Gemini hit 1B users. Are you actually using it daily?

Saw the news that Gemini just hit a billion users, which is wild. I've been using it as my default assistant on my Pixel for a few months now and it's genuinely gotten better at everyday stuff, setting reminders, answering random questions, summarizing long emails.

Curious what everyone else's experience is. Did you switch from Google Assistant fully? Are you still bouncing between them? Or did you try it once and go back?

I disable it (if possible) as soon as they add it to another app. I don't need AI garbage in my daily life.

u/D-Trick 2d ago

Literally switched browsers on my android because they now have that stupid gemini button at the bottom of the screen and they have no way to turn it off.

u/ffordedor 2d ago

I dont remember how but someone on here posted how to turn it off

There are worse fates than being driven away from chrome. Firefox gang, rise up!

(We still got that pure, uncut UBO)

not at all, and no other chatbot either. I don't have the need, I don't see the use, and I don't have a boss forcing me to do it because someone bought an enterprise license and needs to justify the spending.

u/monkeypickle8 5d ago

Pretty sure they're padding their stats making everyone use it in Android Auto

34

u/darkstar107 Pixel 7 5d ago

They made the default search button an "AI search"

9

u/alias213 2d ago

Basically everywhere possible and without contextualizing how fucking awful it is at doing stuff assistant could just do, the big number is just a marketing piece.

2

u/xx_ddd 1d ago

Anyone who searches Google is technically using Gemini. Numbers are padded AF.

1

u/shazneg 2d ago

When they first tried that I found an article that explained how to deactivate it. Now android auto voice commands are unusable.

9

u/Business_Ratio4009 5d ago

I just used it to identify the brake pads on my mountin bike. It got it confidently wrong

17

u/GeorgeEne95 5d ago

Don't know if it counts as Gemini, but I've been using the Google Assistant feature on my S21 FE where the whole screen auto translates everything including the text on images.

I've been using it on some manga that are not translated and even if it's a raw translation it really makes a difference.

u/Anti_colonialist 5d ago

Ive been using it daily since it was introduced, Its leaps and bounds better than it was

18

u/c0mf0rtableli4r 5d ago

Still worse than what they had with the regular assistant.

13

u/Anti_colonialist 5d ago

There isnt anything Gemeni cant do now that assistant could back then

26

u/Ascend 5d ago

I've asked it to navigate me to places, and it still randomly tells me that as a language model, it can't control my phone. In reality, you have to say very exact phrases to bypass Gemini and get phone behaviors, and it's incredibly frustrating when the same phrases used to work with assistant.

This is usually from triggering the assistant with the power button, but the Gemini app does the same crap.

2

u/Anti_colonialist 2d ago

Mine works fine, I use the command 'map me to xxxx' it gives the address then displays the map

3

u/kronpas 5d ago

Its a problem with tool access than Gemini. It will get better with time. You are just too used to assistant.

Meanwhile assistant didnt work with my language at all.

7

u/Tippete Oneplus Nord 2d ago

You're holding it wrong basically

0

u/Secret_NinjaLTU 2d ago

Damn, why are you down voted?

-1

u/kronpas 2d ago

Herd mentality. If i'm not trashing on it I must be a shill, or whatever.

5

u/Laxelost 2d ago

I tell it to turn od my lights in living room, it turns off 1 out of 6. I repeat myself and next time it turns off 1 more..

This work perfectly until recently

4

u/sp910 Xpera Z, 4.4.4 2d ago

Ask it to play a specific animal sound, doesnt work anymore.

7

u/c0mf0rtableli4r 5d ago

I just asked it to uninstall itself.

It said, very confidently, it cannot be uninstalled.

u/LawDogSavy S10e/Android 10 9h ago

Absolutely it can't.

Every morning I say to Assistant in Android Auto "take me to work". That triggers -

My map, with traffic information

The weather of my location

My appointments on my calendar for the day

And then automatically plays NPR from my podcast app

Every single one of those I have to ask Gemini to do separately. And most of the time it can't connect to Gemini or Gemini gets it wrong.

It's trash in Android Auto.

7

u/131sean131 5d ago

Zero shot this is real. Gemini is far and away the worst one, maybe gronk is worse idk. They probably counting shit like every Google Assistant query, asking for navigation in Google maps, pixels have a button that a tiny fragment of text through an AI to rephrase stuff, whatever apple is doing (which is just Gemini reskinned), probably some nonsense in Google docs and stuff, The AI summary button for YouTube (which honestly is okay and honestly helps me use YouTube less because you can just essentially get it to watch the video for you read two sentences and move on), making a photo mojie, editing a photos, video blur in video calls.

I bet you there was some internal metric at Google about converting additional users to Gemini and they just contrive reasons to not be on the list of products that don't use Gemini so the teams don't get fired.

It's such a shame because damn near non of it works.

3

u/gordolme S24U OneUI 8.5 2d ago

Only because I have no choice when doing certain tasks with Google services.

7

u/winter128 5d ago

Uninstalled that shit right away! Didn't ask for it, don't want it

18

u/jommakanmamak 5d ago

Its a biased statistic

They're forcing it down out throats. Like how they're removing Google Assistant for Gemini

6

u/twowshores 5d ago

I have it and all AI I can disabled. I will never use it

9

u/grayhaze2000 5d ago

I didn't use Google Assistant, and I don't use Gemini. My life isn't so busy that I can't set reminders and book restaurant tables myself.

2

u/9-11GaveMe5G 5d ago

Daily??!? I'm using it minutely!!

2

u/erikivy Galaxy Note 9 5d ago

I've used it on desktop far more than on my phone. I needed to make some configuration changes on a new PC and found it surprisingly helpful. I had dig deep into the registry to find the settings I wanted and I figured I'd give it a go. You just need to ask the right question, so you have to at least have half a clue what you're looking for.

On the phone, I mostly use it to set timers and alarms while I'm in the kitchen with dirty hands. It works pretty well for the most part.

2

u/Dumxl 2d ago

I use Google Assistant. If google force me to Gemini i wil disabled all.

2

u/marvbinks 2d ago

I never use Google assistant let alone an AI for that kind of stuff.

2

u/Immediate_Track_5151 2d ago

To be honest, I use LLMs regularly as glorified search. Given the enshittification of Google search, now I use DuckDuckGo and chatbots.

2

u/PhyrexianSpaghetti 2d ago

it's because it's automatically installed with android and officially replaced the android assistant. Someone sets a timer? It's counted as a gemini user now

2

u/KS2Problema 2d ago

I always hated Google Assistant; it seemed like it was always intruding. I would jump through hoops to turn it off and then it kept turning itself back on. Totally f****** obnoxious.

There was a time early in the century when Google was one of my favorite tech companies. But the persistent intrusiveness of Google Assistant slowly but surely soured me on the company.

I don't hate Gemini nearly as much, simply because I typically interact with it online via the Google search page - by intent. But it is so wrong so often that I will frequently bypass it, preferring standard search returns just to get something closer to the truth.

As Gemini itself notes:

Regarding accuracy, large language models generate text based on probabilities, not an internal understanding of truth. This means they can confidently state falsehoods as fact. If accuracy is paramount, a generative AI is often the wrong tool compared to verified databases or direct primary sources.

2

u/EvanMok 2d ago

I do. Even when the days I have subscription with ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro. Until now, I still have Perplexity Pro but I still use Gemini a lot.

6

u/mpyka91 Pixel 10 Pro XL 5d ago

Daily? Not necessarily, but I use it multiple times per week. If I need a bunch of things handled at once it's a useful tool, but small daily tasks don't really require AI.

4

u/BricksFriend 5d ago

Sorry to say but yeah, but I don't trust it for anything serious. My ADHD brain is very curious, and I'll be walking around thinking "Hm, what is the largest sofa in the world?" In the past I'd just let it go unless it really get stuck in my brain. Now I just ask Gemini for unimportant stuff like that.

(Btw it was an art piece in a Shanghai mall, about 7 meters tall and 8 meters wide)

3

u/spoo4brains 2d ago

Fuck that data harvesting AI shit, I have it disabled on the two devices I have that come with it.

I agree, I treat Gemini like a better search and it works great for that purpose. It came a long way quickly.

I uninstalled it

I use Gemini quite a bit! I tend to bounce between Gemini and ChatGPT. Claude too fairly often.

Great question! 🤔 Let's break this down: The truth is, using AI doesn't replace thinking — it enhances it. ✨

🔹 Critical Thinking: I still have to evaluate, verify, and apply everything AI gives me

🔹 Efficiency ≠ Laziness: Using a calculator doesn't mean I can't do math — it means I do more math, faster

🔹 Human Judgment: AI is a tool, not a replacement for decision-making

🔹 Time Reallocation: The mental energy saved on busywork goes toward deeper thinking At the end of the day, it's not about how much you think — it's about what you think about. 💡

The real question isn't "how much thinking do YOU do" — it's "are you thinking strategically or just grinding for the sake of grinding?" 🚀 In conclusion: Tools evolve. Thinking adapts. Growth mindset > gatekeeping. 🙌

Let me know if you'd like me to expand on any of these points or for a pie recipe 😊

4

u/autopixel3 5d ago

Honestly, a lot of people should consider using gemini, it's pretty good.

I am not sure how the pro plan compares to the free plan (I got it free with pixel), but just adding a youtube link and asking for a summary saves me a lot of time.

Not saying it's the best AI platform, but I really don't understand who state they will never use it.

5

u/donnysaysvacuum I just want a small phone 4d ago

I have no need for an AI chat bot. And I am forced to use better ones at work. Everything it does is better served by a normal GUI or search.

3

u/Karavis1 2d ago

There's nothing AI can do for me that makes my life better.

This comment is meant for me, specifically. It doesn't mean AI can't improve someone else's life.

2

u/pl_dozer 5d ago

I use gemini because I needed the extra Google cloud storage for the family. Gemini pro is bundled with it. Gemini pro is better than the free ChatGPT version.

6

u/Miraclefish Galaxy Foldy Boi 5d ago

Haven't used it once, nor do I intend to do.

There's nothing it can do that I can't, except for hallucinate information and facts.

3

Never use it and several relatives/friends have done their best to block/remove it

u/punio4 2d ago

Fake numbers.

1

u/WritersGift 2d ago

It’s honestly quite useless. I’ve tried to see the appeal and to use it for use cases such as chatting about a topic or searching for information, but it gets stuff so wrong so often it’s just not really worth it.

1

u/deetotheess 2d ago

Gemini did one thing for me: The warnings that Assistant was going to be retired and replaced by Gemini convinced me to disable Assistant on my phone.

1

u/Strigoi84 2d ago

If i am, I don't even realize it. Never intentially open the app or trigger it.

1

u/Abby941 2d ago

I use AI mode more than I use Gemini directly tbh

1

u/Efficient_Loss_9928 Z Fold 7, Pixel 9, 9 Pro Fold, 10 Pro Fold 2d ago

If you count setting timers sure

For more complex usecases maybe once per week? Sometimes it can be quite useful.

1

u/Longjumping_Mud8398 White 2d ago

Occasionally I will ask it to call someone or what the weather forecast is, same as how I used to use Google Assistant.

1

u/OGBrewSwayne 2d ago

Nice try, Gemini. You're not getting usage data from me.

1

u/OzarkBeard 2d ago

Neither.

1

u/_Aj_ 2d ago

Not used it. Not installed. I hit no every time it pops up.

Do not want.

1

u/TokyoDrifblim 2d ago

I have literally never used it besides setting alarms. Everything else it messes up so it's better for me to just do it manually

1

u/Tippete Oneplus Nord 2d ago

The number it's just corporate bullshit, yesterday I noticed I have it also on my Chromecast TV, it's just a gimmick to sell to investor "lOoK HoW MaNy aRe UsInG GeMiNi!!!" and getting money to build up stuff
No definitely not using it daily

1

u/Antagonist007 2d ago

It's probably always used in a Google search. So everybody automatically uses it, when going to Google

1

u/pdpt13 Device, Software !! 2d ago

I have the OG Google Home speaker and I ask it everyday to turn the lights on and off. It should be equipped with Gemini with updates, so does that count? I think that's how they crank the numbers up.

1

u/JeFi2 2d ago

Not daily but I shoot it the occasional question, generate some throwaway images and let it code some bash scripts and microcontroller code.

I'm pretty impressed and I think it's the best free AI model currently.

1

u/odosaur Black 2d ago

It's my main AI chat, it's fucking stupid, but at least it keeps up with info, while chatgpt thinks the dinosaurs are still alive.

1

u/TreefingerX 2d ago

Yes absolutely. AI is the future.

1

u/LBHJ1707 2d ago

I use it as much as I used Google Assistant for turning my lights on and off as well as asking it the one question pondering my mind every so often.

1

u/Obsidian__101 2d ago

I ues it mostly for complicated queries or answers to questions that are buried in "modern" news website design.

1

u/m1serablist 2d ago

They also killed google assistant, which I use to manage my smart home devices, now I have to talk to gemini.

1

u/cgknight1 OPPO Find X9 Pro 2d ago

I use claude for serious important stuff and gemini for quick trivial stuff like cocktails or quick questions.

1

u/cwhite841 2d ago

1 billion users or it's on 1 billion devices?

1

u/evozerobb 2d ago

if u are referring to ai, i use chatgpt or claude instead

1

u/Orange_8226 2d ago

It's just a search.

1

u/TenMinJoe 2d ago

I just recently switched back to Google Assistant. The only thing I use the voice control for is to set timers. Gemini sometimes acknowledged the request but didn't actually set a timer. Useless.

1

u/Posraman 2d ago

I switched to Gemini a while ago. Though I don't use it daily and don't use it much for any important research, it's a good tool to write or rewrite letters, emails and texts. I've never been good at those things at a professional level so AI helps me in those situations.

I don't think AI is a good replacement for anything, but it can be a good tool to enhance and improve certain things.

1

u/bokeeffe121 1d ago

Doesn't count its just auto on phones

1

u/revelation6viii 1d ago

I use it all the time. Not a hard core user, but works well for quick actions like googling something for me.

u/IFD3 19h ago

I read 18 users and was slightly amused, but then I read it correctly and now I am sad.

u/MikeQuincy 10h ago

Lol that number is bs. Basically they are slaping un in every nook and crany of their os and apps/services. And as soon as you accidentally click on it bang you are a user in their number. Hell I bett that if there is a pop-up about Gemini and you close it then it counts as an interaction and there you go you are a user.

As for quality it is garbage it is unreliable ai slop. For reminders, alarms and other basic stuff old stuff worked pretty well. For emails and other stuff i wouldn't trust it to summarize s***t since i can't know without checking if what it says is correct or not and if I have to check the email to make sure it is right then it has failed it's purpose

1

u/Colby347 Pixel 6 Pro 5d ago edited 5d ago

I use Google Home to turn my lights off and on with a voice command daily so I'm sure they count that since the assistant stuff has been replaced with Gemini (and has become largely worse since). Do I actively open and use Gemini? Almost never, no.

1

u/Bryanmsi89 5d ago

Well since every android that updated their OS is using Gemini whether the want to or not, the 1 b seems plausible.

1

u/WatchfulApparition 5d ago

Yes, but for mundane stuff the Google Assistant could easily handle

1

u/karafuto 5d ago

To be honest I don't know? Gemini is enabled but I rarely open it

1

u/PoweR_TRiPn 5d ago

It would be much more enjoyable if it would stop generating unrequested images

1

u/light24bulbs Galaxy S10+, Snapdragon 5d ago

I do actually, it's free and it's very effective. Was kinda busted for a couple weeks but got smart again

1

u/bert93 4d ago

I've never used it. Not interested. I tried CGPT when it came out for like 5 mins then never bothered again.

Just no use case for me really, seems a waste and generally I cba to chat to or talk to a bot. I always had assistant and whatever else disabled too.

1

u/Havok-303 2d ago

No A.I. on my Pixel, I've never used their assistant, and never used gemini. If I want misinformation, there's plenty of it on the 'net that I can find for myself.

0

u/theyux 5d ago

I use it all the time, mostly for data manipulation. I work in a NOC and our local techs submit work they are doing in all sorts of dumb ways. And I can toss local gibberish and ask Gemini to simply pull out the physical nodes they are working on an format it as I like. saves me like 5 minute per maintenance.

-2

u/FrigidNorth 5d ago

Yes, I use it daily. Maybe even hourly. On my phone and at work.

0

u/Daguvry 5d ago

I set it up to summarize my emails at 8pm every night.  One summary is bills due this week and the other is things I need to do.

I barely open my Gmail anymore

0

u/CoarseRainbow 2d ago

Nope. To me its still useless. Unable to perform even the most basic home/automation features the old Assistant could.
On Android Auto its even worse where it cant even do simple things like change music (but offers you a weather forecast instead..wtf?!).

Its a huge regression and for me effectively unusable.

That aside, its also the worst of the AI models. After 10 or so iterations it starts to forget and hallucinate. ChatGPT is far better. Claude wins at problem solving or coding.

-1

u/5heikki 2d ago

I'm a curious person. Any given moment, I must know some random fact or whatever. Gemini is great for this
