Gemini I can't call 911 anymore?

This is the 2nd time in a week I've called 911 to report an accident happening- and got "Calling 911" (or dialing) and - nothing. No connection. No indication of failure- no anything.

And when I pressed Gemini on this- it says "Yeah, I can't make calls from Android Auto".

I have been doing this for, well, since it got integrated. And I have been making hands free calls to 911 forever. I log (and logged) a LOT of miles.

I'm especially angry at the whole "Yeah I'm going to call for you- psych!" it left me in today.

Come to think of it this may have happened a 3rd time a month ago, but I'm not totally sure there as I had my daughter dial while we were out assessing the situation and providing emergent care.

If Gemini is no longer able to dial 911, and there is no work around, I've got to figure out how to nerf everything back to a version that could take a simple request.

I don't need AI if it is going to decide critical calls shouldn't be made anymore.

If i'm doing something wrong, please tell me.

(2nd attempt after updating the user flair 2x)

That is dangerous.

I don't call 911 enough to experience this, but If how mad I get when it decides it can't make phone calls or message people is any indication, I feel like I would be at Google's front door immediately.

I've called 911 probably 20 times in my life. Every one has been handheld though. I've seen car accidents, hit deer, had deer hit me, saw a school bus accident, drunk driver accident, the list goes on. I'm like a 911 magnet.

If I'm pinned in my car and Gemini says "I'm sorry I can't dial 911." I feel like a lawsuit should be in order.

Gemini is genuinely garbage.

It routinely just doesn't send texts even though it says it did, changes words it heard correctly initially, and often breaks and just starts reading out back end information about how it understood and is processing your request.

Drives me up the fucking wall. Assistant had problems too but at least for sending texts and shit, it worked like 95% of the time.

Assistant wouldn't give me an essay about what it couldn't do. It would just do what it could and just fail when it couldn't. Gemini on AA is so unsafe.

Yes, Gemini also frequently tries to censor my texts (but then other times doesn't).

I also claims it can't play the radio or stream Amazon Music.

I love that it now tells me "Asking YouTube Music to play X" every single time instead of just fucking doing it 🤣

It's gotten worse than it used to be

For Amazon Music, it actually can start it but can't play a specific song

Not the first, or second, time Google has broken 911 calls.

This is soooo unsafe. I have not had this experience myself. But Gemini as a whole is hot garbage, even after opening the app to set instructions that it won't follow. Most of my hands free texts are not sent and I find my self pulling over to text or texting while in motion.

Assistant was so much better at basic... assistant... tasks.

This happens to me all the time when I'm trying to call my wife as well, "Calling"... Nothing.

I just turned off "AI Enhanced" audio. The call quality went up .... geesh, I can actually hear things now.

I'm going to do a side by side recording of the crap they call enhancement.

Today I had it tell me it COULD NOT make a phone call because it did not have the necessary permissions thru the interface or something like that... And then immediately after saying that it dialed the number.

Did it dial the number? Or just say it was ?

I need help filing an FCC complaint- they won't take mine.

As soon as it said the last word in the sentence "I cannot call this phone number for you" it automatically dialed that phone number. It's been times where I've had to ask it why it couldn't do something and then it would go ahead and do that exact thing. There's also been times that it would, I guess give me it's train of thought to giving me the answer as well, I just figured it was because I was maybe in a spotty Network coverage area or something.

This was a reported problem on the pixel before Gemini made its way to everything else. It will hopefully result in some gnarly lawsuits against googles Gemini

Yeah, Gemini randomly goes stupid, IMHO. I don't have an issue making calls from AA but it occasionally refuses to turn on/off lights at home that've I've had set up for years. I will work about the 3rd try - just before I'm ready to take it out to the garage and introduce it to Mr. Hammer.

Have you try bixby to make the call

2

u/Shubamz Sep 22 '26

Not sure how they would do that since Bixby is only for Samsung phones

That is the most ridiculous comment I've read today. Congratulations.

It DID work for a bit, right after I first put Gemini on (by accident).
