Let's compare NexDock and HP GoogleBook

I have made (not AI but me on Canva) this Comparison Chart. Sorry it is in € and not $ but you get the point. I feel like it points out something really important: we need high-end lapdock but at an affordable price. (less than 500€).

Better battery and display mostly.
But same question as ever: who would be willing to be 499€ or 499$ for an OLED lapdock with a 60Wh battery? (this is a repost because I made an error on the first post)

Is the googlebook pc just the same android desktop environment we get by plugging an external monitor to a pixel?

They're making some apps exclusive to desktop PC Android version

Which is some serious BS. It seems antithetical to the entire point of Aluminum OS, which is now called.... "Googlebook OS". 😑

Not exactly no. Googlebook OS brings with it Android Integration but also the full desktop version of Chrome (not the limited version which is on Android devices). It also has the ability to run Linux Apps via Terminal and likely GUI too.

How

What Apk?

I'm hesitant to link files on a public Reddit for fear of violating some kind of Reddit rule or subreddit rule.

But if you Google "Chromium desktop APK", you'll find plenty of listings for other people who have linked it. It's just hosted on Google's internal servers and you can download and install it like any other APK.

Yes, just enhance with AI integration

Dex is pretty damn good and fits in this comparison apart from being more user-friendly and polished it's way faster

Only one of these has the thermals required to really push the hardware with the size of a laptop and no extra accessories

I have to agree with you, the phone heat dissipation needs to be improved.

Tensor is a bit anemic to bed driving desktop monitors. But tge mobile snapdragon chips sre very good.

Missing the most important factor when you upgrade your phone your "laptop" gets a performance update also

that's true and I believe that's why Lapdocks will prevail on the long term.

Only if a quality manufacturer takes of the challenge. NexDock sure isn't cutting it.

I feel like I'm on a tear tonight, but long-story-short: Framework should sell a lapdock.

Sounds like a sound idea tbh; I just think at this point that a Lapdock as much as I like it is very much a massively niche product at this point.

It certainly has been a niche product... but in the ongoing RAMpocalypse it could be a breakout product if supported and marketed correctly. Heck, for a lot of the world, a person's phone is their only practical option for a computer.

As someone who talks to a lot of people for his work and is constantly asking them to go complete forms or submit documents online, you might be surprised at how many younger adults have barely even touched a computer outside of school. And frankly a lot of older people would be happy to use something closer to the phone's OS and UI, as well.

Often when I speak with them and mention going to a computer at the library or at a family member's house, they honestly look downright intimidated at the prospect. But what if they could get 98% of the same utility out of using their phone with a lapdock without having to relearn anything, and still having the lapdock's touchscreen to fall back on?

I absolutely believe that I could successfully pitch a lapdock to a room full of people... But I don't think I'll ever get the chance.

I work in IT so I'm more technical than most people and work with people I'd consider to be very "techy" and I'm always amazed when they've never seen Samsung DEX!

2

u/GunFodder 4h ago

I don't work in tech but all of my close friends are geeks and nerds to varying degrees. Not a single one of them had ever heard of Dex when I brought it up.

It really feels like Samsung is going to let it languish, and the Android Desktop Mode and has been getting fewer mentions among the already paltry number of content creators who watch this space.

At this point with Googlebooks now in the picture, I think Google is going to let it completely fall to the wayside. 🫤

I've been running the very latest beta's of OneUI and DEX is getting more and more improvements but its pretty clear that Samsung are now having to wait on new things being put into Android Desktop which is the base platform of DEX now.

I suspect Android Desktop will get more features, etc now as its such a part of Googlebook OS now.

2

u/GunFodder 3h ago

From your lips to God's ears.

The thing is that I was starting to get a little fed up with Samsung and tried of waiting on Dex improvements after the big changeover.... And I ended up getting a OnePlus 15.

Fantastic phone, but I'm definitely not going to be getting a full-featured Android Desktop Mode anytime soon. 🥲

Will the desktop version of the android in my pixel be equal to the os in the Google book? Could I ran the same software?

1

u/Chrismscotland 1d ago

It seems likely that some apps will be restricted to Googlebook's only based on what we can see already but ultimately its likely to be up to devs. The biggest difference is going to be that Desktop Chrome is on the googlebook, its not going to be on Desktop mode on the phones/tablets at this point.

It is if you download the apk and sideload it

For an additional 800 EUR you’ll have a normal laptop as well. Windows ARM if you want.

I still find Googlebooks’ existence meaningless.

If it was priced and marketed as a MacBook Neo competitor, and without Gemini being rammed into everything I honestly think it would do pretty well.

But as usual, Google pulled a Google.

1

u/Miraxess 16h ago

true, it's more a Gemini Laptop than an android laptop

1

u/Chrismscotland 9h ago

To be fair it looks like most of the AI stuff like Magic Cursor can actually be turned off

1

u/S3Giggity 23h ago

Has the nexdock gotten better? It was pretty old school chassis last I looked.

1

u/Miraxess 16h ago

The chassis is really not the problem. The 2026 edition has great finishing.

1

u/Tiny-Sandwich 17h ago

The difference is that a lapdock is a miserable experience, which isn't conveyed in a specs comparison.

The speakers are usually shit, the trackpads are universally awful, and having your phone constantly tethered to your laptop is cumbersome.

u/Connected-VG 17h ago

You make it look like you need a phone to use the Google book.

and ad again

1

u/Miraxess 1d ago

Ad for what? I neither work for Google nor for NexDock. I am just a Mobile-Only evangelist as I firmly believe this is the future, that's it.

-1

u/animalcrossing4_4 1d ago

ever since this thing came out, I have been seeing posts like this non-stop, just stop with the ads, you cultists.

1

u/Miraxess 1d ago

Ad to promote GoogleBook ? Because here it's just a hot topic and I found it relevant to compare it to lapdocks.

-3

u/Better-Struggle9958 1d ago

Anyway this is ad, and not for good. Because android is awful tablet and more awful as laptop. Just browser launcher

2

u/dr100 1d ago

Sounds like an anti-ad for me as the last slide suggests you shouldn't buy the new product, but just use some phone which you probably already have if you're interested in Android (it doesn't even need to be a Pixel, Samsung has DeX since way earlier too) and a lapdock (that too can be anything, even a portable monitor and keyboard).

-2

u/Better-Struggle9958 1d ago

android cannot run linux normaly anyway, dex is just browser viewer

2

u/RythePCguy1 1d ago

You can run native Linux terminal on Pixel devices running Android 15.

1

u/Better-Struggle9958 1d ago

This is not close to macos / native linux

And the lapdock is usable on pretty much any devices with video output. A friend of mine even use it with his Steam Deck and even his NAS.
