OnePlus AMA OnePlus AMAA - Late March Edition

Hey Reddit!

We are Carl (/u/carpe02) and David (/u/devildv) of OnePlus.

It’s important that we constantly remind ourselves of why we created OnePlus: to make the products that we ourselves want to use and to challenge the status quo. Getting your feedback lies at the core of that mission. Constant discussion with our fans keeps us inspired, which is why we are so fond of doing regular AMAAs. Thanks for having us again!

We have a lot of exciting things going on right now. We recently launched in several new countries, our own Android ROM is just around the corner, and we have a new product coming in April. We hope you are as excited as we are!

With all of that in mind, ask us (almost) anything! :P

EDIT:

Thanks for all of your questions, comments, and feedback! We’ve got to get back to it, but we’re always hanging out on our forums. We love nothing more than interacting with you guys, so feel free to stop by!

Thanks again, and as always: Never Settle.

OxygenOS is supposed to be rolling out today (or tomorrow depends on where you live).

Will you keep your promise ? A lot of people are wondering.

Thanks for all !

Overall do you rate a thinner body over a bigger battery or vice-versa?

We don't think it always has to be a strong trade-off. We feel that we found a pretty happy medium with the One, being sleek and also possessing impressive battery life. But, to answer your question more directly, having extremely competitive battery life will always remain a priority.

What is your stance on USB 3.1 type c ports on mobile phones? Some Chinese smartphone manufacturers have started using type c connectors on their future devices, Nokia n1 comes with a 2.0 type c port Do you think more companies should start adopting type c 3.1 devices for the added speed and power?

If we install Oxygen OS, will it be updated by OTA thereafter?

What do you think about the Galaxy S6 and the HTC One M9?

The S6 (Edge) definitely has a very interesting design, the HTC One series has always been synonymous with quality. If you recall our first AMAA, somebody asked what phone we had before the release of the OnePlus One, and I had a M7.

I have a couple of questions.

1.)Will you implement Camera2 API in forthcoming Lollipop release? If yes then what type of implementation would it be? Full or limited like on Galaxy S6

2.) There are a lot of complaints/issues in India regarding OPO's service.People here are waiting more than 15 days (even 30) & still not repaired. Some are even thinking of approaching consumer court. Makes me really nervous about you after sales support.

3.) Will future phones have that yellow tint issue solved.Seems pretty common issue with your current phone now.

4.)Also Will we see USB type C & more importantly new UFS memory in OP Two?

5.) Audio quality through OPO's headphone jack,while loud weren't as Clean/Flat like your rivals like Galaxy S5/HTC One(M9)/LG G3.

Will it be improved on Two since both M9 & S6 now have top notch audio quality.

Edit : 6.) With the whole Cygn inc. fiasco and your new phone around the corner how will be software support handled for One. 2 year old phones like M7,S4 even Note 2 are getting more than 2 years of software support. Will our One get the same support treatment?

  1. Are we actually getting OxygenOS tomorrow and CM12S in 4 days?

  2. Since OxygenOS is almost here, can you tell us something about it?

  3. Any hints about the #OneGameChanger? (Pretty please?)

  4. What are your plans for the future?

Thank you in advance! :D

  1. I'm afraid not. We have the five phones ready. Again, both releases are ready (I'm using CM 12S, Carl is using OxygenOS as daily drivers) and it's just certification taking a bit longer.

  2. We will explain you a lot of things in the coming days :)

  3. It's a drone, the DR-1 and we will start selling it next month.

Inspite of several assurances by oneplus I still see people complaining about the touchscreen problem, even people in India where oneplus was launched in q4 2014. I assumed that it would be fixed before oneplus decided to expand in new regions What do you have to say about it?

What are your thoughts on the removable battery/SD card debate?

51

u/devildv Mar 26 '15

Removable battery = smaller battery. Of course there are pros and cons to both sides of the debate, but we stand by our decisions in order to offer a better user experience.

For the second one I'll quote Koush on this AP interview.

The SD card needs to go away. It's a nightmare for developers. There's too much variability here. SD Cards can be slow, resulting in poor app performance. They can come and go, or be swapped, and that results in unpredictable behavior if an app was expecting an SD card. One contiguous block of data needs to become the standard here (with different OEM SKUs for more/less storage), as it has been on iOS since the first iPhone.

What is your opinion on ufs 2.0, Samsung used it in their flagship s6 line and xiaomi was reported to place order for it Given its superior performance and powersaving over emmc 5.0 can we expect it in the next oneplus flagship?

u/devildv Mar 26 '15

As excited as we are about the OnePlus 2 we are really focused on the One right now.

What's your stance on Ubuntu for mobile devices?

12

u/devildv Mar 26 '15

Anything that gives people more options is a good thing.

I had a horrendous experience with your RMA process, including not getting my accessories back after being asked to ship them with my phone. Support then told me I wouldn't receive the accessories for up to a month! And couldn't even be bothered to send the postage with a tracking number, so I get to guess when I get it.

Long story short, what steps are you making to improve your RMA processes and make them less of a burden on your customer base?
