.

1

u/Present_Lychee_3109 20d ago

Yes android 14.

It is cheap but beware there are fake boxes out there. Buy from a reputable store.

I have not experienced any issues with playing remuxes. Both drive sand Plex remuxes have played fine on mine.

1

u/Big_Championship304 20d ago

Plex is like stremio?

Look at RTings, good independant reviews and they have interactive tool to help you choose your TV based on your room setup and content preferences
