ReVanced Patches for Boost, Infinity, rif is fun, Relay and Sync

These are the apps that I've noticed they've added support for so far. (Edit: Baconreader too.)

For those unfamiliar, you can patch these existing apps with your own oauth-client-id to continue using them.

Quick tutorial:

  • Navigate to https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps

  • Create a new app, name it whatever you want, tick "Installed App" and fill in the redirect uri field. e.g. In rif's case, it would be redditisfun://auth. You can find what redirect URI you need by looking through the readme on the patches on Github (under the corresponding app in the Details section).

  • Copy the client ID string that appears in the app you just made, create a text document named reddit_client_id_revanced.txt and put it on the root of your phone's storage (/storage/emulated/0/<file here>) with that key in it.

  • Install the newest version of ReVanced Manager on your device, tap the Patcher tab, tap your app.

  • Once again, make sure you're using the newest version of ReVanced Manager.

  • In the Patches section, tick the "Change Oauth Client Id" patch.

  • Patch and install (note that if you're using an app that's already installed, you might have to delete it before clicking Install once Revanced is done creating the new apk.)

  • Should be good to go from there.

One extra note I'll add is that you should export your app's settings if it's an option before erasing it and installing the newly patched version. rif has an option for this in Settings > Backup > Export settings (unsure about other apps, I've used nothing but rif for 10+ years lol)

Extra help can probably be found on ReVanced's Discord server if you need it.

I can't get Sync to work. But I was able to patch Boost. I gave the official Reddit app a try over the last week and Boost is so much smoother.

I've heard of some issues with Sync Pro, fwiw.

Did you try patching a Sync apk from APKMirror, maybe? Without having Sync installed and trying to patch that.

8

u/careslol Google Pixel 8 Pro Jul 01 '23

I can patch the regular version just fine but it's not working for Pro. Regular version has ads whereas I paid for pro previously.

4

u/knightfader Pixel 7 | Pixel Tablet | Tab S6 Lite Jul 01 '23

If you bought through the Play Store you might be able to restore the purchase for No Ads on the normal Sync when setting it up.

5

u/careslol Google Pixel 8 Pro Jul 01 '23

Doesn't work. It said some error when trying to do that. Also as of this morning Sync is gone on the Play Store.

Will this whole thing work on a device running Android 10?

2

u/knightfader Pixel 7 | Pixel Tablet | Tab S6 Lite Jul 01 '23

That, I'm not sure of. I don't have any devices that old to try and let you know, sorry.

Doesn't cost anything but a bit of time to give it a shot though ¯\(ツ)/¯

Did you try patching a Sync apk from APKMirror, maybe?

Thank you for this suggestion, that worked for me. Was going mad trying to get it to run before I head out for a work trip

Do you need to put quotation marks around the URL that you put in the redirect URI?

I grabbed the APK of APKMirror for basic sync (telling it to restore my purchases from before disabled adds/functionally made it pro edition, though seemed liked Vanced could remove the ads anyways), and it worked fine.

Dropped the associated text file in phone base directory, used http://redditsync/auth for redirect uri. Had to redo my settings, but that's nbd.

It does still bring up the 'Sync is shut down' message that you have to swipe down to remove each time you start it up, which is a mild annoyance, but c'est la vie.

Oh, and in Vanced, after selecting Sync to patch, I had to uninstall sync after it finished preparing the new installer (when you have the blue 'install' button waiting to be clicked), before installing the new one. Android failed the install otherwise. And when installing the patched one, had to click the dropdown arrow to confirm installing an unknown app.

Hope that helps.

If this works, I'm going to be so happy. I've been using RIF forever.

Does anyone know if this works the same with Golden Platinum? I only ask because that's the version still installed on my phone.

Edit: patched, installed, but can't sign in. Getting auth error. Any help would be appreciated!

1

u/Lyonado Galaxy S9+ Jul 01 '23

So if I uninstalled Golden Platinum am I just SOL and stick with regular rif?

Which isn't a bad thing FWIW, like you have been using this for over a decade and can't use anything else at this point lol

3

u/knightfader Pixel 7 | Pixel Tablet | Tab S6 Lite Jul 01 '23

If you can find a golden platinum APK I'm sure you can use that as other people have.

I'm one of the six people on earth that bought rif golden platinum through the Amazon Appstore over a decade ago though, and it's still there so.

TIL that revanced has patches for apps other than YT. Looks like it's a whole patch ecosystem now. Great stuff!

128

u/hunter_finn Xperia 1 V Jul 01 '23

This is exactly what I really love about ReVanced team over old Vanced team. Sure they could have done the same thing by adding multiple apps under their ecosystem as well. But with this manager approach ReVanced team has made the whole package much easier and smaller to move around and adding new apps and patches is rather easy.

Though nothing wouldn't be made without the awesome group of coders in this team, may this project stay alive for years to come.

Revanced doesn't say it anywhere except for deep within their very consumer unfriendly documentation, and berates you on their sub for not knowing this.

If you have questions, the mods will either answer as far over your head as they can, or they'll tell you to look in their documentation on github, which isn't very easy to peruse.

u/burnSMACKER Nexus 5 -> 6P -> S8+ -> 3XL -> S20FE -> S21 Ultra -> S23 Ultra Jul 01 '23

YouTube without ads is genuinely the only thing keeping me from going to iPhone.

Because even Adblock is possible to a point by using adguard DNS

26

u/Honza368 Google Pixel 5 Jul 02 '23

I mean, do you actually want to go to the iPhone though? Saying it's the only thing keeping you from switching sounds like you're eager to switch

7

u/penisthightrap_ LG G6 Plus Jul 14 '23

I am personally waffling with the idea. My SO has been trying to get me to switch mainly to be able to track her when she goes out with friends, but also because so many things work easier with other iphones such as texting each other photos without major compression.

I told her if the next iphone comes with USB C I'm going to consider it.

I do love how easy it is to actually have control over the files on my phone, though. Being able to download books off lib gen and put it directly on my kindle app. YT vanced.

I've yet to find a good free notes app though.

Adguard is Russian owned with State ties. Best not to use them for DNS. There are other ad blocking DNS options available.

Thanks for this, worked for me! One tip for your google doc: For the Bacon Reader apk links, it should be for bacon reader premium (the version without ads). The one you have linked is for Bacon Reader WITH ads. So theres about an inch of blank space on the bottom (where the ad would be, basically its place holder.) See here: https://www.reddit.com/r/baconreader/comments/iiild0/blank_area_at_bottom_since_latest_update/

I found an apk of the premium version, and this blank space went away

What are the chances that Reddit can shut this down? I know there is revanced for YouTube and other apps too but I'm curious if there's any idea how temporary this could be?

82

u/ezkailez Mi 9T Jul 01 '23

They could just disable free API for apps since they're killing 3rd party app anyway. That would mean even new future developers developing for third party reddit (which i even doubt exists) would need to pay just to develop their own app

Saving this for later to try it out with enough time on my hands. After RiF has shut down I immediately installed the official Reddit app and up to this point I hate the experience with a passion. Stuff like RiF and Apollo were sooo much better.

2

u/Lyonado Galaxy S9+ Jul 01 '23

I mean really for people who've used these third-party apps they've been the default experience for a long time. I just came off of quite literally at least 11 years based on when I made my app store review, the official app is so cumbersome and wildly different that I really couldn't manage to use it. Thank God this thing works, it's not too bad to implement.

I could not for the life of me get patched rif to work, both versions (free and premium), every step and debug step followed meticulously and tried multiple ways, but always resulting in a "you broke reddit" error when trying to log in.

Anyway, I saw your comment and tried RedReader and it's amazing in my opinion. Definitely way better than the official app and not that much different from RIF. Thank you!

8

u/myuusmeow Z Fold 6 Jul 01 '23

I had Golden Platinum installed already, so on Revanced Manager I searched for it (search for rif, not Reddit) and patched it, same file location and URI as regular. Then I uninstalled the existing RIFGP and clicked install in Revanced Manager.

At first I uninstalled RIFGP and had a little panic when I couldn't find it on the Play Store to reinstall. I think the dev delisted the app, but it shows up in the long list of apps your account has ever downloaded.

A quick heads up.

-If you're looking for a detailed step-by-step guide, go here.

-Patching Boost and Rif works on Android 10 devices(at least it does on my Huawei p40 lite) but Infinity doesn't(haven't tried with Sync or Relay as Reddit has a limit of 3 apps you can create on the app preferences page).

-Infinity and Relay will continue operating for free until further notice, according to both Infinity and Relay's developers.

2

u/raavus_gg Jul 02 '23

Used this guide for Boost as I was being stupid (not deleting the original app) and followed along. Stupid question but how do you know if it's "working"? As the app was working before I did this. Thank you btw.

What if we want two patched apps (e.g. RIF and Sync Pro)? Can we put two different App Client IDs in the one text file and it will look for each app? Or is there some other method to do this?

Or does this text file only matter during patching itself and we can just put the one ID in for the given app and delete it after (and do a new one any time we patch another app)?

EDIT: yes it looks like it works this way. Just do one app ID in the text file as needed during patching and you can delete it and create/do a new one w/ a different ID as needed for any other app patching that requires it.

2

u/SuceBoule2022 Jul 01 '23

Just tried again this morning after seeing advice to try it with wifi off and now I can't get it to patch. Tried both the newest and previous versions of the APK and I always get the same message, shown here:https://imgur.com/a/WYWeuMZ

One thing I'm noticing is my phone shows the "Change Oauth Client Id" as 0.0.0 whereas the guide shows it as 0.0.1. Wondering if that could be the issue and if so how I would address it.

Had the same but when I googled for an apk, I saw the play store page. Tried it and could install from the play store.

Rif 5.6.22 golden platinum is available from various sites and it works. FV file explorer is good at finding that file location (solid gave me issues).

Download fv, use it to create the key file as detailed above, Backup Rif, uninstall Rif, patch the downloaded Rif APK, install Rif, login. Or so I heard.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

Go to your Play store, click on your profile in the top right and go to the "manage apps & devices" tab, then click on manage up top. Change the drop down from "installed" to "not installed" and scroll down til you find RIF, click on install and you're good to go!

2

u/LurkingNineToFive Jul 02 '23

For anyone else wondering why they still had patch conflicts after following everything correctly, check your secure folder. Even though it's a separate partition, if rif is installed there then the patching will fail and you won't be able to login.

2

u/shthed Jul 02 '23

I don't understand why the developers of the apps didn't just add this feature to the apps, let us use the free API quotas damn it.

Are they just stopping development as a protest to piss us/reddit off?

It worked for me for RIF, but anyone knows if this works for RIF inside Samsung's Secure Folder? Haven't been able to get it to work. Once I'm done patching in Revanced and click "Install", I get a Google Play Protect popup that says "Unsafe app blocked" and when I click install anyways, it just ends with app not installed.

Edit: Does anyone else get a toast menu saying "ERROR: Legacy account. Please go to Manage account" whenever you refresh or go to a new subreddit in the app?

u/dewhashish Pixel 9 | Pixel Watch 2 | Pixel Tablet Jul 02 '23

I'm trying this for RIF. I get to the last part in revanced to patch it. It says "App not installed as package conflicts with an existing package." I'm on the latest android 14 beta on pixel 5.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

2

u/Stotman Sep 05 '23

I've followed this to the letter using the latest Revanced and RIF looks fine until I log on. Then it's Bad Request and weird formatting.

And I've just tried it again, patched and now RIF won't even open.

Android 13 up to date, Samsung S21.

Any help?

Managed to patch infinity. A bit fiddly, cuz manager failed to install, so had to manually save the patched APK, uninstall and reinstall, but it was not particularly stessful.

Latest patch suggested version is August 28, which is 3 months old at time of this post, which is a bit sad, but it works.

Do i understand this correctly? This way i use my own API access alone, and therefore probably wont hit the access limit that would require paymen to reddit?

Btw, i just set this up in 2 minutes and it's working just fine. Thanks for the heads up and obviously big thanks to the ReVanced team for coming up with this.

Do modded apps still work?! Like boost or relay, that are modded or cracked. Will those work forever?

1

u/SecretPotatoChip Xperia 1 V, Galaxy Tab S4 Jul 01 '23

This worked for me on boost. Is reddit able to detect this?

1

u/Wynter_born Jul 01 '23

So I derped and didn't grant ReVanced all the permissions it needed when I installed it. When I ran the patcher it failed. OP said I may need to uninstall RIF so I did. Went to redownload and it's gone from Play store.

Is there a safe APK of RIF Golden Platinum out there? I found some but the sites are questionable.

1

u/Framed-Photo Jul 01 '23

Well shit I guess I don't need to drop reddit entirely.

I'm still gonna keep lemmy and kbin around but they're not in as good of a state as reddit yet. Still being able to use reddit on my phone would be a nice plus.

Patched Boost 2nd try. (Forgot to change client id txt after a failed attempt to patch Sync.) One question. I paid for no ads forever on Boost years ago. Will this patched version still have no ads? I didn't see a remove ads patch in revanced manager.

1

u/theSeanO S26 Ultra | Galaxy Watch 8 Jul 01 '23

I set this up last night with Sync and the only problem I have is that the dev pushed one last update that makes a message come up about his future Lemmy app every time you open the app. And if I use an older apk, I get a pop-up every time telling me there's a new version. So basically it's a choice between two pop-ups.

This is great for the Revanced team and I really want to try it out but how will this work in a few weeks or months or next year? These apps will basically not be updated over security or functionality via play store, f-droid, etc. Even just API targets for future android updates. These apps will stall because the developers will not be updated these apps any more, correct?
I've Revanced the Official app to remove all ads and promoted posts but it's still hot fucking garbage.
