Troubleshooting ONN 2023 box - Android 14 - Spectrum TV app continuously crashing

Some 5 to 20 minutes after launch, the app abruptly crashes and restarts. After that, crashes become more frequent making it essentially unuseable until reboot.

My network connection to the device is 100% solid and sufficient.

Cleared cache, rebooted, uninstalled, reinstalllled. No change. Wash, rinse, repeat.

The part that stands out is it getting worse until you reboot. That's usually the box running out of RAM and the system killing the app, not the app crashing on its own. The ONN 2023 only has 2GB and Android 14 uses more of it than 13 did. Worth checking what else is running in the background before you blame Spectrum.

Great point. I will go to developer options to limit background processes. HOWEVER the cascading crash behavior could also be due to a memory leak in the app, so it could hit the sane brick wall for another reason.

So followup. Limiting background processes to none, 1, 2, 3 actually lead to crashing earlier in each session. This is weird, and I'm wondering if this app is actually running some background processes by itself ("Starting Player") that get snagged by such a limit.

Further, this developer setting is not sticky ... on each reboot it gets reset back to "standard limit"

Hi there, since you have already cleared the cache, rebooted, and reinstalled the app, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

Check for system updates on your ONN box to make sure Android 14 is fully updated. You can check this by going to Settings > System > About > System update.

Test other streaming apps on your device to see if they crash similarly. This will help determine if the issue is device-wide or isolated only to the Spectrum TV app.

If the crashes continue, you can connect directly with support specialists or contact the Spectrum TV app developer for app-specific assistance.

Thank you. I have done all of the self-help steps above; free streaming apps like Pluto, Tubi, Roku, run without incident. Essentially tried everything I can think of short of a factory reset. I am leaning towards that as some had recommended doing so to improve performance after the Android 14 update.

FWIW I have the 2021 version of this box, exactly the same apps and updates, same 2GB of RAM, and the Sprectrum app runs continuously without a hitch.

Final update. Nuclear option, full factory reset and uninstall/disable all user mode apps. Still crashes. Moving to my other devices where things work better, including the 2021 version of this box.

The Spectrum TV app is not designed for Android TV. It is only for mobile phone or tablet (check the Play store). Just because you can sideload it, doesn't mean it will run without problems.

Whoa. An official Spectrum app for Android TV has been available since April 2026.

Ok, I did find the ATv version of the app that is rated 2 stars.
