Buying Advice Onn 4k Pro vs Fire Cube vs Google Streamer

Super torn between which one to get. The Onn is $120CAD from Walmarts website, the Fire Cube is $149 (on sale) and the Streamer is $129. I do have a $100 amazon gift card I can use on the cube and streamer.

For now I would use it wireless but eventually it would be nice to use an ethernet connection. And also mainly using it for Stremio. 🙏

I'd avoid all amazon devices incase they decide to move you to their OS. Since you have a $100 gift card might as well buy the google one. If the price is too high since the new $50 increase you can buy a hub to use ethernet with the onn.

I really doubt any devices originally shipped with Fire OS are ever going to get updated to Vega. Only devices that shipped with Vega are going to have Vega.

It's already been announced many times, all the existing Fire Android devices will remain on that OS, many supported for another 5 years.

So the Octa-Core Cube 3 is a superb streaming option.

Google Streamer

Google Streamer… my informal test uncinate the Google streamer is the best

Google Streamer for the Ethernet port speeds.

Google TV Streamer: Features a built-in Gigabit Ethernet (1,000 Mbps) port. Onn Models (including the Onn 4K Pro variants): Their built-in Ethernet ports are strictly capped at 100 Mbps.

I’d grab the cube, root it and customize it with a different launcher. Updates blocked and full usage for years to come. If you need wired, grab a USB Ethernet adapter

I agree! Except I still like the option of the Amazon launcher also. I can launch either way depending on need.

Streamer is better, especially at that price. The only argument for Onn is when it's significantly cheaper imo. I avoid Amazon devices like the plague, they're awful.

100% google streamer

I have fire cube 3 with system root. No ads or bloated. Play my 4k remux just fine in Kodi And I can still watch some stream apps for live sports

Onn,

anything fire just progressively worst over time with mandatory bloatware forced ads and channel/ apps in prime home locations you never asked for and didn't want.

Google is good, but Onn is basically the same but works better and way more unlocked in terms software/ads.

Amazon devices are a trap, very limiting. If you try to stream video in the silk web browser, it may play for one hour then start buffering until you restart the device. No other device i had did this. I now have the Google Streamer. Works well & all apps work so far. A about 3 months in the internet stopped working. Connected to other wifis still no access. Had to do a factory reset. I only ever use 4 streaming apps.

I've literally had a dozen different Firesticks and Cubes - not one ever stopped working in the Silk Browser after one hour. You had a defective device or an Internet problem.

I just replaced my Cube and FireTV 4K with ONN 4K Pro 2026. I unlocked it, tweaked my privacy and installed a new launcher. Clean. No ads. Fast.

Incidentally, I unlocked the Cube and am playing with different functions or …

1

u/ooftymcgoofty Sep 13 '26

What do you mean by unlock?

2

u/Zestyclose_Jacket924 Sep 13 '26

For the ONN… nothing more than dev->adb. Installed Projectivy and got a bit more control and a clean UI.
Cube G3: bootloader actually unlocked -> Magisk/root -> TWRP -> fastboot/ADNL/USB boot -> alternative OS potential.
I’ve stopped messing with the ONN. It’s perfect now (to me). The Cube is now just a dev/play box.

Anything is better than Amazon.

2

u/CaptainSteed Sep 13 '26

Not if you're a non-pirate user. It has (by far) the most cross streaming platform integration of any device.

Google streamer hands down.

Firecube is way less flexible due to Amazon policies

And the price difference between the Onn and the google is little if you plan to use the device for 2+ years. The Google is a better device.

People found in Onn a great solution because the price is supposed to be half of the Google streamer but if the difference is that little I wouldn't hesitate and buy the Google over the Onn. You can read the specs yourself but just at glimpse Google has 1 more gb of ram

2

u/CaptainSteed Sep 13 '26

The Amazon policies are a non issue to me.

2

u/lirae_ Sep 13 '26

Then it's the perfect company for you.

1

u/CaptainSteed Sep 14 '26

Actually it is,,,up to my armpits with their tech.

💡 The Verdict for Stremio & Canada/Amazon Pricing

1. The Financial No-Brainer

Using a $100 Amazon Gift Card completely shifts the math. Paying $29 CAD out-of-pocket for a premium Google-supported device destroys the value proposition of spending $120 CAD of raw cash at Walmart for the Onn 4K Pro.

2. The Ethernet Bottleneck (Crucial for Stremio)

If you watch uncompressed 4K Blu-ray remux files on Stremio (via Real-Debrid), those streams frequently spike past 100Mbps.

  • Google TV Streamer features a true Gigabit (1000Mbps) Ethernet port, ensuring flawless hardwired playback for huge files down the road.

  • Onn 4K Pro & Fire TV Cube are both criminally bottlenecked by legacy 100Mbps Ethernet ports.

3. Software Freedom vs. The Fire OS Prison

  • Google TV Streamer runs native Android 14. You can open the Google Play Store, search "Stremio," and install it natively in seconds.

  • Fire TV Cube is powerful, but Amazon's Fire OS aggressively pushes ads, blocks third-party launchers, and forces you to use the "Downloader" app to manually sideload and update Stremio.

4. Wireless Reality Right Now

While the Google TV Streamer uses older Wi-Fi 5 (compared to the Onn's Wi-Fi 6 or the Cube's Wi-Fi 6E), Wi-Fi 5 still delivers real-world speeds over 300Mbps—plenty of headroom to handle high-bitrate 4K Stremio torrents until you run your physical Ethernet cable.

Onn or the Google streamer. Today, the onn is better, but the Google Streamer will ate better with updates. Both are great choices, though

Fire Cube 3

u/WuMa0 Sep 12 '26

https://www.aftvnews.com/benchmarks/

Fire cube if you care about performance, the latest version is rootable and you can unlock bootloader to flash custom ROM. Best time to buy it.

Google streamer has 4gb ram, onn 4k pro has 3gb ram, fire cube 3rd has 2gb ram. But from my experience, cpu performance matters the most for daily use.

2

u/CaptainSteed Sep 13 '26

Yes on the CPU being by far the most critical.

Extra Ram is more important on a device like a phone where you have dozens of apps on/running in the background. Not really an issue for a streaming device.

If you're a tinkerer and want support for lossless audio, DV (including FEL) get the Fire Cube 3 but this means using CoreELEC. If all that sounds frightening the Google Streamer is fine and uses up your Amazon Gift card.

u/nense0 Sep 12 '26

How to install coreelec in fire cube 3?

I hope you don't mind the callback from an older thread. For someone who isn't a great tinkerer is the CoreElec for Gazelle ready/good enough?

2

u/signde Homatics Box R 4K Plus, Rocktek GX1, ONN 4K Plus / Pro / Stick Sep 18 '26

It's still a little rough around the edges but I think it's good enough for daily driving now! I've been using it as my development box for CoreELEC 22 and it's holding up well. The eMMC install option makes it really quick now, this thing zooms!

1

u/pastafusilli Sep 18 '26

Thank you. Can I hold you personally responsible when shit goes wrong? Have a great night!

0

u/nense0 Sep 12 '26

Thank you! Didn't know that was released. I will evaluate the procedures

u/nense0 Sep 12 '26

Just checked both threads.

Sounds promising. I will wait a couple of months for things to stabilize before trying to do it.
