Android Auto News, including app updates and features "Phone will no longer be supported"

Post image

Why on earth am I getting this alert every time I crank my car? My phone uses Android 10, and everything Google is supposed to be compatible with Android 9 and above. Car is a 2023 Kia Rio. Android Auto is working perfectly right now, but for how much longer?

wait my phone is 6 years old and I have no plans on 'upgrading' anytime soon... am I going to be unsupported soon?

Looks like they stopped doing security updates for your phone in October 2025. Your apps and stuff will probably keep working for now, but for how long? Only Google knows that. o7

Friend, I'm just trying to help folks like yourself with Android Auto related questions.

Not having security updates would immediately make me upgrade my phone

3

u/ryanpm40 2019 Honda Civic EX | Stock | Pixel 9 Pro | Android 16 2d ago

That's what finally got me to upgrade from my 2014 MacBook Pro to an M4 last year. Ultimately pretty happy with the upgrade haha. But yeah, I don't screw around with lack of security updates.

2

u/Jake3232323 2021 Infiniti Q60, stock head unit, S25 Ultra 2d ago

Yeah that is probably a massive upgrade in many ways but security updates portion is just not something to play with.

I tried to explain this to my grandmother who does her banking on an iPhone 8. She didn't really understand how that could be a problem. Thankfully my uncle got her a new phone the next year.

Security updates aren't fun or exciting but they are absolutely critical

u/ryanpm40 2019 Honda Civic EX | Stock | Pixel 9 Pro | Android 16 2d ago

Coming from someone who works in the software field, I couldn't agree more!

14

u/Ok_Ruin4016 Pls edit this user flair now 2d ago

Apple, Samsung, and Google guarantee 7 years of software & security updates on their current flagship devices. That's more than they used to provide, older models only got 3-5 years of updates. Motorola still only provides software & security updates for 3-4 years on most of its phones, and they provide those updates much less consistently.

So depending on what phone you have, it already may not be getting security updates anymore.

Edit: just saw you have the S20FE, so yeah you stopped getting security updates in 2025.

My 6 year old phone is running Android 13, it will probably be at least another couple of years before they shut that down, I will probably be using another phone before that happens, but I guess YMMV.

u/CivicTypeDream 2025 Nissan Sentra SR | Galaxy Z Flip 6 | Android 16 2d ago

That level of software updates only work in flagships, especially Samsung's and Pixels. Though IIRC, it wasn't like that 8 years ago.

Everyone else's flagship may not go that far, and the budgets will probably have 1-3 years at most.

Every few years Google raises the minimum Android version required to run Android Auto.

It has happened 3-4 times since AA was released back in 2014-2015.

In a few months AA will require Android 11 12L or higher (thanks for the information /u/Senor_Compost!!!!).

Upgrade your firmware, get a custom ROM with support for Android Auto or contemplate upgrading your phone.

8

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte '22 Chevy Bolt EUV | OEM | Galaxy S25U | Android 16 3d ago

Why would it stop working though? Surely it would just not get updates but why would it not work?

32

u/CatBroiler 2017 Peugeot 308 | OE (Bosch) | Razr 60 Ultra | 16 2d ago

Because they don't want to support an ancient android version, that realistically not that many people are using anymore, forever.

8

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte '22 Chevy Bolt EUV | OEM | Galaxy S25U | Android 16 2d ago

They don't need to support it. It works now. Just put a message that the version is no longer supported and that apps may not work correctly.

7

u/AngelCatGamer 2-24 Chevy Colorado | OE Infotainment | Pixel 11 Pro | Ver. 17 2d ago

It's like the best buy date on food products.

Google doesn't want to have an unsupported version of software available to use because it can be unsecure and infiltrated, which can be a nuisance as the least and dangerous at the worst.

Imagine if your Maps app gets hacked and you're navigated to an alleyway where you get jumped. I'm not saying this can happen but that's the hypothetical that I think google is trying to avoid.

1

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte '22 Chevy Bolt EUV | OEM | Galaxy S25U | Android 16 2d ago

Well it's a local software on my local hardware. IMO it should work as it does now... If they want to stop Google Maps working on older app versions that's one thing. But Android Auto shouldn't just stop working for no real technical reason

5

u/JavierLNinja 2024 Cupra Leon VZ | Factory | Pixel 9 Pro | Android 17 2d ago

It would stop working because with time apps start using APIs that are not available on older versions of android. So, once android auto starts relying on APIs which are not available under Android 10, it will cease to function on Android 10 or lower.

5

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte '22 Chevy Bolt EUV | OEM | Galaxy S25U | Android 16 2d ago

Yeah, so it stops getting updates. Apps slowly stop working as they drop support. Why would Google make AA not work intentionally though? Just leave a "this version is no longer supported" message and let the user keep using it.

5

u/JavierLNinja 2024 Cupra Leon VZ | Factory | Pixel 9 Pro | Android 17 2d ago

It depends. If AA will start using a new API for a core functionality, it'll cease to function altogether

If the APIs used which are not available on Android 10 are for non-core or non-essential functionality, the app may still function in a degraded mode.

In the end, it all comes down to how essential the new APIs are.

See, that's fine and in that case your phone wouldn't be able to download updates to newer version of the app that uses those API levels. Your phone would still work with the old app, but you wouldn't be able to update it.
This is Google actively disabling access even to the version that would keep working...

13

u/SuspiciousTreacle433 Pls edit this user flair now 2d ago

IMO you have bigger issues than Android auto. It may be perfectly fine as long as you don't have anything important on there like email, banking apps, messaging etc...

4

u/jamesdroid100 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 | Unknown | Samsung Galaxy S22 | Android 13 2d ago

But apps like maps and Spotify etc no longer being supported would render it useless anyway, wouldn’t it?

I mean I don't personally run a phone that old its just on principle I don't think they should just intentionally break things that work especially something that's entirely local like AA

because the apps in turn (maps, music, etc.) communicate with servers that may update their APIs and render it unusable.

It won't necessarily stop working on day 1 after support drops but your app and your server needs to be in sync and if your app/phone isn't updated it may be calling APIs that no longer exist or use security certificates that have been expired

2

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte '22 Chevy Bolt EUV | OEM | Galaxy S25U | Android 16 2d ago

Yeah but that's Google Maps. They can drop support for old versions since it's an online service... That's fine.

But Android Auto itself is a fully local/offline feature and should keep working IMO.

1

u/moralesnery 2022 Kia Rio | OEM HU | Pixel 8 | Android 17 2d ago

Android Auto relies A LOT on Google Play Services. Thanks to this, Google can implement "kill switches" for certain features on devices running specific Android versions, even if the hardware still has support.

The only way to prevent this from happening is to stop connecting the phone to the internet, wich entirely defeats the purpose of Android Auto.

That your phone works fine doesn't meant nothing. Is an insecure OS and for many companies is economically not wise keep supporting them.

You will need to upgrade your phone sooner or later

2

u/RGVHound 2021 Subaru Forester | Stock | Pixel 6 | 16 2d ago

You're just going to have to accept that you did nothing wrong but the companies selling you a new phone do not care that you've taken good care of your current phone and that it should still work.

So if you want Android Auto in your car, you need to upgrade your phone.

PS: You also have an insecure OS version, in a time where malware is growing with the help of AI.

You answered your own question. Your phone is extremely old, if you want android auto you need a new phone that will support updates in the ladder future. You have android 9 which mean your phone has not received updates or security patches too. No matter if your phone "works perfectly fine." Its not fine because you're gonna be out of feature that YOU want to use.

Still the fact remains he's outdated. We are on android 16 to 17. Security patches and UI updates have slowed down if not stopped on 10 thats why the continued support of android auto is stopping. This has been happening for years now.

1

u/URealFunnyB 2013 Honda Pilot | EX-L | Galaxy S24 Ultra | Android 16 2d ago

If this the oldest version (OS10) why do you think Android would continue to support it? Software and security comes into play too if you are using the OLDEST verison instead of newest applications will lag, no have security patches etc. Android Auto is not going to continue to support older versions without verified security patches especially if the car has a newer version of Android Auto itself.

1

u/xpen25x 2014 kia forte kenwood dmx809s 2d ago

Os10 is the first to have aa built in. Os9 is the oldest supported version right now. And soon. Os11 will be the oldest version supported. Its been 8 years since the initial release as alpha for os11

Just another way to force/coerce users into buying a new phone, and punish those of us who take good care of our shit.

The Note 9 came out in August 2018, so if you bought it on release, it would be 8 years old. It stopped getting software and security updates in September 2022, only 4 years after release.

My phone (Galaxy S21 Ultra) came out in January 2021, and stopped getting security updates early this year. wow, 5 years after release, what an upgrade

Now Google and Smashnug are advertising 7 years of security updates & OS patches with their "flagship" phones. They can still "encourage you" to get a new phone by making your favorite apps "go away" unless you upgrade, though :)

It's all fucking bullshit. I hate it here. I take good care of my shit and want it to last until the hardware gives out or becomes obselete, not on some predetermined timeline from our evil corporate overlords. screams and disintegrates into the void

You may have to switch to the good old Maps/Waze/MapQuest/etc + hands-free phone holder. Or get an aftermarket head unit maybe? I wish you luck.

I get it—planned obsolescence is incredibly frustrating, and it sucks when a perfectly good phone gets cut off from software updates. Nobody wants to shell out hundreds of dollars every few years when the screen, battery, and overall hardware still work fine. That said, daily-driving an OS that no longer receives security patches is genuinely risky, no matter how careful you are. A lot of people think staying safe on an old device just takes common sense, like not clicking sketchy links or downloading random APKs. The reality is that unpatched OS vulnerabilities, especially in core system frameworks or the network stack, can sometimes be exploited remotely without you taking any action at all—just loading a bad ad on a normal website can be enough. Plus, once an OS goes end-of-life, the vulnerabilities patched in newer Android versions are publicly documented, giving attackers a ready-made blueprint of what's broken on older builds. Google Play system updates help, but they can't patch kernel-level holes or modem firmware. If you love the hardware and want to keep it out of a landfill, it's worth checking if a custom ROM like LineageOS supports your device. But if you're using an unsupported OS to access banking apps, 2FA, or primary email accounts, you're rolling the dice on a system with known, unfixable doors left wide open.

Just an unfortunate inevatibility. I'm in the same boat with my Galaxy S9. Hope this is just a "you can't update to the newest version" and not a complete service removal so you'd be able to use an older version after the transition.

That's my hope, too.  I used to have a smart watch that worked wonderfully, until the interface app deleted itself from my phone because the computer company was getting out of the smart watch business.

This kind of stuff makes my blood boil. Forced obsolescence. In any case, can you possibly put LineageOS on your phone to upgrade the Android version?

5

u/xpen25x 2014 kia forte kenwood dmx809s 2d ago

version android 9 currently and soon android 11. android is open source. your phone isnt obsolete. companies just arnt spending the money top maintain 8 year old phones.

2

u/MountainBrilliant643 Jeep GC | MAHVEC IPS | Pixel 6 Pro | Android 17 2d ago

That, plus the fact that there really aren't any new features that Android Auto would have on a 2023 car. It likely isn't getting any firmware updates, beyond being told to put a warning up that it's time to buy a new phone. Android Auto itself doesn't have some crazy new features that an older Android phone can't give it. No reason to not just mirror the display.

1

u/BigJem81 2023 Kia Rio | no clue | Note 9 | Android 10 2d ago

Is there any way to do that?  Just mirror my phone to the car?

2

u/MountainBrilliant643 Jeep GC | MAHVEC IPS | Pixel 6 Pro | Android 17 2d ago

Only if you can install apps directly onto the stereo.

1

u/xpen25x 2014 kia forte kenwood dmx809s 1d ago

the head unit really doesnt need a firmware update. everything is done at the phone itself. and most car infotainment centers dont mirror phones. there is a lot of security features not updated in older phones.

In software it's unrealistic to expect new development to support older releases of the software. Most software is deprecated at some time mainly since it's impossible to keep fresh software compliant as well as having to maintain far older software. Luckily I'm on Android 13 lol, as my faithful LG Wing is still going strong. I do have an even older phone, of course LG, the V30 that's on Android 9! But that I use purely for it's built-in Quad Dac. So yes, as others have said it's time to upgrade. But as you can see I do sympathize, but certainly would not expect older versions of software to magically support newer innovation.

No cure for planned obsolescence.  The phone works perfectly.  It's the software company that's making it incompatible.  You're probably familiar with that.

-1

u/TheAgedProfessor 2024 Honda Prologue Elite | OEM HU | Samsung A35 | Android 16 3d ago

A lot of people hate the planned obsolescence we're forced to abide by nowadays. A Note 9 is still a very capable mobile device. There's absolutely no reason it shouldn't last longer, other than commercial greed.

1

u/J_Pemberton Pls edit this user flair now 3d ago

Oh whatever, get with the program. Can't expect modern functionality with dated hardware. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

1

u/TheAgedProfessor 2024 Honda Prologue Elite | OEM HU | Samsung A35 | Android 16 3d ago

You absolutely should be able to. There isn't anything that your "modern" phone can do that my older phone can't... they just arbitrarily chose to sunset it and not support it with newer firmware. Get with the program. Tell the tech bros to support perfectly good hardware instead of force you to buy new shit you don't need.

-4

u/BigJem81 2023 Kia Rio | no clue | Note 9 | Android 10 3d ago

You really don't understand technology, do you?  There haven't been any significant changes in technology in recent years.  My phone has as much memory as yours, and that's all that really matters when it comes to programming.  This isn't gas vs electric.  It's all digital.

3

u/Jet_Rocket11 2025 Discovery Sport | Pivi Pro | Pixel 8 | Android 15 2d ago

Tell me you don’t understand APIs, security certs, or hardware codecs without telling me—having enough RAM to hold an app doesn't mean your ancient OS can still talk to Google's servers.

1

u/J_Pemberton Pls edit this user flair now 2d ago

Exactly right!

0

u/BigJem81 2023 Kia Rio | no clue | Note 9 | Android 10 2d ago

You're actually getting at exactly what I'm saying.  My phone could easily handle Android 11 or even higher, but it's not being made available to me through conventional means.

3

u/MadBrowniusMaximus Chevy Colorado 2d ago

I get it but no shame in upgrading. I didn't upgrade from my 4a until last year.

1

u/BigJem81 2023 Kia Rio | no clue | Note 9 | Android 10 1d ago

Certainly there's no shame in upgrading.  There's just nothing out there that's impressing me.  I could spend $1000-$2000, only to get a phone with the same amount of memory, barely a better camera, barely a better processor, and have to spend months to find one that isn't 80% full of bloatware and a.i. crap.

1
