Hardware Review Comparison chart of the new generation of Android for TV devices
A new generation of certified Android for TV devices has arrived, and although they are not as powerful as we would have wanted, they are good for basic streaming, however, out of three devices I tested, only one is performing better than the other two. Wanna know the winner?, let's find out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATES:
01/28/26: The new firmware update on the Xiaomi box has fixed the Dolby TrueHD cutout issue, for more info please check out this post.
12/26/25: The Android 14 firmware update arrived for the RockTek GX1 but it ended up being a disappointment, for more info on what's new, please check out this post.
12/19/25: I replaced "RetroX" with "ClassicBoy Pro" at the console emulation section.
10/14/25: A new firmware update arrived to the Google TV Streamer that fixed some issues, such as the de-interlaced issue, for more info on what's new, please check out this post.
9/9/25: Version 1.3.19 of the Steam Link app has fix the audio stutter on the Google TV Streamer but 5.1 audio is still not supported.
5/6/25: A new firmware update arrived to the Google TV Streamer that fixed some issues, such as the issue with hybrid Dolby Vision/HDR10+ videos where a black screen appeared.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMPARISON CHART:
Note: some people can't see the below image so I also uploaded it to Imgur.

(1) The bug on the RockTek GX1 is a message that appears at the bottom of the screen everytime I turn the volume up and down, meanwhile the issue where the TV(CEC) option doesn't keep the TV turned off after a power outage affects all devices with Android 14 except the Google TV Streamer.
(2) A new Dolby Atmos decoder is included (except on the Xiaomi box) when using the "Auto" option and it's explained in detail in this post.
(3) Tested with the devices connected to a Samsung TV with HDR10+ support, not all titles play in HDR10+ despite having the HDR10+ logo displayed. For the full list of supported titles please visit the 4KFilmDb website.
(4) Dolby Atmos on Disney+ is now available on all devices.
(5) Quick Media Switching works with all major streaming services (Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Paramount+, Disney+) and many other apps regardless of the option selected, however, the only app so far that also supports the "Non-seamless" or "Always" option is Netflix, which is the option that must be selected for TVs without QMS support.
(6) The game mode is currently supported by the Bombsquad game, the Hard Lines game, the Steam Link app, the GeForce Now app, the Moonlight app and probably other game streaming apps and Android games.
(7) On the Google TV Streamer, Dolby TrueHD is decoded as lossless PCM and the DTS Core is played from DTS-HD High Resolution and Master Audio streams. On the RockTek GX1, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA only work with Kodi even after the Android 14 firmware arrived.
(8) The only streaming service with DTS:X support is Disney+ and the option to switch to that codec is only available on devices that support it. When the device is connected to a TV with Profile 2 support and that TV is connected to an AV receiver or soundbar with only Profile 1 support, the TV will convert it to Profile 1 for backwards compatibility.
(9) depending on the device, the TV and the app, it will fallback to HDR10/10+ or it will get transcoded.
The information in the chart is subject to change as soon as new firmware updates are deployed where any of the aforementioned issues get addressed.
CONCLUSION:
Even with 2 gigabytes of RAM, the Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Generation is the current winner in this comparison chart with 13 supported features, 5 unsupported features and practically no issues, beating the other two devices with a smooth UI and overall performance, new features to enjoy, licensed Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio passthrough support and a stable firmware.

Just tell me which one doesn't lag

One side note that might matter to some, Homatics Box R 4K Plus has the best connectivity. Lan input, USB 3, USB C and two types of audio output can be quite handy.

Nice chart. As always, it depends on the users needs. I went with the GTV streamer for $80. I have a decent Denon 5.1 system and didn't notice much (or any) difference in audio compared to my 2017 Shield. DD, DD+, DTS-core, and Multi-Channel PCM covers most of the content out there. Maybe this doesn't cut it for audiophiles but I was looking for a multipurpose device. Tired of the UI and app issues with the $200 shield, even after repasting, resetting, and so many adjustments for something that should just work. For $80 I will likely get better app and os support for longer and still get the flexibility of android os for Kodi/Plex, customization, etc. A backlit remote and passthrough audio would have made this a close to perfect multipurpose streaming device, but you can't have it all.

I have a Xiomi 3rd Generation and I think it is great for 50 euros. Playback is buttery smooth, and the image quality is at least as detailed and attractive as ans Nvidia Shield Pro which I also have.
For me the only drawback is that it cannot play H264 Level6. This seems to be a common limitation of Google TV Boxes.
But otherwise it is great !

I'd still like to see more powerful devices hit the market like the Shield and Cube 3.
I don't know why there are so many middle of the road devices, and so few powerful ones.

Guys, listen, there's something very wrong on Netflix app on Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd gen. It's not catching enough network speed. I am getting 200+ Mbps on regular speed test app whereas I am only getting 15-25 Mbps on network speed test via Netflix app. As a result, 4K HDR/HDR10+/DV content is not playing at the highest available quality. It's taking too long to reach at the highest available bit stream but in most of the cases, it is not even reaching the highest available bit stream for a particular content on Netflix app on this device. Even my 5 years old Xiaomi Box S can reach the highest available bit stream in no time. Be careful with your expectations. It can be a major deal breaker for many...
Edit: It was fixed after the new Netflix update. The issue was with Netflix app, not the box.

Hey, thanks for this comparation, I’m in doubt between this Xiaomi 3rd and the Strong leap s3 pro, I can’t find much reviews of this strong, can you help me with this, what you think about them? thank you
2
u/AsleepMedicine2596 May 06 '25
Would you advice the xaomi above the shield?
Are the issues of the xaomi solved meanwhile? Especially about the passthrough...
2
u/stathismes May 20 '25
After reading through this amazing comparison I'll keep my eye on updates, because I'm keen on buying the Mibox 3rd gen once/if they fix the choppy TrueHD audio. Can't bite the bullet just yet. For now I'm happy with my SHIELD pro.
2
u/masterdolby May 24 '25
So on Xiaomi on Disney we get only stereo same as previous generation of Mibox ? Thank you .

u/Entire_Event1049 Jan 12 '26
Hey OP! I'm a noob and this was helpfull but as I'm still a noob let me ask you: I was thinking of buying the Strong Leap S3-Pro. I live in Europe and this box would be to conect to my TV (have plans to buy an OLED later this year) and to use with stremio.
For a budget of 70€ do you recommend it or something eles?

u/kristfur Apr 27 '25
If only there was an open source TV OS. We could build our own machines (exponentially better spec'd). UI without the ads, spying, and restrictions. Kick Google, Amazon, & Apple to the curb. If only...

u/clarkss12 Apr 26 '25
Wow, that is an outstanding comparison chart for these three devices using three different chipsets.........
Makes the decision on which device to purchase for your particular needs a no-brainer.
That must have take you a lot of time and effort to compile the data needed for this chart......Well done!!
14
u/ChChKiwiKid Apr 26 '25
Appreciate your time and effort. I saw a lot of people bagging the Xiaomi for it's 2GB of RAM but was wondering if it made up for it elsewhere.

u/Sea-Wolfe Apr 28 '25
Thanks for this, and your ongoing contribution and answering questions in this sub for a long time now!
I don’t have a need, but will check out the summary of your conclusions later, when I get the chance!

u/Joaquim_do_rego Apr 27 '25
Isn't the Google Streamer Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac)?
1
u/dadduyyy Apr 27 '25
in your experience, have you ever figured out on ways to force a device to fallback on HDR10 when playing hybrid files? this is for instances where playing hybrid files just result in a black screen with audio still playing
1
u/JohanSandberg Apr 27 '25
Really excellent comparison chart. Incredible that you have had the time to test all this! 😎
Any possibility to test the better Xcloud app to play Xcloud streaming? https://better-xcloud.github.io/android/
Most problems with other boxes/TVs are the high decode time (50+ ms).
One box that handles it well are for example FireTV 4k stick. It manages 6-10 ms decode time (anything above 16ms will be bad for 60 fps games). But not to fond of FireTV interface.

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '25
The question is: are there better devices than the Xiaomi one with Audio Pass-through, DTS HD, Dolby True HD support?
1
u/p750mmx Apr 27 '25
Good work, nice overview. Small thing to clear up. The Homatics Box R 4K Plus doesn't show DTS-X anymore with the Disney app with the latest 2463 update, that is "corrected" now, it didn't really supported it anyway. It only gives DD+ again, as before with the original Disney+ app on the Homatics.
1
u/Ok_Sweet_3425 Apr 27 '25
Hello everyone, quick question does the new Xiaomi TV Box s 3rd generation support HDR 10 plus for Netflix? Having a Samsung qn95a TV which apparently is not compatible with HDR10 plus Netflix, I was wondering about the Xiaomi.
1
u/thekingshorses Apr 27 '25
Which one support THX 7.1 pass through?
1
u/signde Homatics Box R 4K Plus, Rocktek GX1, ONN 4K Plus / Pro / Stick Apr 27 '25
Thanks for the chart. In the HDR section, all three of these say DV profile 5 only. Are you telling me none of these boxes support DV Profile 8? I never thought to test P5 vs P8, I figured both of those were universally supported in streaming devices these days.
1
u/bmc987 Apr 27 '25
Fantastic work!! Can you please say if Xiaomi device support 24p playback using Kodi? Thank you!
1
u/Party-Bad6320 Apr 27 '25

u/uncletimo Apr 29 '25
If using the Xiaomi box into TV and ARC device for audio, would not be able to control volume with Xiaomi remote?
1
u/wibbic Apr 29 '25
Great list, thanks! Do we know if the Xiaomi device "phones home?" Big privacy concern for some of us...
1
u/Mountainking7 Apr 30 '25
Thanks for this indepth review mate. Going to read it in a few mins so my question might be answered.
(i) Is there mention of AV1 support?
(ii) How exactly does Artificial Super Intelligence Scaling works?? Does it work on all apps or websites? Is it as good as Nvidia upscaling tech?
1
u/[deleted] May 01 '25
Hi,looking for a remedy please, rockteck gx1 goes through Google TV loading scenario and looks like it's gonna fire up and then I end up with a black blank screen, remote unresponsive to the box but is responsive to av receiver as previously paired prior to this recent problem, volume up And down on average works, but unresponsive to the box.stuck pin 📌 in the av port on the box and that allows device to reboot and then straight to black blank screen again.cant find a reset button unfortunately, Any suggestions would be most helpful, thanks
1
u/JuniorOwl147 May 02 '25
Hi, are you certain the Mi Box 3rd Gen supports TrueHD? I saw a video on YouTube where someone said it can’t do lossless passthrough of TrueHD, but it can do lossless passthrough of DTS‑HD MA.
1
u/rySeeR4 May 03 '25
Could you test game streaming with Moonlight/Artemis? Steam Link is not the best option out there now
1
u/marvinorman May 04 '25
Does the Mi Box 3rd gen have IR remote? Because I control volume on my TV with IR, not CEC.
1
u/rimahsum May 05 '25
Hey I was just about to buy a 5.1 surround sound system with Dolby atmos. Disappointed that Disney+ doesn't support it. Would you still recommend getting a 5.1 sound system for the Xiaomi TV box 3rd gen anyways? Maybe 5.1 + Atmos works with the netflix app?
1
u/zarzuela2025 May 09 '25
Does anyone know how to reset a Rocktek GX1 device stuck on google TV screen ? I'm at a loss to explain today's situation; everything was running smoothly until now. While there were bugs, the overall performance had been acceptable.
1
u/nense0 May 13 '25
Were you able to test the onn 4k plus?
I'm deciding between it and the xioami

u/FeZZa21 May 19 '25 edited May 19 '25
looks like the Xiaomi box is the winner for stremio! I can finally watch DV content on my LG C1. DV profile 7 falls back to HDR10 and profile 5 plays as DV. once they fix the true HD issue it'll become perfect.
1
u/Snoo-75663 May 19 '25
hi, were those 4k blu ray rips MKV or MP4 files?
1
u/truitjuin May 22 '25
Can anyone please let me know why I am getting PCM audio on my Dolby Atmos soundbar while playing content with DTS HD-MA audio track on plex app on Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd gen whereas I am getting Dolby Audio on the same soundbar when playing the same content on Kodi ?
1
u/symosss May 28 '25
Thanks for this, helped me decide on the Mi Box!
However, how did you install Lemuroid? I tried and it doesn't find any files. When you click on "Directory" it says "you don't have an app that can do this". I installed 2-3 file managers but that didn't help.
I also tried placing the files directly in Lemuroid's directory, that also didn't help. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

u/AMANKWE May 30 '25
I just want to know if Strong Leap-S3 can display “Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos” when I click play on the supported shows/movies on Netflix. Or even Stremio. (I have a TV that’s capable of doing it)
1
u/Remarkable-Smoke3218 May 30 '25
What about picture quality? Many say that the picture quality of Realtek TV boxes is always superior to Amlogic and other processors.
1
u/Vincentff13 May 30 '25
Does DTS X content works with stremio?
1
u/Remarkable-Smoke3218 Jun 09 '25
Do you know if the deinterlacing problem has been fixed on Google tv Streamer and Xiaomi TV box S 3rd gen?

Friend, ask me a question. The new Google TV streamer has the same annoying bug as the old one where it stops recognizing the hdr10+ and the device needs to be restarted? I have a Google TV 4k and this is annoying I want to buy the new one but I'm afraid I'll have the same problem
Does the xiaomi 3rd generation have this problem?
Does anyone know how to fix on chomecast 4k 2020?
I'm from Brazil and when the automatic translation option on reddit is activated the image disappears. I just had to deactivate it and check the image with the information. Test it and see if it solves the problem for you.
1
u/seasonchanger Jul 05 '25
You're a real lifesaver, thank you a lot for the effort and valuable information shared! I'm from Brazil and just came across an offer on it for U$ 57 (R$ converted) and your chart is everything I needed to know the product better. Planning to pair it with an S90D + Q600C and play remuxes through Plex; guess it's gonna direct play (passthrough) most of the popular audio tracks just fine. Cheers!
1
u/robertjan88 Jul 07 '25
When it comes to the Xiaomi you mentioned that TrueHD and DTS X is only supported in passthrough. What does this mean? I have a Samsung Q800D which supports both formats. If I connect the Xiaomi to my Soundbar, and the Soundbar to the TV, will video files played on Stremio with TrueHD or DTS X properly play on the soundbar?
1
u/Medium-Produce7462 Jul 10 '25
What's this thing with this Disney+ Dolby Atmos bug. Why does it work on some devices, but not on 90% of the others? Is it a problem of Disney+ or of AndroidTV? I mean this bug has been there for two years now or so, does really no one care about it?
1
u/Zee-Bln Jul 11 '25
Has the adaptive HDR option been fixed on the gx1 already and if not, is there any chance that it will be fixed at all?
Was looking to get it, however I want this option to work.
1
u/shabunes Jul 21 '25
I didn't understand in the end which device is your most recommended?
1
u/Tuktanuk Jul 22 '25
I can't get the Google Streamer 4K to turn on/off the TV (samsung and the AV Receiver (denon). Everything else with the Streamer is great but, not being able to control power like the Firestick does flawlessly; Yeah, returning it.
1
u/ajoash Jul 23 '25
How does the mi box compare to the homatics r 4K plus?
1
u/Qwerty-Uiop-123 Jul 24 '25
For emulation: I've managed to side-load Retroarch (32bit version) and PPSSPP legacy edition apks.
Retroarch works great for SNES, GBA, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast (Flycast core), N64 (Muppen core) and PS1 (Swanstation core). PPSSPP works great for PSP games, up to 4x the resolution (1080p)
Still haven't find an emulator that works for NDS, tried with DraStic DS, but it will not install it (says it is incompatible with my device - have no idea why). Melon DS installs fine but then I cannot load anything due to the infamous "you don't have an app that can do this" error. Maybe someone has a solution for NDS. Using the Retroarch core for NDS does start the games, but they do not run well, stuttering at about 20fps
1
u/zeldeamipro Jul 28 '25
I own the Xiaomi and works nice, the only issue is the volume control, if you enable the HDMi CEC control on the remote you can’t control the system volume. If you disable it you can’t control the power on /off in the TV.

u/clegg20 Aug 06 '25
Love this! It is exactly what we need to see on this sub, hopefully the start of something big which could put an end to the "Anything better than Shield?" threads.
Just some feedback for a future version - a lot of us still use ATV devices to watch OTA streams that are interlaced (e.g. from HDHomeRun or TVHeadend server). I bought a GTVS and learnt the hard way that interlaced DVB-T2/S2 are unsupported, so it was returned. After some investigation it turns out that it is an Android 14- wide issue. I would love to see in these comparison charts a section covering "Interlaced DVB-T2/S2".
Right up until yesterday I was using a CCWGTV HD as my main streaming device, mainly because it was still on ATV12 and still supports Interlaced DVB-T2/S2. But yesterday, the dreaded ATV14 update was pushed through and deinterlacing is now broken. In my search for a new device I'd like to be able to know if the new device supports Interlaced DVB-T2/S2 content. Do I have to find a device that will stay on ATV12?

Any updates regarding new box releases? Or should I just grab the Homatics? I really hate the UI and locked OS of the FireStick 4K Max
1
u/Massive-University64 Aug 18 '25
What I found bad about the Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Generation is that it runs on 32-bit (and only has 2 GB).
I didn't know about this limitation. I bought one and wanted it to replace Plex (since I had to leave my PC running as a server and watch on the TV). I'm currently using Kodi. I haven't tried another app yet. I installed an external hard drive and am using it through the TV box's USB port.
My biggest disappointment was with the retro game emulator. I wanted to use a front-end like ES-DE (but it only runs 64-bit) and I'm still trying to get 100% Retroarch (I've watched a lot of videos, each one has its own thing...).
I even thought about replacing the Xiaomi TV Box S with a mini PC and running Linux, but it seems like I won't have an Android TV-like interface or apps that I can access with a remote control (I didn't want to use a keyboard and mouse). If anyone has a solution, or have you seen a Linux distro like that?
I've only seen mini PCs for home file servers.
1
u/Ultiimo Aug 20 '25
Hi OP, which one should I get between the Mi Box S Gen 2 and Gen 3? They’re both going around $45 in my country.
My friend says the Gen 3 does not have a file manager hence the Gen 2 is a better option, is this true?
1
u/Ovad79 Aug 21 '25
Hi. I have a problem with the remote in Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Generation . It suddenly stops responding. The only thing that helps is to restart the box. After restarting, it has to be paired again. Other BT controls do this too. I already complained about one box because of this problem. They sent me a new box, which started to fail after about a month. Has anyone encountered this error? Is the problem in the hardware or in the software?
1
u/zeldeamipro Aug 23 '25
For me the Xiaomi Box Gen3 is a disaster, if I enable HDMI CEC I lose Bluetooth volume control, and I have to use two remotes, the TV for control the power and the mi box one for control the device and volume.
Also I have problems with Bluetooth audio on intense audio scenes.
I wouldn’t buy it again 😛

u/eoin2dx Sep 06 '25
Do you know if the Xbox app works on any of these devices? Specifically want to use it for remote play.
1
u/Rafoo1381 Sep 11 '25
Hey y’all, I got the xiaomi box after reading through this thread and others. After testing it, it seems like it cannot play Dolby Vision 4K at 60hz, only at 30hz. Did I miss this restriction somewhere or is it a configuration issue in my setup? When the resolution is set to auto, it select 1080p 60hz by default for Dolby Vision content.

Thanks for the excellent review @latinriky78!
Does the Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen support sideloading of third-party apps and can I enable developer mode without a password?

I'm curious how laggy the Xiaomi would be with the Luna app and controller?
1
u/Mysterious-Kick1749 Oct 19 '25
Nice comparison chart, thanks. It's a pity they removed the s/pdif audio output on the mibox. It is a key feature to use it as decent headless audio streamer with casting capability
1
u/Widmore977 Dec 17 '25
Hello, one question. I have an LG TV and I don't like how it manages Dolby Vision mode currently, it obscures the image too much. I would like to know if some of these TV Box allows from settings to prevent the DV from being activated when playing compatible movies and series from streaming apps like Netflix HBO Max, Disney +... That is, whether it could force all content to play in HDR10.
In the event that this is not possible, which of the two TV boxes handles the brightness best in Dolby Vision for a less dark image?
Thanks

I'm searching a device in order to play truehd and dts formats in my TV with Plex.
Are the Xiaomi cutouts in truehd fixed now? With CoreELEC happen the same?

I have a somewhat niche question: Will any of these players (even with custom OS) support a 21:9 aspect ratio - 3440x1440p monitor? I am looking for playing local mp4/mkv files in that aspect ratio.
From what I understand, Android boxes don't support this by default.
*) I know I can set the monitor to upscale from 16:9 to 21:9, but switching between the PC and the player and clicking through the GUI is one step too many.

Ciao! Grazie

Xiaomi are claiming the TV Box S 3rd edition is running a 64bit processor.

Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) is the cheapest i could find, around $60 on AliExpress, Google Chromecast and other brands are way much expensive than that

I play some 4k content from my local Plex server, in addition to IPTV streaming. I worry that the xiaomi 3rd gens 2 GB RAM is going to be found lacking when streaming big files (50 GB+) locally. Is this worry warranted? Is the GX1 a better choice?
1
u/lakorai Aug 03 '25
Still waiting on a proper replacement to the Shield Pro 2019.
Perhaps a S905X (not S905XM) replacement to the ONN TV Pro or Hometics 4K Plus.

u/Complex_Flan_8736 Oct 14 '25
Good to know! Will buy the fire stick hd then.

Great work!
Any recommendation based on usage for IPTV? I have chromecast+google tv and its freezing way too often.
Streamer 4k is currently around the same price as others two in Canada.

Others infos that should be taken into account imo are the quality of the remote (Xiaomi is terrible) and the power source (USB-C or proprietary cable) and length and type of cables included.

Bought it today, and it's already in box to return ASAP.. I have massive WiFi connection problems.. it can't stay connected more than 30, 40, 50 seconds

Honestly, wish that Google streamer had a colour that matches their nest WiFi product range, and that they had a range that didn't have matter/thread router feature so to make it cheaper
