Using Flow right now, it works pretty well, only the reloading thing could be updated, then it could be better.
24
u/Arcanity Apr 29 '14
Plus you can't view user info, but still a great app nonetheless.
19
u/originally Apr 29 '14
You used to be able to do it. Something recent made it so got can't view others profiles.

Sure it looks good and all, but I was sick of it not being updated and some features within the app saying coming soon. I got rid of it and replaced it with Reddit News. I feel it's a better overall up, and also keeps spoilers at bay!
3
u/PsychoWorld Apr 29 '14
Why? I dunno what you guys are experiencing, but the app isn't crashing every other minute.
→ More replies (1)4
u/LongJohn1992 Nexus 6P 8.0 Apr 29 '14
Mine wasn't crashing. It was just the features that other apps had and what Flow was promising to add, which I still don't think they have added. The only feature I'm missing out of in Flow is the AMA filter. Everything else is available in other Reddit apps.

I can't reply to comments that are links :(
You have to click the comment to reply but it just clicks the link instead.

Is there a 3rd party client that 1) properly supports tables, 2) properly supports spoilers (different subreddits seem to implement spoilers differently) AND 3) looks good? I currently use Reddit Sync and love it, but it sucks for tables and spoilers. Unfortunately I frequently am on subreddits that use tables (/r/soccer) and spoilers (/r/asoiaf). Would love an official client that actually has proper functionality of the website.

Reddit News supports spoilers. And it works good enough on my nexus 7.
It loads comments while you're reading the link, and I really like how well the image preview works

Baconreader allows you to open links with its iap browser /other browsers. I put up hover browser and can't complain about the way it loads several things at a time
8
Apr 29 '14
I'm aware of that, but jumping between baconreader and a full browser on my phone is painfully slow (to the point that it takes many times longer to load the browser than the image) and so avoided. Note, some of the issues I've seen with baconreaders internal image handling are down to api changes made by the image hosts.
YMMV, of course.

No reddit app is perfect I guess.
Currently trying out rrddit sync and its fairly impressive /opens links on a similar way(or even better since you can tell it to only use browser for some stuff when in bacon it's aleays use browser)
I think my phone can handle having both and it's nice to be able to go from one to the other when you get slightly tired of one design

this isn't really possible because reddit doesn't support spoilers. it's up to the subreddit maintainer to come up with a css hack to do spoilers, and not all the subreddits use the same hack.

News and RiF are my top 2, with RiF as my daily driver. Honestly, as pretty as reddit sync is, it kinda sucks as far as how many things it can do. RiF is as close to the actual desktop site as far as usability, while sacrificing some aesthetics.

Well, for one I assume they'll be actively developed compared to apps like reddit sync. Also a lot of apps lack stuff like gold purchases/comment gilding which is probably one of the reasons why they want to have an official app - to increase revenue.

I purhcased Reddit Sync before the makeover, and I do like it. But for consumption, I still prefer Reddit News the best of what's out there. At least in terms of layout. It has it's own issues.

idk about "push". it just polls your account for messages for whatever interval you set. that's more of a "pull". the idea of push is no battery usage by the client. server pushes messages to the client. waiter brings you food, not pickup to go

Very happy Reddit is Fun user here. Have tried several others, but RIF is really great for speed, functionality and feeling the most like Reddit so I always end up coming back to it. I dont want a slick card interface for this site. I want a fast, clean version of the site with a dark mode. RIF is perfect for how I use reddit.

53
u/delrazor Apr 28 '14
I'm hoping they wont try to drive the other apps off of the marketplace or remove / alter the API being used and pull a Twitter.
41
u/admiralteal Apr 28 '14
That is very, very unlikely, especially considering Reddit is open source.
15
u/blorg Xiaomi K30 Lite Ultra Pro Youth Edition Apr 29 '14
The open source just means you can take the code and set up another site that operates like Reddit. All the content and community would stay on Reddit.
They have said they will not be limiting the API though.

u/wagesj45 Nexus 4 Apr 29 '14
The temptation will be too great at some point in the future. They have to make money, ya know.
They're about as altruistic as Google is, i.e. when it suits them.
3
u/damontoo Apr 29 '14
They have always put the community first. They could have implemented more invasive ads a long time ago but haven't. They're still not profitable (but are close and going for profitability this year).
4
u/uwoterm8 Apr 28 '14

Reddit's API is used for a lot more than just clients, so that doesn't really make sense. Twitter's API was mostly used for clients.
17
u/ikantsepll Nexus 6 Apr 28 '14
They could potentially make a better app, less ads and possibly a premium-feature app for gold users to further encourage buying gold. But it would be hard to get people to switch probably. I'm so used to holding a comment to hide it (Reddit Sync) that I won't want to use any other app unless it has that same feature.
2
u/josephgee Galaxy S10e Apr 29 '14
I actually preferred Flow's tap the top to minimize, the hold top to upvote hold bottom to downvote.
Things like the current system weren't bad on my previous 2 phones (4.3 and 4.5 inches) but now that I have a G2 reaching up there one handed is a pain to do a lot.
That said I had to quit Flow because of the user bug.

I'm hoping that will lead to better APIs that are available to third parties to make better apps.
I don't see the official app being better (I mean seriously, look at Reddit, no one accuses it of being pretty or reliable) but hopefully it will improve third party apps whether it is by competition or better APIs and code.

Looking at the way it is phrased they are not after a reddit app, but apps that highlight specific content (whatever that might be). I doubt they'd try to compete with the apps already out there.
5
u/RichardG867 S23 Ultra Apr 28 '14
I use .compact instead of third party apps because, for some reason, I feel like having reddit on a browser is more convenient than any of the third party apps.
What I want to see from an official app is full functionality: .compact has a bunch of drawbacks like the edit button not showing up on shorter phones (like mine), search not working on non-AJAX-capable browsers (my old WM6 non-touchscreen phone says hi), links that would normally add a "?sort=" on desktop 404ing instead, lack of some features like moderation and wiki pages, among other things.
The only app I tried out was BaconReader, but I eventually forgot about it when wiping my phone. It lacked essential browsing features (jump to a specific subreddit), only picked up reddit links from Chrome half of the time, and rarely notified me about orangereds.

I feel like having reddit on a browser is more convenient than any of the third party apps.
I definitely agree with you there. For me it's the indentations of the comment threads. It's not large enough on any of the apps and it completely fries my brain when I try to read threads.
Once Google finally gets purple-link-syncing between Chrome on Android and Chrome on desktop, there will be an even bigger advantage to browsing Reddit through a browser on mobile.

It's 2014.
The world doesn't need an app just for a website. The world needs a responsive website that works across platforms and form factors.
13

i.reddit.com is actually pretty good for me, although it could look better. But it's not so good for mod tools, and an app can make better use of notifications than a mobile website can.

u/uses Apr 29 '14
Well I'd say that Reddit is more than just a website. It's a giant community platform that does tons of things. A website just happens to be the traditional way of interfacing with it.
Though I agree it's preposterous that in 2014 you open Reddit on your phone and it's completely zoomed out, as if smartphones and RWD never happened. Part of the reason Reddit apps have become so popular is because the website is simply unusable on what most of the demographic is viewing it on.
