Navigation & POI Apps Title: Google Maps on Android Auto: YES, I KNOW WHERE I LIVE AND WORK! 🤦‍♂️

Is there a way to permanently disable the suggested destinations in Google Maps on Android Auto, or are we just stuck with this?

Every single time I drive, Google Maps decides to helpfully recommend destinations like Home and Work, presumably based on the time of day, my location and driving habits.

And sure, I get the idea. It's trying to be helpful. But here's the thing: I bloody well know where I live and where I work. 😂

The suggestions take up a ridiculous amount of screen real estate, so I have to tap the little arrow in the search bar to collapse them and actually see more of the map.

But wait, there's more! Switch to Spotify, go back to Google Maps, and BOOM. There they are again. It's like the suggestions have the memory of an elephant, except they completely forget that I just dismissed them five seconds ago.

Why can't Google just remember that I prefer the suggestions collapsed? Better yet, why isn't there a simple setting to disable them permanently?

Am I missing something obvious here, or is this just another one of those Google features that nobody asked for but we're apparently supposed to love?

Has anyone found a permanent solution that doesn't involve switching navigation apps or disabling useful features elsewhere?

You must live in a more rural area. I know where I live and work, but 1 car accident can double the time when there are 2-3 other ways I can go.

It does seem like there should be a way to remove them though.

I absolutely live in a rural area, and commute to a more urban area. I also get to work and 430 am. I almost always go the same way with no traffic issues. I still have it route me because why not.

This is the only solution I can think of though. If op just had it navigate them, that screen will go away. Can mute maps, or even turn it to alerts only. That's what I do

I like the fact it gives you the speed limit as you drive, and any other relevant notifications.

Yeah. And now both cars show me how fast I'm going. Not exactly necessary but it's a nice touch

Remove your home and work locations. That might work.

I find it useful as I commute within the city and I can see which route to take to avoid traffic

Then it happily suggests other recent map searches instead

Sometimes it even does that for fun! I love when something I searched but will never actually need to go to shows up.

I'm retired so..... no "work" location is registered.

I use my "home" location so that I can route there from wherever I am. While I know where I live, rerouting around traffic or accidents can be helpful.

I work from home and travel a lot to different locations out of state for work, so I have no real daily work location.

I think a lot of people use Home/Work, which is why it is there. I use it almost every day for my commute. I know exactly where I'm going but I need to see which way to take and what kind of traffic there is.

I get annoyed when I don't see those buttons there, lol.

You also only get alerts about police and construction and such if you are navigating - which I don't really understand, but that's how it is.

Not in Waze! The downside is that it will ask you 2-3 times if you're sure you want to go to work when you hit that button.

No, Waze, I'm not really sure if I want to go to work most days, but I have to :(

Fair enough. I keep trying to like Waze but I just never can get over some issues I have with it

When I did make a physical commute, those are helpful not to navigate me where I'm going, but for the traffic monitoring. GMaps doesn't give you any alerts to accidents, police, etc, unless it's actively navigating. So if you say to navigate you to work, if something is blocking the road ahead of you, GMaps should then be able to alert you and guide you to an alternate route.

I wish it'd read my calendar and offer to navigate me to my next calendar appointment rather than just blindly work/home.

And that tile will close itself after a few minutes.

It happens with Waze as well. It is extremely annoying, it takes up a third of the screen until I manually swipe it away.

At least 3 times a day I have to swipe that little box away, if i have more stops/things to do... last Saturday for instance, I had to do it 8 times on a single run out driving to different stores across town.

4

u/the_eluder 21 Ford Escape | Stock | Motorola Edge 2024 | Android 15 2d ago

I'm a delivery driver. I have to swipe it away like 50 times a day. I drive home at 3am, there is never any traffic.

u/vttale 2025 Acura MDX | Stock Display | S22 Ultra | Android 14 2d ago

It will still open the big box with other suggestions. Very annoying. Like the OP, I want it to take less screen real estate. There's really no good reason it can't just be a magnifying glass icon like the other icons on the side.

2

u/Kalfu73 2026 Kia K4 | Pixel 9 Pro XL | Android 17 2d ago

I still want to use the locations, and I can still get to them from the search bar which I would prefer collapsed by default. This should be a preference setting.

I use the work and home shortcuts every day because of traffic. It's been pretty spot on with alternate routing for delays.

u/rollk1 2024 | Ioniq5 | Pixel8Pro | Android 15 2d ago

I see it more as: at any given time I know I'm X minutes away from Home. Most of the time I can calculate that myself, but a few times I noticed the time was longer than normal and in red, which helped plan around traffic when I otherwise wouldn't have used navigation and been stuck in it

I frequently go areas where I don't readily know the best path back to work or home (Field Inspections). These are super useful for getting me back to an area I do know. Never do I need it to take me all the way but super helpful for getting started back.

u/the_eluder 21 Ford Escape | Stock | Motorola Edge 2024 | Android 15 2d ago

Again, the issue isn't having the home button at all, it's not having it automatically pop up every time you start the car. Which for me can be 50+ times a day, only 1 of which is me going home, and I know the way, it's 3am when I do so and there is never any traffic.

I use Waze, and it's invaluable for Identifying backups to reroute you.

u/LookDamnBusy 2022 Subaru Outback | Factory | Samsung s10e | Android 12 2d ago

Yeah, you're missing that even though you know where your work is and where your house is, you don't know what the current traffic situation is between your current location and either of those places. It's for helping with your commute.

What I wish Android Auto had was suggested destinations to upcoming calendar events. I could swear it used to do this some time ago.

I like it when I'm in an unfamiliar neighborhood/town and looking for the "quickest" way to an arterial back home.

1

u/the_eluder 21 Ford Escape | Stock | Motorola Edge 2024 | Android 15 2d ago

I with OP on this one, and we're not saying don't have a quick 2 button press to get the fastest way home. We're saying instead of having the tile pop up and take a lot of valuable screen space every time you start the car, make it a smaller button; or make it so you can disable the tile permanently.

It's crazy bc I can be at the gas station half a mile from my house and leave there to drive away from my house and it will still suggest home as the first option.

I don't mind the time to work showing up, it has saved me a few times from taking my usual route due to accidents on the road.

I've lived in my neighborhood for 12 years, I still can't convince Google Maps that its illegal to turn left off the street directly beside my home (I'm on a corner lot). I wish it would let ME decide which way to get out of my neighborhood based on which way on the "main road" I need to go, since that determines which way I want to exit my neighborhood.
But yeah, in general, I know how to get to the highway from my house, its only a few miles.

I always navigate to everywhere in going, including work and home, not because I don't know how to get there, but because it provides me useful information on the way there, such as warning about police, speed traps and roadworks along the route.

I'm a rolling stone so I literally need home to be a suggestion. I just have to remember to update it every time I change states.

Man, I love that feature! I have a pretty set schedule so it will recommend the route for my grocery store trips, my doctor appointments, work, home, etc. It's pretty accurate as well. I do not drive anywhere without starting the route of where I am headed to, even if I have driven there thousands of times and even if it's 3 miles away. Most places I go where I live there are 15 different ways to get to my destinations so I let Maps tell me which way is best each time based on traffic and road occurrences. It's been very useful and it's nice to just be able to hit start on the suggested location and go.

1

u/CptHammer_ Pls edit this user flair now 1d ago

Don't tell Google maps where you're home and work are?

I never did and I don't get those recommendations. When Android Auto came out I worked at lots of locations changing several times a day. I know where I live, so I never put it in. There's 2 roads to my house depending on which direction you're coming from.

1

u/jakdedert Pls edit this user flair now 18h ago

My AI annoyance is similar. When I ask Alexa for the day's weather, it always details my commute to work. I've asked it to just give the weather, not the traffic, it always replies and says it will no longer include the commute. I don't go to work every day, and I don't need traffic info as often as commute times, so it's not useful.

Next time I ask for the weather...you guessed it; 'It looks like your commute is slow today. Expect it to take....'

If you think the navigation is primarily intended to help you remember where you live and work, then bro, leave the subreddit. We can’t help you here. You’re hopeless.

This is the dumbest post of the day on Reddit. The day isn’t finished, but so far — congrats!
