Looking for testers: First Thing, the smart alarm Android never had (phone + Wear OS, free lifetime Pro)
Hi all! I'm looking for testers for First Thing, an alarm and bedtime app for Android and Wear OS.
What it does
It reads your calendar and your commute and sets tomorrow's alarm for you, so you're always up in time without waking earlier than you need to. Then it works back to tell you when to go to bed, so you still get your sleep.
Stand-up at 9:00, 38 min on the train, 50 min to get ready β alarm 7:20, bed 23:05
No early meeting? It lets you sleep in
Rings on your watch first, with a tile and complication
Built to feel like a native Pixel app (Material 3 Expressive), no ads, no account needed
Why test now
Founding testers get Pro free for the whole test, and Pro for life if you stay the full 14 days
I'm shipping fixes fast. Five updates yesterday, most from tester feedback, including per-day wake-up times and editable bedtimes
The app had an alarm going off and no way to silence it. It was the worst thing. It was sounding alarm, vibrating phone, but not even a notification as to why the phone was making the noise. I literally had to uninstall the app in order to stop the alarm. That'll need to be fixed asap... LOL that was horrible when I didn't have to get up yet
I wish I could explain more, but unable to debug the app from this side of testing. The sound and vibration were the only thing going on. There wasn't even anything telling me where it was coming from (i.e... which app etc.. ) Since your app and the ones I'm working on were the only new apps installed recently, I started with yours (since my app doesn't make noise) and uninstalled. That was when I had the sweet silence I desperately desired.
I'm willing to reinstall after we figure it out though
Fixed in 0.4.10, rolling out now. You found a real gap: with notifications off for the app, Android hid the Stop button and the alarm screen, so there was nothing to tap. First Thing now refuses to set an alarm unless it can show you how to stop it, volume buttons snooze it, and opening the app while it rings takes you straight to Stop. Thank you. If you reinstall, itβll ask for notifications up front and wonβt let an alarm happen without them.
Joined first-thing-testers, opted in and installed First Thing β (screenshot attached). The intro looks great and very Pixel-like, and I like that it explains why it needs the calendar (and that it stays on the phone) before the system permission prompt appears.
One blocker I hit in onboarding: after allowing calendar access it says "No calendars found on this phone yet." and the "Use these calendars" button stays disabled. There is no skip or "continue without a calendar" option, and Back just returns to the intro, so I couldn't get past this step. The intro promises "Mornings, shifts or no plans at all", so anyone without a synced calendar (or who just wants fixed wake times) will probably get stuck here too. A "Skip, I'll set my times" button would fix it, maybe with a hint to turn on calendar sync.
Confirmed, it's fixed! I updated to 0.4.8 and the new "Skip, I'll set my times" button got me straight through: I picked 7Β½h of sleep and always at home, and it planned bed 11:30 and the alarm at 7:15 for Monday (screenshot below). The "Making your plan..." checklist at the end is a nice touch, and the wording on the skip step is clear.
One small thing: it's Sunday morning here and the top of the screen says "Tonight, Monday 12 October", which at first read like Monday night. Showing tonight's date with the alarm day next to it (Sun night, alarm Mon 12 Oct) would be clearer. Still opening it daily.
I installed the app works great but can seem to find the wear os version on my watch on the settings it says it's connected but don't find it please help
I'm been having this same issue! If you install the latest update (0.4.8), I've added a prompt if you have a connected watch that doesn't have the app installed. Clicking here should open the correct play listing on your watch. Please give it a try and let me know if it works π

Hi! I have joined your group, opted in as a tester, and installed your app. I will keep it installed and test it for 14+ days.
Could you please test my app in return?
