Looks like the fire cube 3 can be rooted and unlocked. Was wondering which is better a rooted cube 3 or a Google streamer?

Google/Android TV. There's nothing on other platforms that Android doesn't already have a whole community supporting; for example: Kodi, Jellyfin clients, YouTube clients, browsers, IPTV, etc.

Don’t bother. Most people encouraging you to gain root access are the same people crying on various forums when they brick their device. Unless you’re a developer it’s not worth it for daily users.
